Angesichts der ungünstigen Entwicklung der Lage hat das polnische Militär schon am 2. September den Entschluss gefasst, die ganze Wojewodschaft, somit auch Kattowitz, zu räumen. Es ist aber anzunehmen, dass am 3. und 4. September die Stadt noch nicht ganz von den polnischen Truppen geräumt war. Die Aufständischen samt den anderen Hüfsformationen (Pfadfinder, sog. aufständische Jugend, Polnische Militärorganisation usw.) befanden sich noch in der Stadt und patrouillierten weiterhin in ihren Gegenden, währenddessen der Rückzug der regulären polnischen Truppen verlief. Erst am 4. September in den Vormittagstunden kann die Rede von dem vollständigen Rückzug der polnischen Truppen sein. Die Aufständischen, dem militärischen Gehorsam zufolge, zogen auch aus der Stadt ab. Dem folgten auch die anderen Formationen, sei es auf Befehl oder aus eigenem Willen. Diesem organisierten Rückzug schlössen sich sowohl Einzelpersonen, wie auch lockere Gruppen von Mitgliedern verschiedener patriotischer oder paramilitärischer Organisationen an, in der Hoffnung im Landinneren noch die Möglichkeit zu finden, den Kampf fortzusetzen. Der Befehl selbst wie auch seine Implementierung ließen allerdings sehr zu wünschen übrig. In der Stadt blieben einige Posten und Gruppen der Aufständischen zurück, da sie den Befehl überhaupt nicht erhielten. Viele erfuhren darüber nur durch Zufall, manchmal auch oft zu spät. Im Allgemeinen ist anzunehmen, dass der Rückzug aus der Schlesischen Wojewodschaft wie folgt ausgesehen hat: zuerst wurde die polnische Administration und Verwaltung evakuiert, dann folgte das Militär und schließlich die Aufständischen. Allerdings machte der Rückzug auf alle, die entweder an einen äußerst für Polen optimistischen Kriegsverlauf dachten oder sich der polnischen Nation sehr nahe fühlten, einen fatalen Eindruck, was sich in Apathie oder Zusammenbruch offenbarte. Bei vielen jedoch, wie es scheint, verursachte dies einen Gegeneffekt — eine feste Entscheidung, den Widerstand um jeden Preis zu leisten. Für viele bedeutete dies, einen Grund an den Kämpfen nach dem 4. September und auch später teilzunehmen. Mit Recht kann auch die Existenz einer weiteren dritten Gruppierung angenommen werden: Menschen, die den Ernst der Lage einfach nicht bewusst waren, denen die Entwicklung der Situation an der Front unbekannt 447 Zusammenfassung blieb. Diese Menschen nahmen wohl an, dass der Rückzug der polnischen Truppen nach Osten lediglich ein taktisches Manöver sei. Ein vorübergehender Rückzug der polnischen Truppen, höchstwahrscheinlich lediglich bis zum Beginn der Offensive der Westmächte, die, wie man glaubte, bald beginnen würde. So konnten sie sich den Verteidigern der Stadt anschließen — teils aus Patriotismus und teils aus der Unkenntnis, in welcher Truppenstärke die deutschen Truppenverbände nach Kattowitz ziehen. Wenn es aber um eine große Gruppe der hiesigen Bevölkerung geht, deren Volkstum noch „schwebend war (manchmal entgegen den früheren Deklarationen), so wurden für sie diese Geschehnisse: eine hastige Räumung der Stadt durch polnische Verwaltung und Gerüchte über die Kampferfolge der deutschen Truppen zum Anlass, mit ihren Sympathien auf die deutsche Seite zu wechseln. Unter den Teilnehmern der seit dem 3. September stattfindenden Kämpfe ist zwischen zwei deutlich abgegrenzten Gruppen zu unterscheiden: einerseits jene Truppen, die ordnungsgemäße Befehle auszuführen hatten (die fast ausschließlich die Sicherung des Rückzugs der eigenen Truppen betrafen); andrerseits jene kleinere Truppen, die meistens ganz spontan von ihren Anführern aufgestellt wurden oder gar Einzelkämpfer, die keinem Befehlshaber untergeordnet waren. Die erste Gruppe, zu denen man alle noch in der Stadt verbleibenden regulären Truppen aber auch mehrere aus Aufständischen zusammengesetzte Abteilungen zählte, führte die typischen Sicherungshandlungen um schrittweise nach Osten zu rücken, der eigenen Hauptkräfte folgend. Sie kämpften hauptsächlich gegen Freikorpsverbände und lokale Diversionsgruppen und sind aus diesen Gründen ziemlich gut bekannt, da ihre Teilnehmer zum größten Teil den Septemberfeldzug 1939 und den Krieg überlebten. Was aber die zweite Gruppe betrifft, so muss angenommen werden, dass entweder ihre Mehrheit oder sogar alle von den deutschen Besatzern getötet wurden. Zu dieser Gruppe sind auch