REMEMBERING COMMUNISM: NOSTALGIA,
TRAUMA, RIDICULE, SHAME, OBLIVION
Abstract
The text is based on the results of an empirical research on the types of memory
of Communism. Most prominent among these is nostalgia-memory that sees the past
primarily in terms of consumption and security. Traumatic memories and the crimes
of the regime articulate the deficits of those times, among which the least remembered
is the deficit of freedom. The memory of Communism is formed primarily through
pre-modern tools: personal, family and birth experience. Modern mechanisms of uni¬
versal education are entirely absent. These results are fully predictable, since the offi¬
cial state policy for the study of Communism in school prefers to illuminate this period
through public debates rather than through academic research.

IDEAS REGARDING THE ECONOMY OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC
OF BULGARIA AS A SOURCE OF NOSTALGIA FOR COMMUNISM
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the preservation and revival of the posi¬
tive perceptions of the communist economy among a significant proportion of the adult
population in Bulgaria. This process is a result of the operation of two major factors. One
is the lack of accurate and adequate information about the actual serious problems of the
economic development of Bulgaria in the communist period
-
problems that were com¬
pletely silenced at the time and even today are often deliberately misinterpreted. Another
factor is the effect of the acute social and economic difficulties Bulgaria has been suffer¬
ing in the context of the global financial and economic crisis. The study has led to the
following conclusion: despite the widespread feelings of nostalgia with regard to Com¬
munism, Bulgarian society does not recognize the communist organization of economy
as a means of overcoming the current economic problems.

THE
10™
OF NOVEMBER IN THE MEMORY
OF THE POLITICAL ELITE
Abstract
November
10,1989,
marks the beginning of the Bulgarian transition from com¬
munist rule to democracy and market economy. Over twenty years later, this date re¬
mains controversial, evoking different interpretations among, scholars, political elites
and voters alike. This study focuses on the contrasting views of the political elite re¬
garding November
10
and the transition in general. It further examines the implica¬
tions of the different interpretations for historical memory, the evaluation of the previ¬
ous regime, and the political dynamics in the country.

HISTORY AS MEMORY OR FAIRY TALE

A PERSONAL VIEW
ON COMMUNISM IN BULGARIA
Abstract
The paper presents the personal view of the author about the way Bulgarian
people respond to their past, especially to the Communist period. It is based on the
study of historical memory conducted in
2010 - 2011
covering majority and minority
groups. The paper elaborates on the reasons why the "choice of memory" of the people
is focused on special figures, places and events, and why, as a rule, there is a lack of
adequate public knowledge about the essence of the Communist regime in Bulgaria.
Evelina Kelbecheva is Professor of History at the American University in
Bulgaria. She is a graduate of Sofia University and holds a Ph.D. from the Bulgarian
Academy of Sciences. Between
1993

THE RECENT PAST AND ITS REFLECTION IN THE PRESENT
Abstract
The text traces the public and scientific debate after
1989
regarding Bulgarian
Communism. The focus is on the conflict between historical and collective memories
ofthat
time and the coexistence of multiple memories. Special attention is paid to the
local projections of the so-called post-communist nostalgia and its role in the process
of rationalization of the recent past. In this context, the study outlines the starting posi¬
tions in the Bulgarian
"Historikerstreit"
regarding the moral assessment

time.

HOPE FOR THE PAST? THE SOCIALIST NOSTALGIA
20
YEARS LATER
The article deals with socialist nostalgia not as part of contemporary popular
culture but rather as a biographical and life-world phenomenon. The argument is
based on around
90
narrative interviews conducted in five places in Bulgaria during
2006-08
in the course of two oral history projects focused on the memory of socialism
'from below'. From
a
constructivist
perspective, I view nostalgia as a backward looking
utopia,
i.e. a longing for an idealised past pointing to the deficits of the present. How¬
ever, in contrast to views of nostalgia as an escapist stance, or at best a compensatory
and sentimental critique of the present, I stress its potential for symbolic coping with
post-socialist changes.

