STRUCTURAL CHANGES
AND
ECONOMIC
GROWTH
IN THE EUROPEAN UNION COUNTRIES
Summary
The book studies theoretical and empirical aspects of the role of different
economic sectors and manufacturing industries in the
EU
countries for economic
growth. It makes a comparative study of the structural changes in the
EU
countries,
particularly those in Central and Eastern Europe, in order to outline the trends and
their connection to the economic growth. Special attention is drawn to the potential,
as well as the problems for achieving higher economic growth in Bulgaria as an
EU
member.
The studied issues are constructed in three chapters. The first chapter discusses
the theoretical background of the observed global structural changes, particularly
in the developed countries regarding the leading role of the service sectors and
the realized economic growth. Based on an empirical analysis of the structural
changes in the
EU
countries for the last ten years before the financial and economic
crisis
2008-2009,
the chapter proves the main change in the branch structure of the
EU-27 countries' economies and the strong increase of the service sector's role,
particularly the financial and information and communication services, as well
as the technological sector. The second chapter discusses mainly the empirical
studies of the world renown
Groningen
Growth and Development Centre in the
Netherlands on the intra-branch changes and labour productivity. The third chapter
discusses the reflection of the global financial and economic crisis in
2008-2009
on
the sectoral changes and their connection with the economic growth.
The carried out empirical studies suggest a database and main tendencies and
conclusion are outlined concerning the potential and the problems of the economic
restructuring for a higher economic growth in the
EU
countries at the current
difficult stage of economic development of the Community. The studies give also
implications on the nature and concrete structural policy the
EU
countries should
implement, including the less developed countries like Bulgaria, for achieving
steady economic growth and improving their economies' competitiveness.
