the Stories about the Past and the Space
The book concerns the collective and cultural memory of the Lemko community,
a small ethnic group living in Poland and Ukraine (considered also as an ethno¬
graphic group of Ukrainian nation or as the members of Rusyn nation, living in the
Carpathian Mountains region). Most of them live scattered in western Poland and
western Ukraine as a result of deportations which the group experienced at the end
of the Second World War and due to the postwar circumstances in the communist
Poland
(1944-1947).
Considering the fact that the position of the Lemkos in Poland is the position of
ethnic minority, it is worth noting that in Ukraine the Lemkos are treated as an et-
nographic group of the Ukrainian Carpathian
mountainers.
Some of the researchers
insist on the theory that the Lemkos are the most westerly situated part of the Ukra¬
inian nation, speaking an Ukrainian dialect. For others the Lemkos are just the Lem¬
kos, a regional ethnic group, nothing more, nothing less. For others, however, the
Lemkos are a part of the Rusyn nation (living in Poland, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania,
the USA, Canada). Among the Lemkos, there are two main national identity options:
Ukrainian and Rusyn, and two regional ones
-
Polish or Ukrainian. The Lemkos in
Poland after
1989
and in Ukraine after
1991,
began the intensive commemorative
practices: they meet one another at festivals, visit family villages, erect memorials,
write diaries. Mostly they use the general name of the region
-
Carpathian Moun¬
tains
-
instead of the name of the village or Lower
Beskid
(these are the Lemkos
diaries and in-depth-interviews that show it).
Many of them
-
especially those, who were resettled in Poland
-
returned to their
abandoned places in the Carpathian Mountains but the majority stayed far away
from this territory. It is not obvious that they try to visit the place as often as possible.
Sometimes they have little opportunities to visit it. What is more, it is not rare that
they have not been able to come to Poland for over sixty years, especially when living
in Ukraine. In this book I concentrate on the experience of the people who have not
returned to Lemkovyna (the Lemko land). Staying far away from their ethnic territory,
the Lemkos have developed many important strategies of remembering the past and
the place where they were born. Nevertheless, in many cases Lemkovyna exists only
as an idea.
I am focused on the most recent past of the Lemko people, and thus such past,
which is still remembered by the eldest members of their group, the past, which they
were the witnesses to or taken their part in. It is closely linked to the question of cultu¬
ral self-presentation of the Lemko community in the area of how this particular group
communicates its memories, creating the material representation, and interpretative
pictures of thereof. I am interested in how the Lemkos remember their collective past
and how does it help them, as a group, to survive.
The members of the group are unusually focused on the past and still build their
identity on this historic reversal. Their collective memory is filled with the references
to the end of WW2 and post-war period which re-defined the meaning of being the

consider
their commemoration efforts as peculiar cultural practice which
demands deep anthropological analysis.
Cultural anthropology discovered the question of complexity of collective memo¬
ry in cognition long time ago, but still the anthropologists seek for more appropriate
methodological solutions. In Poland they often benefit from the results of sociological
studies, but they are more concentrated on the impact which the researcher has on
the narration of the past.
I explored the discourses of the Lemkos traumatic past shown in written and oral
narrations which I had gathered in Poland and Ukraine. I examined three dimensions
of memory of the Lemkos in the meaning of Jan and Aleida Assmann s
-
communica¬
tive, collective and cultural memory. My investigation was guided by the following
questions: what the Lemkos remember and how they tell their stories about the past;
how memories are negotiated by means of discourse strategies in the memory com¬
munities; what general differences can be observed in the manner in which the Lem¬
kos have built up their written and oral
discources
of the memory of the past; how the
second and further generation of the deportees use the experiences of the ancestors in
their postmemory practices.
Basing on

