The use of a wide range of chemicals to destroy pests and weeds is
an important aspect of agricultural practice in Ghana. However the
associated adverse effects on environmental quality and human
health give rise to concerns at local, regional and national scales.
This study reviews current knowledge on pesticides use in vegetable
farming in Ghana and establishes the fate and impact of these
pesticides in situ in tropical
vegeta
Ые-
based agroecosystems. A field
survey showed that vegetable farmers often spray pesticides on a
prophylactic basis due due to lack of information; adequate
protection to minimize risks is hardly taken. About
70%
of the
exposed farmers had a reduction of
30%
or more in whole blood
acetylcholinesterase activity and about
95%
of the farmers
interviewed reported symptoms attributable to pesticide exposure.
Pesticide residue levels detected in five vegetable crop types
(tomato, cabbage, pepper, onion and eggplant) were correlated with
the minimal risk levels (MRLs) set by the United States Agency for
Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). Although mean
intakes by adults did not seem to be associated with health risks, the
levels of DDT, dieldrin, HCB and HCHs in farmers breast milk and
blood serum raise concern with respect to the health of children.
Evidence was found for persistence of ¡somers of endosulfan and
the sulphate metabolite in tomato-cropped soil and plant tissues.
However the residue concentration in tomato fruits were shown
to decrease to a level below the CODEX MRLs, given a two-week
pre-harvest interval during which no pesticides are applied. It is
concluded that succesful actions to reduce the negative impact of
pesticides require sustained, low-cost and well-targeted training
interventions.
