THE LORDS OF
SVOJŠÍN.
A Family of Noblemen, Lords and Knights
from the Basin of the River
Mze
Recent repairs of the church of St. Peter and Paul in
Svojšín
have
significantly enhanced current knowledge about this Romanesque
building. The date of its origin has been shifted as far back as to
1160s, based on dendrochronological analysis. Who sponsored
the construction of such a splendid church equipped with a tower
and a tribune inserted into the western part of the nave? It was
probably
Ctibor
(I,) whose career culminated by appointment as
the Chamberlain of King Vladislaus around
1165.
Ctibor
wasn t
probably the first known member of the
(Svojšín)
family. Its ori¬
gins can be related to the foundation of Benedictine convent in
Kladruby
in western Bohemia nearby the
Mže
river by Duke Vla¬
dislaus
L
in
1115.
Oldřich
(I.), holding the title of comes, appertai¬
ning to the representatives of the highest nobility of Early Middle
Ages in Bohemia, appeared among the benefactors of the convent
already some time before
1140.
Beneda (I.), another convent dona-
tor, is mentioned even by the title

princeps
in another record of
acts, probably from years
1158-1166.
Analysis of landed property
of later generations of the family implies that its power was based
in the area of upper
Mže
river, centered around
Svojšín,
firstly do¬
cumented by the predicate of brothers
Oldřich
(II.) and Beneda
(IL),
sons of
Ctibor
in
1177.
Obviously, a family seat (curia) was
established in
Svojšín,
including a Romanesque church as a mate¬
rialization of the prestige of a magnate family.

In the middle of the 13th Century the representatives of new
family generations rised to build two early Gothic castles. The existen¬
ce of
Třebel
is documented by a predicate from
1251.
The beginnings
of Volfstejn are dated by dendrochronology into the 1260s. Two inde¬
pendent noble family branches of
Třebel
and Volfstejn respectively,
have thus separated from the owners of
Svojšín.
The importance of
all family branches started to decline in the 14th Century. Individual
members were loosing their unambiguous status of high nobility, and
their nomenclature varied from dominus to less prestigious miles or ell·
ens. The preserved tax registry of
Pilsen
province from
1379
shows that
the family landed estates were divided, and the size of individual esta¬
tes was far below the level corresponding to high nobility.
A new family branch, represented by
Petr (I.) Zmrzlík
of
Svoj¬
šín,
appeared in the 1390s.
Petr
had no relations to
Svojšín
locality,
his family membership is documented only by his use of traditio¬
nal family predicate and blazon (argent, three bars gules), docu¬
mented as early as
1284.
Petr (I.) Zmrzlík
held the high office of
royal mint custodian
(thesaurańus
regis)
from
1400
at latest, and he
was promoted to the highest mint-master
(magister
monetae) by the
end of
1404,
supervising silver mining and minting of the Prague
Grossus in
Kutná Hora.
He held the office to the satisfaction of king
Venceslas IV. until the end of his reign in
1419.
Besides,
Petr
was
a member of the Privy Council and acquired a substantial proper¬
ty of his own, including a palace in St. Jacob s street in the Prague
Old Town, the castle
Żleby
with towns of
Uhelná Příbram
and Cho-
těboř
in eastern Bohemia, the castle
Orlík
and towns of
Breznice,
Lnáře,
and Kasejovice in the southern Bohemia, as well as the castle
Kašperk
at the foothills of the Bohemian Forrest. Nevertheless, he
was still perceived as a member of lower nobility (miles). An influen¬
tial courtier, he also became a strong supporter of the reform mo¬
vement at the Prague University, and personal friend and protector
of
Jan Hus.
His cultural interests are documented especially by the
iluminated manuscript of a new Czech translation of the Bible, the
so called Bible of
Litoměřice
and
Třeboň,
also called ZmrzHk s

Petr
also initiated a new Czech translation of the Chronicle of
Troy. When the hussite revolution started,
Petr Zmrzlík
was depo¬
sed from the highest mint-master office by the king
Sigismund.
He
took an important place in the ranks of the hussite resistance, and
following the conquest of
Kutná Hora
by the hussite army in
1421,
he was re-appointed to the office of the highest mint-master. Ho¬
wever, he was infected by plague in
Kutná Hora,
and succumbed to
the disease upon his return to Prague. He was hurried in the church
of St. Michael in the Prague
Oíd
Town.
Petr s sons,
Petr
(IL),
Jan (L), and Václav (L)
were also resol¬
ved hussite supporters and allies of
Tábor.
However, in the 1430s
they tended to the moderate hussite group that promoted peace
even at the cost of accepting the Emperor
Sigismund
as the Czech
King. Their properties were confirmed, and even expanded along
the Vltava river by some smaller estates originally belonging to the
Church. However, peace ruled only for short time in Bohemia. The
Zmrzliks fought for decades in repeated local clashes with their
catholic oponents,
Oldřich
of
Rožmberk
among them. The situa¬
tion calmed down only during the reign of Vladislaus II.
Jagiełło.
Václav
(HI.)
Zmrzlík
of
Svojšín and Orlík
was even promoted to
lord-nobility in
1500.
However, he was apparently less successful
manager, and he sold all of his land estates during his long life.
On the contrary, his nephew
Petr
(III.)
Zmrzlík
of
Svojšín
enhan¬
ced his inherited estates of
Breznice
and
Vimperk
by buying addi¬
tional villages in the Bohemian Forrest foothills and built up from
these acquisitions the new
dominium
of Neprochovy. But all was
lost because of his participation in the nobility revolt against king
Ferdinand I. in
1547.
Confiscation of property, and premature de¬
ath of his son
Zdeněk
(II.) brought this family branch to an end.
The last male member of the family,
Václav
(III.)
Zmrzlík
of
Svoj¬
šín,
died in
1568,
more than
80
years old. Being an adherent of old
utraquism, his burrial was allowed in the St. Vitus cathedral at the
Prague Castle, next to his late wife
Markéta
of
Švamberk.
