Reformed Diocese
and its Parochial Communities
Today only three larger Reformed communities or parishes from the former
Gyulafehérvár
Diocese (later
Károlyfehérvár
Diocese) are considered viable:
Vajasd, Gyulafehérvár
and
partially,
Tövis.
It is not merely the folly of history that after the Reformation, our once
wealthy communities lost their Hungarian population, wealth, churches, local identity and
after that, their regional identity as well. It could be stated: the
Gyulafehérvár
Reformed
Diocese was the one region where the frightening formula of ethnic assimilation, emigration
and superannuation remained, unfortunately, not only at theoretical level, but also at
the expense of the Hungarian communities, and it was sometimes accompanied by self-
destructive passivity.
The disappearance of our Hungarian communities could be described by the classical
statement, where the school bell ceased, there later the bell faded. No-longer-existing
communities, collapsed churches and a long line of parishes fallen on their knees recount
this sad, dismal process.
Along with the people, the church sites have become the victims of neglect as well. The
publication of the document called
Inquisitoria
Dioceseos Alba-Carolinensis Reformatae
Relatoria
(1
7S4), although forgotten today, attempts to present the background of church
management which has assumed a prominent role in many instances of the history of
Hungarian politics, religion and culture since the Middle Ages, throughout the Reformation,
and into the 19th century. Moreover, it served the factual livelihood and survival of the
Reformed communities from the
Hegyalja
region. It is about supplying a deficiency, which
was also made necessary by the fact that in
Jenő Zoványis
Church-history Encyclopedia, the
article about the
Gyulafehérvár
Diocese describes the history of the diocese as an extremely
lacunary history. In fact, it is about the history of diasporization, todays faintly chiming
Atlantis.
From the administrative point of view, the
Gyulafehérvár
Diocese was part of the former
Fehér,
later
Alsó-Fehér
County. It comprised some Hungarian parishes from today s
Szeben
(Sibiu)
county also. The biggest towns of the former county, besides the seat of
Gyulafehérvár
(Alba Iulia), were
Abrudbánya-Korna
(Abrud),
Vízakna
(Ocna Sibiului) and
Nagyenyed (Aiud).
From the church administration point of view, the two latter towns were
part of other Reformed dioceses. From the church point of view, some of the communities
listed in our Relatoria do not exist anymore as parishes; there are no buildings, no believers
and no wealth; only the past can be referred to. The earliest census affecting the diocesan
communities dates from
1658,
following the Tartar invasion. It was published in
1663.
From this we learn, the Reformed Diocese of
Gyulafehérvár
was made up of
17
mother-
churches and
20
curacies. Our Rehtoria mentions only
16
Reformed parishes. Slightly later,
in
1766,
there are about
17
Reformed communities, to which
3670
persons belonged. In
483
1858,
after the
1848-1849
revolution and war of independence, the number of Reformed
mother-churches fell to
9,
not accidentally, for
Hegyalja
was one of the main stages of the
Hungarian-Romanian civil war. After the revolution, only
3046
Hungarians lived in the
Reformed communities and in their

curacies.
The region was equally ravaged by the Turks, the Tartars
(1658,1662),
the Horea-uprising
(1784)
and the civil war which broke out in the autumn of
1848,
and as the final chord, the
two big wars of the 20th century. The violence of Communism quickened the decomposing
process of the Hungarian communities. Hence, it is not accidental that the Diocese, which
became nonviable by the mid 20th century, after another administrative division, became
part of the Hunyad Diocese in
1950,
then part of the
Hunyad-Gyulafehérvár
Diocese in
1968,
and after
1990
was incorporated in the reorganized Nagyenyed Diocese. Only in
three communities of the former
Gyulafehérvár
Diocese can we speak about Hungarian
religious life:
Gyulafehérvár
(Alba Iulia), Vajasd (Oiejdea) and partly,
Tövis
(Teiuş).
Only
1400
Reformed live in these communities today, although, due to economic-historical and
missionary reasons, there are communities with curates in other parishes too. Today the
Reformed Hungarian life can be found in traces only.
Thus, this is supplimented by the Relatoria, which relates the economic life of the diocese
in the 18th century. Although these church urbaria-wealth
censa,
due to the dry, economic-
historical character of the data, do not represent an absolute priority for the publication of
the source, they inform us of Transylvania s early modern and modern day religious and
secular society. We can find the cause for the numerous wealth
censa
in the long-lasting
effort of the wealth management of the Church throughout the centuries, which had been
commanded by the income conservation (saving) caused by justifications, challenges, wars,
crisis caused by demographic decline, revolutions, peasant uprisings, wealth confiscation,
natural catastrophies, tax-caused anxiety, fear and responsibility. Our Relatoria, as a wealth
census, wished to draw up distinguished categories among those of priestly status, as a one-
man nobility and personal wealth on one hand, and the religious community s possessions
on the other. This, however, was done not by the Church but by the State, using its taxation
policy. The wealth and census data legitimized the Church s income. The task of guarding
the movable and immovable properties of the Church belonged not only to the church,
which thus proved its nobility, but became the task of the State. Thus, the oversight of the
church s wealth and property was undertaken jointly by the church and government. Our
Relatoria was born in this complex context. It was part of the
Habsburg
tax reform and
policy, which evolved along with the Principality s economic integration. The wealth data,
which had been compiled in the form of questions and answers, eventually gave an overview
of the religious society, buildings, lands, wealth and debt of the settlements which were
visited. The Transylvanian census was begun in
1750.
Those charged with collecting the
information for the Relatoria s were:
Miklós Cégei
Wass, granger and
László Szalontai Tóth,
secular curators of the
Gyulafehérvár
Reformed Diocese,
István Bányai,
the dean of the
diocese, reverend of
Borosbenedek
market-town. These curators of the census undertook
the command for the hearing of witnesses which was endorsed by the royal and Transylvanian
(governatorial) seals. The document was issued on
25
January,
1754
in
Nagyszeben.
The

work was eventually carried out by
István
Danczkai, churchwarden of
Magyarigen
(Ighiu).
In
1754,
Péter
Bod brought to our knowledge the fact that the census was begun three years
prior to his appointment, at the request of dean Danczkai. From the Reformed point of
view, he was the most appropriate person to carry out the ius relatoria from
Hegyalja.
The value of the Relatoria lies in the fact that it documents the religious communities
which today are in ruins or are totally nonexistent. From the listed settlements there are
only five locally accomodated pastors. It is a historical and economic testament of a former
Diocese, of an already collapsed religious society. The Relatoria follows the

parishes step
by step, and it publishes important economic data about their lives in
1754.
Our publication
of the document and our descriptions of community history document a world now
unknown. They attempt to restore buildings which had been erected a long time ago, and
which today are monuments, forgotten vineyard names, lost communities and the history,
wealth and demography of churches. It is supplementary, one of the last testaments of an
undeservedly forgotten world. However, we should not be disappointed by their wail and
cry, but be energized by their superhuman, faith-imbued fight, which has always acted for
a valuable, more promising and liveable Reformed life in the
Hegyalja.
We may also collect
strength from it for our everyday struggle...