diaries published in Poland and Ukraine, using biographical
method, I have reconstructed the Lemko memories which are cultivated and ne¬
gotiated. I chose to compare them with the memories concerning only one place in
Lemkovyna, the village of
Komańcza.
I examined the Lemko diaries and memorial
relations as a cultural practice set in the context of certain, characteristic to the Lemko
community, actions which have the continuation of their own cultural identity in
mind. The diaries are usually written by the people who have no professional link
to literature. The Lemkos diaries have been first published in Poland and Ukraine in
the
90s
of the 20th century.
The number of witnesses to the tragic events is dwindling, but those who remem¬
ber them from their parents and grandparents tales reach for the pen themselves.
The returns to the realm marked with this past presence appear often on the pages of
the diaries and collection of memoirs. In case of the Lemko authors, it is a mythical
region in the Lower
Beskid
mountains. The Lemkos written narratives are the most
widespread cultural practice used by them to reconstruct, share and communicate
collective memories. The authors make use of collective experiences and the perspec¬
tive of the average Lemko in their texts which are constructed on the basis of every¬
day life experiences. The reader perceives those heroes and places to be witnesses to
history and also objects of identification.
The comparative materials were: the transcripts of

interviews, carried out
in Poland and Ukraine with the current and former residents of the village of
Ko¬
mańcza.
Moreover, the project also aimed at shedding light on the current practices
of commemoration and remembrance related to the
1944-1947
deportations and their
consequences which the practices have had on the Lemkos who live in Poland and
Ukraine. Lastly, I deliberated general differences that can be observed in the manner
in which the Lemkos in Poland and in Ukraine have built up their written and oral
discources
of the memory of the past.
I wanted to investigate how the Lemkos deal with the past, collectively understand
and construct the past, and how it is reflected in their narratives but also during pub¬
lic practices of remembrance at commemoration ceremonies held at special places
-
sites of memory in Lemkovyna or in Ukraine. These are official days of remembrance
which are very important to the Lemko collective memory. All those practices show
many different ways in which the Lemkos , culture is based on the construction, ma-

nipulation and transmission of memories and the role played by memory in collec¬
tive and individual identity formation. References to the past reassure the members
of the group of their collective identity and supply them with the awareness of their
unity and singularity in time and space by creating a shared past.
Another question was the admiration of the Lemkovyna space. Space is one of
the most important conceptual frames around which people organize their reality
and activity. Not only is the space (and the way it is reflected in a language) in the
Lemkos culture axiologically and emotionally marked, but it has also been sacrali-
zed and included into a value system of their identity. Cultural meaning of the Car¬
pathian Mountains determined life choices and decisions of hundreds of people. It
also impacts their personal attitude to the ethnic past. The lack of the mountainous
landscape leads to a feeling of emotional homelessness.
I define the Lemkos collective memory as a manner of telling the past. In this
context there are many strategies which are undertaken and which I define as a self-
-presentation. It has two dimensions: ethnic, reserved for the culture bearers and for
the members of the Lemko symbolic universe, and wider, supra-ethnic one, which is
intended for the Poles (for the Lemkos who publish in Poland) and the Ukrainians
(for those Lemkos who publish in Ukraine). The collective memory and the ways it
is manifested show not only the attitudes and emotions towards the past events, but
also the views of the future of the group and its opinions of an actual group condition.
Basing on written and oral sources the memory work (memory of the witness of
events, the memory of the next generations
-
postmemory) and dominating contents
of communicative, collective and cultural memory (by J. and A. Assmann) of the
Lemkos have been investigated, including their strategies of self-presentation. The
results of ethnographical field research and the analysis of documentary literature
shown the variety of memory discourse strategies which often leads to conflicts and
which the Lemkos apply in their discussions of contemporary ethnic identity.
Moreover, I discussed the question of the impact of anthropologist who tries to
investigate the traumatic past of the ethnic group which suffered from the nation
which the researcher represents. The comparison of two modes of narration (written
and oral, formed without the participation or through the researcher) led to the con¬
clusions of a heterogeneous nature of collective memory

the Lemkos.
Among the Lemkos there exists several memory communities which operate di-
versed strategies of talking about the past. The Lemkos collective memory, which
has been discussed and politically manipulated (identity division: Lemko-Ukrainians
vs. Carpatho-Rusyns), can be regarded in many variations; they do not claim the
same vision of the past and present. These opposition resulted in rupture of the cul¬
tural memory within the group, so today they should be seen as competitive commu¬
nities of memory, which are connected only by the ethnonym, cultural heritage and
events once lived.

rature (narration, documentary literature) and anthropology of ethnicity. Her ethno¬
graphical field research in Poland and Ukraine focuses on cultural self-presentation
of minorities, folklorism, cultural expressions, regionalism and constructions of re¬
gions images. She published several articles on the question of collective memory
and self-presentation strategies of the Lemkos, the mythologization of space, folklo¬
rism.
