of scholarship on overt and underground

resistance that has emerged in the years since
World War II, the myth of Jewish passivity in the
Holocaust persists in our society. To acclaimed
Holocaust scholar
ÏNTechama
Tec,
this repeated
question irnplied an assumption that Jews were
somehow complicit in their own extermination.
In Resistance, Tec sets out to address this
fallacy, drawing on first-hand accounts and in¬
terviews writh survivors to reveal the full range
of tactics employed to resist the
ÎSTazi
regime in
Poland. The result is a work: that considers both
Jewish and non-Jewish individuals in a wide
range of circumstances, and establishes that the
Jewish resistance had its own particular aims,
especially the recovery of dignity and the salva¬
tion of lives

ious settings, including ghettos, concentration
camps, forests, and the outside "Aryan" wOrld.
She also explores the conditions necessary for re¬
sistance, including favorable topography, a sup¬
ply of arms, and effective leadership, but dedi¬
cates the majority of the book to the stories of
those who stood up and fought

explores life in the ghettoes and concentration
camps, describing the organizations that arose
within them and uprisings such as that in the
Warsaw ghetto that began on January
18, 1943.
It tells of those who escaped to hide and fight as
partisans in the forests, and considers the cru¬
cial role played by women who acted as
courir

carrying messages and supplies between the
ghetto and the outside world.
Imbued with Nechama Tec's years of schol¬
arship and her personal insight into the lives of
Holocaust survivors, Resistance is a rich book
that forever shatters the myth of Jewish passivity
in the face of annihilation. |
