| adam_text | Abstract
Our work researched and analysed the relations between
Hellenism and Romanity in a province that played a decisive role in
defining the oriental Romanity. The analysed literary sources refer to
the concepts of Hellenism and Romanity, while the epigraphic sources
to
onomastice
and the glottal domain, underlining the ethnical implications.
From a methodological point of view, we used an
integrative
approach and vision regarding the issues of relations between
Hellenism and Romanity in the entire province of Moesia Inferior,
applying an analytical and interpretative unified pattern. Considering
the topic of the thesis, the structure unfolded as follows:
In the Introduction we presented a short history of linguistic
and
onomastic
research, which proved to be of great value to our study.
fn the first chapter we insisted upon two concepts
-
Hellenism and
Romanity
-,
starting from Antiquity to the modern exegesis, from the
Point of view of historical semantics. As the
onomastic
information
from inscriptions represents, for the analysed period, an ethnical
indicator with approximate value, the second chapter studied the
onomastic
realities from this province. Our investigations covered the
following aspects:
1.
Identifying the mixed Greek-Latin
onomastic
Patterns as potential ethnical indicators;
2.
Evidencing the degree of
Gfeek and Roman
onomastice
presence within the Thracian
autochthonous population. In the third and fourth chapters, regarding
the language of Greek and Latin inscriptions, we followed an analytical
P^ern, in accordance with recent approaches to the study of language
^criptions features; after the necessasy methodological and
terminological specifications, we organized the research at the

phonological (vocalic and consonant) and
flexional
(morphological and
syntactic) levels. The last chapter, entitled
„Bümgualism
and glottal
interferences , legitimates its title through the fact that interferences
phenomena cannot appear outside the bilingualism sphere. Even though
it represents an extremely low percentage, the bilingual inscriptions
deserve special attention. Greek-Latin and Latin-Greek equivalencies of
certain political, administrative and religious terms, the Code-Switching
and stereotypical formulas are the main aspects analysed in the thesis.
The
onomastice
of bilingual inscriptions could also point to the
existence of trilingualism, a potential phenomenon, especially in mixed
families, with Thracian background, living in a Greek-Latin bilingual
environment. We are aware of the limitations of such a hypothesis,
based strictly on the
onomastic
criterion. Concerning the linguistic
interferences, the analysis was made on different levels, such as the
flexional,
the lexical and the formulation one. Obviously, most
conclusive interferences were observed at the lexical level, due to the
presence of Greek terms in Latin inscriptions and, conversely, the
presence of Latin terms in Greek inscriptions.
The main conclusions can be summarized as follows:
1.
The
mixed Greek-Latin
onomastic
formulas appeared concurrently with the
Roman control over the hellenophone areas, with the practice evolving
into an
onomastic
habitude;
2.
The presence of pure Latin and Greek
onomastics in the Greek and Latin inscriptions from Moesia Inferior
does not necessarily point to an ethnical indicator, while the language
in which the epigraphs were written is a clear argument supporting the
affiliation to a hellenophone or Latinophone community;
3.
The
specificities displayed by the Greek and Latin found in the inscriptions
from Moesia Inferior reflect the unified character of each of them, with
a strong pan-Hellenic and pan-Latin character;
4.
The Greek-Roman
bilingualism is illustrated through a scarce number of bilingual
inscriptions, which are nonetheless extremely suggestive in mapping
the real situation;
5.
From a spatial point of view, the Greek-Latin and
Latin-Greek
onomastic
and linguistic interference phenomenon
manifested with the greatest intensity in the West-Pontic coastal area;

In the
Danubian
and Balkan space, Latin language easily imposed itself
on the autochthonous population, being used in the urban and rural
organisational structures, while within the Greek poleis milieu, Latin,
as state language, expanded and spread mostly in the form of Greek-
Latin bilingualism;

Researching the relations between Hellenism and
Romanity, the birth and spread of Latin language in Moesia Inferior,
including bilingualism, greatly contributes to a more adequate
understanding of the configuration and persistency of the oriental
Romanity
-
in its entirety, a complex phenomenon that structurally
modified the historical evolution of the Carpathian-Balkan space.
