Summary
Faith, Culture and Society
Religious Cultures in 19th and 20th Century Czech Lands
The collective publication Faith, Culture and Society is one of the deliverables of
the international research project aimed at surveying religious cultures in
19th and 20th century Europe. From the perspective of the general processes of
modernisation and
démocratisation
of society, of the pluralisation of religion
and of the common relationship of society and religion, every case study shows,
using historical and social material of (chiefly) Czech history, the socio-cultural
effects of religion and the changes in its functions.
The book is divided into four chapters, in which the group of authors develop
the given theme from several basic perspectives. One perspective is that of creating
various religious spaces and fields, differing socially, historically, ethnically and
culturally, and where these factors define each other, rival with each other
and propagate individual religions and confessions, creating a specific religious
everydayness. The second thematic whole is dedicated to exploring forms of
religious culture from the perspective of its functions in the process of socnd
integration, of creating national and personal identities and of showing
politicai
loyalties. The third part, concentrating on changes in the concept of death and
in burial methods, shows how these changes in religjous cults and rites are related
to the modernisation of society and also to its nationalisation. Finally, the fourth
part is dedicated to culture in the narrow sense of the word, especially to literature
and to music, where several apologetic and aesthetic aspects interact, where
cultural differences are realised and, sometimes, where changes in religious identity
come to pass.
. , - . .
The uniting element of the entire publication remains, however, the definition
of the analytical potential of the concepts of religious cultures, which should,
with its wide scope, show a uniting factor in all of the case studies and explain its
terminology and its thematic orientation. This section is covered
ш
the introduction
by the editor and the director of the Czech partners in the project,
Milos
Havelka.
Havelb pays attention to the differences in understanding religion as a taxonomicaUy

Summary
defined social phenomenon and as an open social relationship. He defines the
methodological differences of religious fields and religious spaces, as well as the
effects these differences have on the processes of secularisation and pluralisation
of religion; thus, he also shows the different forms of the impact that religion
has on society and of the impact of society on religion. He characterises culture
as the "other-beingness" of religion, and characterises religious culture as the
synergy of three dimensions: that what people of a certain society in a certain
period truly know about religion, what they think about it, and how they judge it.
It is only when we consider all three of these components that we can grasp the
specific manifests and effects of religious culture.
The first chapter of the book, Spaces and Fields, is opened by the study ^Associations
of Catholic Journeymen in Late
1
9th Century Bohemia. In this study, Adam
Dobeš
deals with the local-historical aspects of the politicisation of public life in Bohemia
using the example of Catholic institutions of craftsmen, known as societies
of Catholic journeymen. The theme is enhanced by the often ignored issue of
nationalisation, e. g. on the example of the spread of nationality conflicts into
ethnically mixed associations of Catholic journeymen in Bohemia in the mid
1
890's.
The study thus shows the contemporary anti-Catholic socio-political sentiments
on the background of an appropriate dimension of space.
Next, Peter
C. A. Morée
presents in the study Attitudes of German Speaking
Evangelists towards Nationalism in Chechoslovakia in
1918—1946
the perspective of
the German Evangelical Church in Bohemia, in Moravia and in Silesia. He does
so by presenting three stories
—
the fate of a half-Jewish pastor in the period of
1936—1946,
the case of the so-called "Brno Movement", and finally the story of
a group of younger pastors working in the magazine
"Evangelisches Leben";
by
retelling these stories,
Morée
shows the nature of this church, especially its relation
to the then-dominant National Socialism.
Religious cultures from the perspective of spaces and fields are further discussed
in the sub-chapter by
Magdalena
Myslivcova
entitled Religious and Public Space
of the Contemporary C^ech City:
Písek
in Southern Bohemia before and after the Revolution
of
1989.
As suggested in the title, the author concentrates on the specific example
of the city of
Písek,
on which she demonstrates the change in the role of religion
in the urban public spaces of a traditionally Catholic Southern Bohemian town.
She further presents the methods and strategies used by churches after
1989
to
engage in the public sphere and in the social structures of the city's society, and
that especially in the context of the pluralisation of the religious sphere and the
expansion of the market of religious offers.
LuboŠ Kropáček's
study Religious Field of Muslim Immigrant Communities analyses
the current situation of the Muslim communities in Czech Republic in the historical
context of Muslim immigration to Europe.
Kropáček
does so by emphasising
the changes in mentality that occurred in the long 19th century on both sides
of the formerly rival religious groups. Furthermore, he reflects on the efforts of
understanding these issues using sociological methods, especially when using the
472
Faith, Culture and Society
paradigms and methods of the concept of religious field (Pierre Bourdieu) and
the thought of Ernest Gellner.