Verteidiger des Fallschirmturms und des Hauses der Aufständischen zu zählen; beide Gebäude wurden inzwischen zu Symbolen des Kattowitzer Septembers 1939 stilisiert. Nach der Einnahme der Stadt durch das deutsche Militär wurden von den neuen Machthabern fortan Aktionen gegen als unerwünscht angesehene Elemente begonnen. Das Resultat waren Hinrichtungen, die anfangs gleich am Ring ausgeführt wurden, erst später dann in den benachbarten Wäldern. Als Hauptstadt des neugegründeten Regierungsbezirks wurde Kattowitz zum Ansiedlungsort des aus dem Aitreich hineinströmenden Beamtentums, dessen Aufgabe der Aufbau einer Verwaltungsstruktur war. Due to the adverse situation the Polish army command decided to move out of Silesia including Katowice. However, we have to assume that the city on 3-4 September was not lacking army formations. Defensive insurgents with sup¬ porting formations (scouts, youths, POW-Polish Army Organization) patrolled the city and surrounding area with the help of the retreating regular army. Not before noon on 4th September can we speak of withdrawal of Polish army from the city. Insurgent units subordinate to army discipline also retreated from the city. Other formations did the same, some due to command, some on their own free will. This organized retreat was joined by single people as well as loose groups of members of various patriotic and paramilitary organizations hoping to continue fighting in other parts of the country. Both the mechanism of passing on the retreat command as well as its implemen¬ tation left a lot to be desired. Posts and OOP groups who never received the com¬ mand remained in the city. Many interested parties found out about it too late and by chance. Generally we can assume that the retreat, of first the authorities and then the army, followed finally by the authorities of insurgent organization, made an awful impression on both OOP members led by the optimistic visions of the war and others identifying themselves with Polish nationality. It resulted often in complete breakdown and even apathy. It seems it made many react in a completely different way — the will to resist at all cost. The fighters on 4th September and later recruited from this group. We can also suspect the existence of one more group of people — those not realizing the seriousness of the situation as well as the development of the situation on the front line. The retreat to the east of the Polish troops could have been treated by them as a purely tactical manoeuvre, a temporary retreat only until the expected offensive of the western allies began. They could have been among the defenders of the dry both due to patriotic excitement and the ignorance regarding the size of the German army marching towards Katowice. On the other hand the quick retreat of the polish authorities and the rumours of the Wehrmacht success often became an impulse for a large group of people with an undefined nationality to place their sympathies on the Germans The participants of the fighting on those days (beginning from 3 September) can be divided into two separate groups: first parties acting upon orders given by higher command (concerning almost solely the protection of the retreating troops) and second small groups led by spontaneously chosen local leaders and even single 449 Summary fighters not connected to any higher command. The first group including all soldiers remaining in the city and some insurgent troops carried out delay operations gradually following the retreating regular troops. The battles fought mainly with Freikorps and local diversion lived to see fairly accurate descriptions thanks to the fact that most of the participants lived through the 1939 campaign and the whole war. All or most of the second group probably lost their lives at the hand of the occupant. This group includes the defenders of the parachute tower and the Insurgent House, both symbols of September 1939 in Katowice. After the city was seized by Germany armies forces the authorities began to catch undesirable people. In result of this action the executions began, at first conducted on the city market, later in the forests surrounding the city. As the capital of the newly founded regency, Katowice became the place of destination for clerks from the old Reich called to organize the new administration.
