There are over three hundred species of parrots, with more than one hundred recognised as
rare, endangered, vulnerable or threatened with extinction. Parrots of Africa, Madagascar
and the
Mascarme
Islands: Biology, Ecology and Conservation covers current knowledge on
all aspects of the biology of extant African, Malagasy and Mascarene parrots. Themes such
as the behavioural and ecological characteristics of parrots, their species characteristics and
conservation biology are developed in the book, which also reviews our knowledge of extinct
and fossil parrots from the region.
Parrots are largely distributed in the tropical developing world, where there is great dependence
on the exploitation of natural resources, particularly hard wood evergreen forests. This book
examines how research, education and conservation actions are greatly reducing illegal trade
in African parrots, although the practice is still of great concern.
Parrots of Africa, Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands is extremely well-illustrated,
with very high quality original photographs, and will appeal to ornithologists, conservation
biologists,
avian ecologists,
academics, erudite bird watchers and the informed public. It also
includes distribution maps, figures and tables.
Mike Perrin is Professor Emeritus of Zoology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and has
been Director of the Research Centre for African Parrot Conservation for a decade. He
participated in the World Parrot Summit and contributed to the Parrot Action Plan
(2000). |
