The edition of the correspondence ofT. G.
Masaryk
and
Edvard Beneš
between
1918-1937
is a continuation of the first volume of their correspondence during the
First World War. At the same time it is another volume in the Correspondence of
T. G.
Masaryk
series. It has the same structure as the previous volumes, as well as the
same editorial style. The book contains an introduction, editorial note, index of names,
illustrations, English summary and list of correspondence.
The bulk of the edition consists of
324
documents, primarily letters and telegrams
from Czech and foreign archives. The originally known number of
190
items was
expanded to
134
items. Other previous editions of the correspondence were used as
well, however, none cover the time period of this volume systematically.
Unlike the first volume of their correspondence during the war years, which pri¬
marily presents the extent of the personal collaboration between the two men through
their correspondence, there was a significant amount of official documents produced
after the war, due to T. G.
Masaryk
and
Edvard
Beneš s
part in the running of the in¬
stitutions that they headed. Their involvement in the creation of Czechoslovak foreign
policy and the establishment of the foreign service was extraordinary. Many foreign
policy problems, but also many of the internal political problems of the Czechoslovak
state, were reflected in the multitude of telegrams that no longer have the character
of a purely personal correspondence.
Masaryk
and
Beneš
did not communicate any
longer as private individuals, but as the President of the Republic with the Minister
of Foreign Affairs with all of the prerequisites that such a communication demanded
(following official procedures and official formality, the telegrams were generally
encrypted, the messages were sometimes delivered by other people, etc.). The fre¬
quency of the telegrams was enormous especially in the early years of the republic, for
example during the Paris peace conference, when it was necessary to submit reports
and instructions immediately. During this time the boundaries between personal
and official correspondence disappeared and it is difficult to define exactly the dif¬
ference between personal and official messages in official and diplomatic reports in
the subsequent period.

The Story of Collaboration and Friendship
explains the relationship of the two protagonists and is based on an analysis of their
mutual correspondence. This correspondence significantly attests to their personal rela¬
tionship, but also to the political, cultural and economic life of interwar Czechoslovakia
and the position of these two politicians in it. Special attention is paid to the personal
part that
Masaryk
and
Beneš
had in the establishment of institutions and institutes
that they led, their mutual cooperation, involvement in personnel policy, establishment

of a center of power and new political elites. The study also focuses on the position of
both politicians in society and further describes the ways in which they exerted their
influence on the media. Also mentioned is the influence of T. G.
Masaryk
and
Edvard
Beneš s
families on politics and their involvement in public life.