The first chapter is then closed by
Kristina
Kaiserová.
Her study "The Black

-
Sch
warmer
Winkel".
The Sacral Genius
boci
of the
Šluknov
Hook in the 19th
and the Beginning of the 20th
Centuńes
shows the significance of the relationship of
(geographical) space and religion and its changes on the case of the religious
developments and changes of the
Šluknov
Hook. On the case of this relatively
small region of
1
9th century Northern Bohemia, special because of the intermingling
of various confessions (Lutheran, Old Catholic, Roman Catholic) and ethnicities
(Czechs and Germans), the author shows and proves how local individualised
religious activities and practices, as well as religiously based social and educational
activities, developed.
The second chapter of the publication, entitled Integration, Identity and Loyalty,
starts off with an analysis of the phenomenon of Cyril and Methodius tradition
by
Jiří Hanuš.
In the sub-chapter Naked are A.U'Nations without Books.
.
Cyril and
Methodius tradition at the Turn of the 20th Century as an Example of Religious Culture?,
the author presents Cyril and Methodius tradition as a type of "religious culture"
in many senses of the word. For instance, he shows the role of the
Velehrad
Cult, standing at the beginnings of Cyril and Methodius tradition as we know it
today
—
a tradition stripped of many period characteristics (Unionism has been
replaced with Ecumenism, Slavic thoughts have been discredited to a great degree,
religiousness
—
even in Moravia
—
has become much more individualised), but
whose cultural elements have remained intact.
In the next part of the second chapter,
Miroslav Kunštát
discusses the
structures and changes in loyalties, respectively, the change in the very definition
of loyalty, of the clergy of the largest churches in Socialist Czechoslovakia
(Roman Catholic, Czechoslovak Hussite, and Czech Brethren) in the study Churches
in Chechoslovakia
1948—1989:
Conflicts and Rivalries of Loyalties. This sub-chapter is
an attempt to characterise the basic "strategies of survival and compromises" of
the permitted churches and their representatives not only from the very common
paradigm of cooperation/collaboration/passive resistance/revolt, but also
—
with
the use of the commonly utilised concept of loyalty
—
as a an attempt to more
adequately place the role of churches and religious organisations (as specific
subsystems) into the wider context of the history of Czechoslovak society in the
era of state Socialism.
Another important theme of the second chapter is the issue of conversion.
Tomáš W. Pavlíček
dedicates his contribution entitled Conversion on the Path to the
Modern
Лge
to this very phenomenon. Here, the author asks the question when
and how religious culture underwent change in the Modern Age.
Pavlíček
believes
that conversions played a key role. He attempts to sort out the meanings typologically
and to interpret them through the "life meanings" of those who converted. On
the basis of collected data, the author suggests a typology of conversion illustrated
by examples not yet reflected in this sense by historiography.
473
Summary
The second chapter of the publication is closed by subchapters oriented on
the issues of religious cultures in the academic context. First
Jaroslav
Šebek,
in
his study German ¿Academic^Associations as a Space for Modernisation and Nationalisation
of Church
Ufe
in
Cachos
lovakia between the World Wars, scrutinises the trend of the
sacralisation
of national movements and the nationalisation of religious spheres,
shown in Catholic circles in Czechoslovakia between the wars on the example of
groups of German academic youth. The author shows that efforts of modernising
church life, expressed, for example, in the participation in the liturgical movement
and in the reciprocation of ideas of theological and spiritual renewal, meet in
these youth movements with the search for new ways of active Catholic parti¬
cipation in society.
In the subchapter Protestant Students of the C^ech Faculty of sirts of Charles-Ferdinand
University in the Period of
1882—1919,
Milada Sekyrková
analyses the fates of the
Protestant students of Prague's Faculty of Arts and Letters of Charles-Ferdinand
University. She shows that the students came from various social backgrounds
and from various parts of the country, albeit not evenly from all of the Czech
lands, and that their number grew (by percentage and by absolute numbers)
.
Many
graduates then assumed leading roles in academic and cultural institutes in
Czechoslovakia;
Sekyrková
mentions some of these significant
personae
and
their families.
