The fortress of
Komárom
is located at one of the most important
strategic points of the Carpathian basin and the entire Central European
region as well. Due to this fact it was a decisive basic element of the frontier
system built to provide defence against the Turkish conquest in the
16-
17th
centuries, and later from the Napoleonic wars, turned into an enormous central
depot-fortress of the Austrian Empire.
This book is meant to represent the history of the fortress at a time
when the political and military leaders of the
Habsburg
Empire, after run
of defeats on the battleground, decided to rethink and revise the military
security of their Empire. Colonel Mayer
von
Heldensfeld created his concept
in
1807
in which
Komárom
was meant to function on one hand as a depot-
base with central position, and on the other as a camp-fortress and as a
double-beachhead at the same time. The suggestion was accepted by Emperor
Franz I, and following his decision the expansion and rebuilding of the castle
started in the following year.
The building procedures of great impetus were further pressed by the
war of
1809,
and after the battle of Aspern the surroundings of
Komárom
became a part of the theatre of operations. The expediency of the fortress,
being built in the meantime, could be first proven by the events following the
battle of
Raab
on 14th July
1809,
since the Austrian and Hungarian troops
defeated there were able to cross the Danube and regroup in the shields of the
fortress of
Komárom.
The French did not even make an attempt to attack the
fortresses.
The armistice signed by Archduke Charles after the defeat of the
Imperial Army at Wagram was not accepted by the Emperor who wished
to reorganize his army with
Komárom
as a centre and proceed with the
war. The Imperial Court moved to the fortress, so it became the Empire's
administrative centre for weeks. Meanwhile the construction works at the
fortress continued; between each point of the fortress palisades were emerged,
as well as the surroundings of the fortress were fitted with defence lines. These
works continued until the peace treaty.
Fort
Komárom
proved in
1809
that the decision to expand it was right,
and experience shows that it was considered as one of the premier fortresses of
the Austrian Empire in the following seventy years. |
