the Thirty Years war has hitherto been mostly perceived as a totally ex¬
cruciating, sorrowful and traumatic period of the 17th century. It certainly shattered all existing eth¬
ical and spiritual values. But we must keep in mind that it simultaneously gave rise to new upswings
in culture and science. Fair enough, the military inferno either directly or indirectly affected all Eu¬
ropean states and countries during the first half of the 17th century; the overall devastation was enor¬
mous at many places, and even though the critical situation naturally differed from region to region,
only a minor part of the European continent could escape the gory desolation. The damages in both
economic and social structures were undeniable. The general conflict took many of the participat¬
ing states to the verge of bankruptcy and economic crisis, I.e. aspects which jointly bore a breeding
ground for the expressions of local violence, for wars, unrest, uprisings and revolutions.
The author opines that the Thirty Years War can be viewed as a complex array of disagreements
within power politics, dynasties, economies, businesses, social strata, confessions and army lead¬
ers, and that the fiercest struggles were often negotiated and solved at Central-European battle¬
fields. Nonetheless, the military tempest had directly influenced not only Germany and the Czech
lands, but also the north of Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, the Baltic, the borderline areas of the
Polish-Lithuanian state, the Hungarian-Turkish border, the north-east of France as well as Spain and
the countries overseas. No wonder that the writer asks: Can anyone actually tell to what extent the
Thirty Years War had inflicted on the peripheral European regions? After all, the military clashes
occurred not only on dry land, but many of them were at sea... It therefore does not seem objective
to seek and arrive at any general conclusions as to the causes and consequences of this war, almost
painfully racked over by several generations of historians.
Society during that period came to challenge the consequences of the War, the ensuing catastro¬
phes, economic instabilities, crises, uncertainties and lives being lived in a labyrinth via developing
strong states, bureaucracies and infrastructures. Building modern statehood inevitably came hand
in hand with the transforming social relations but also with the increasing significance of armies

designed to face both internal and external threats. The given period simultaneously experienced
advances in political sciences, natural rights and international and public law, and the knowledge of
these was there to soothe the society and to strengthen the overall political system of a strong state.
The
1648 Münster
and
Osnabrück
agreements and the prolonged negotiations not only enclosed the
dreadful War but also entirely altered the face of Europe and boosted the fates of those who served
to represent the ^ -century ideology and culture. While the continent was shaken by disasters and
the armies turned towns to ruins and fires, the intellectuals began to fully appreciate the empiric
and the exact viewing of the world.
True, the Thirty Years War brought the
Habsburg
world-ruling efforts to an end, but the Peace of
Westphalia was not powerful enough to halt all European conflicts
ofthat
time. The French-Spanish
war continued and was later joined by England; the East-European scene almost burnt down due to
the Cossack revolt against Poland, and another measuring of powers among Sweden, Denmark and
Poland kindled the Baltic region. The period between
1648
and
1660
and the crisis presented to us
as the Deluge by the novelist
Henryk
Sienkiewicz
was as similar an historical catastrophe for the
Polish nation as the tragic consequences of the White Mountain were for the Czechs.
Knowing that the northern war of
1655—1660
was not only the result of the prolonged domestic cri¬
sis within the Polish-Lithuanian state but also the consequence of the Baltic issue, the disputes over
the
Vasa
heritage and, last but not least, the Thirty Years War, we should at least consider that the
concepts general war and the Steinberg-coined so-called Thirty Years War are somewhat sub¬
stantiated. The conflict which had changed the whole of Europe thus shall be extended to incorpo¬
rate not only the prologues of the War (e.g., the war for the Cleves-Jiilich inheritance, the fights for
Rudolph IPs majesty and the Estates unrest in Hungary) but also its reflections in both Western and
Eastern Europe (such as the trade fights between the Netherlands and England, the Chmielnicki up¬
rising, the English Civil War and revolution, and the fights for the
dominium

as regional microprobes. It is hardly sustainable today to merely limit the War to the territory of the
Holy Roman Empire from the point of current historical science, and encompassing a more global
view will be much more appropriate and closer to reality.
There is, however, no doubt that the Thirty Years War
-
distant more than
400
years from us to¬
day
-
will continue to attract the attention of professional historians, archive keepers, art histori¬
ans as well as laymen interested in history. We are at the same time well aware that the motives of
the leading actors of the War (such as Albert
Wallenstein,
Gustav Adolph
and Richelieu) vastly var¬
ied and have also been almost endlessly explored and discussed
-
equally as the general ^ -centu¬
ry crisis, military revolution, confessionalization, imperial patriotism, the Estates and Absolutism.