The third chapter of the book is dedicated to the issue of Modernisation and
Cults and is comprised of two sub-chapters. In the first, "A. Better, Clearer and
More Rational Opinion on
Ufe"
—
Cremation: Cremation Movements in the C^ech Uinds at
the End of the 19h Century and the First Half of the 20th Century,
Zdeněk R. Nešpor
shows, using specific materials, the impact and the effect of the ideas and beliefs
of modernisation and urbanisation on a specific area of religious culture. The
study deals with the early and very rapid development of cremation propagation
and of the cremation movement in Czech society at the end of the
1
9th and in
the first half of the 20th centuries. The author shows that we are dealing with one
of the fundamental characteristics of modern Czech society that was, for a long
time, influenced by its specific relationship with religion, and for the majority of
people,
de
facto meant a leaning away from (the formally mainstream) Roman
Catholicism. The cremation movement and its related issues are viewed from the
perspective of both nationality groups of the Czech lands, of the Czechs and of
Czech Germans.
The following sub-chapter by
Marek Vlha,
The Utst Service to the Deceased in
Free-Thinking America and the Creech National Cemetery of Chicago: A Probe into the
Religious Milieu of the dtech-American Free-Thinking Movement shows one's enduring
need for religious symbols. The author presents his topic through the description
of the phenomenon of the massive inclination of Czech emigrants in America
towards the free-thinking movement, whose main characteristic was an escalated
anticlericalism,
especially anti-Catholicism. The free-thinking religious culture is
474
Faith, Culture and Society
then presented chiefly through the issue of death, burial rites and cemeteries,
especially that of the Czech National Cemetery in Chicago.
The fourth and final chapter of the publication is Art and Literature. The sub-
chapter by
Marcela
Zemanová-Oubrechtová,
The Idea of Finishing the Construction
of the St. 'Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle in the
Ura
before March
1848
as a Holy
Synthesis of Religious, Patriotic and Artistic Meaning, deals with the beginnings of the
final construction movement of St. Vitus Cathedral, the so-called Society for
the Finishing of St. Vitus Cathedral. The author places these beginnings into the
Central European context in the era before March
1848
and then shows that
efforts of finishing the cathedral were present throughout the previous centuries
to a various degree. According to her, the first real conditions conducive for the
final construction were not present before the 19th century, when the construction
movement formed around cathedral priest Vaclav Michael
Pěšina
and Count
František
Thun-Hohenstein. At first, the movement had a temporary board, which
was later institutionalised in
1859,
when the Society for the Finishing of St. Vitus
Cathedral was established.
In the sub-chapter Interpretation of Religious Motifs in C^ech Travelogues of the
"long" 19th Century, Jan M. Heller discusses the issues of a specific sector of
literary interpretation in the context of religious culture: the point of contact
between religious discourse and the genre of travelogues. He emphasises his analysis
on the place and function of the motifs of the symbolic language associated with
religion, and that from the perspective of their numerous levels of meaning and
their function in aesthetic texts as components of the semantic structures of Czech
travelogues of the "long" 19th century. He attempts to define a methodological
starting point for textual analysis that would respect the unusual nature of
travelogues as a "semi-fictitious" genre on the threshold between aesthetic and
documentary discourse.
Then, in the sub-chapter Uterary History as a Tool of Apologetics of Religious Culture:
Presenting C^ech Catholic Uterature during Communism and After, Martin C.
Putna
describes the specific role of the literary history associated with the Catholic
community in the Communist era in the Czech lands. He shows that the Catholic
religious culture was marginalised
(samizdat,
exile, sometimes the grey zone).
However, it still continued in its development, which
Putna
proceeds to analyse.
The author also points out the fact that the significance of the role of literary
history grew as an attempt to preserve the cultural continuity of the Catholic
community.
The fourth and final sub-chapter of the book is the study of
Veronika Seid¬
lová
Towards
František
Š
kroup's Activities in the Synagogue at
Ό
uM Street: How the
Prague Jews Negotiated with Modernity and Otherness, in which the author discloses,
with the help of the sources available, the currently unknown details of the activities
of Czech Catholic music composer
František Škroup
in the synagogue in
Dušní
Street in Prague
1836-1845
as part of the Society for the Adapted Israelite Service.
475
Summary
Here,
Seidlová
understands music as an indicator of more general cultural
transformations. Her text is a case study of the cultural change brought on by the
reform of Jewish religion and of its rituals through the means of music where
Skroup is seen as one of its main agents in the Czech lands.
Finally, we must mention that the arrangement of these individual, thematically
various case studies inevitably overlap despite of their specificity, and that in the
context of the reflection of the impact of religion on various spheres and on
segments of cultural and social life, but also retrospectively, as many themes
overlap also in the methodological sense. The concept of religious culture is thus
shown in possible interdisciplinary ways of approaching the presence, the impact
and the significance of religion in modern societies.