Her research interests are in the
field of oral history and anthropology of socialism and post-socialism, biographical

BULGARIAN COMMUNISM IN INDIVIDUAL
AND INSTITUTIONAL MEMORY
Abstract
The paper analyses two types of memory
-
the memory of the people and the
memory embedded in institutions and institutional culture. On the basis of
34
inter¬
views, conducted in the frame of the project "Remembering Communism" the author
argues that there is no collective memory of Communism, only individual memories
within the framework of common social factors, as R.
Koselleck
wrote. This memory
is focused on important events in one's everyday life; most respondents do not re¬
member any political event, and Communist society is perceived as totally apolitical.
Unlike those whose memories are overall bright and nostalgic about the past, half the
respondents evaluate the period negatively. The serious problem, according to the au¬
thor, is related to over-centralization of administrative power, which is the Communist
heritage in institutions, and a factor of corruption and ineffectiveness. The example
given is the normative regulation of the
EU
programme SAPARD.
Dr. Petya Kabakchieva is Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology,
Sofia University, and Head of the Department. Her main research interests are in the
field of historical sociology, political sociology and social inequalities, conceptualiza¬
tion of communist societies; inequalities under Communism and new forms of in¬
equalities; civil society and civic participation; institutional culture; new nationalisms.

BULGARIAN EXPERIENCE IN FACING THE COMMUNIST PAST:
AN OPTIMISTIC PERSPECTIVE
Abstract
In contrast with the popular understanding that the Bulgarian public was un¬
able to face its communist past, the article argues that the Bulgarian experience is an
example of a positive, although painful, development. The extensive use of the debate
on the communist past for partisan political purposes in the beginning of the
1990s
led to exhaustion of the public's expectations, to disillusionment and disappointment,
which became predominant until
2006.
The efforts of civil society and the establish¬
ment of the new Dossier Commission in
2006
signalled the beginning of the real
process of facing the communist past, which resulted in the opening of the archives
of the communist State Security, lustration in the diplomatic service, and a critical
re-examination of the communist period that gradually started to pass into popular
culture. The attitude in Europe towards the communist past of the Eastern part of the
continent remains ambivalent, and Bulgaria can contribute to the debate by sharing its
experience, knowledge, and unsuccesses in this respect.
Momchil Metodiev is Editor-in-Chief of the Bulgarian monthly journal Chris¬
tianity and Culture and a research fellow in the Institute for Studies of the Recent Past
in Sofia. His research interests are focused on the history of Bulgarian Communism
and particularly on the history of the State Security and of the Bulgarian Orthodox
Church. He is the author of the books Between the Cross and Compromise. The Or¬
thodox Church and the Communist Regime in Bulgaria (Sofia,
2010),

THE "HIDDEN LESSONS" OF THE ADMISSION POLICIES
DURING THE COMMUNIST REGIME IN BULGARIA
Abstract
The paper uses the sociological concept of hidden curriculum to discuss the influ¬
ence of admission policies to higher education during the communist regime in Bulgaria
on attitudes and models of individual behavior. Two main mechanisms of admission
policies are outlined
-
a) discriminatory measures (the purges and the requirement for a
Note issued by the Fatherland Front) against certain categories of young people deemed
unreliable by the communist regime and b) social privileges for different groups defined
on the basis of social and socio-political criteria. The analysis is based on five personal
stories. It is argued that the socialist admission policies "taught lessons" such as fear and
obedience, tolerance towards corruption, erosion of moral norms, disobedience towards
laws. It is also claimed that the use of social engineering in the creation of the new social¬
ist intelligentsia was one of the main factors influencing the development of the country
before and after the fall of Communism in
1989.

BOTH THE CAT AND THE

MEMBERS
OF THE CAT FAMILY
Abstract
Using examples from studies on the Bulgarian communist regime, this com¬
mentary raises some methodological issues concerning the very essence of sociologi¬
cal and historical research. It is argued that some indispensable requirements for a
thorough social analysis are: l) revealing not only the continuity and similarities be¬
tween social events which have occurred in different historical periods but also their
specificity and essence;
2)
taking into account the embeddedness of social phenom¬
ena in the wider social context. It is also pointed out that intellectual debates and criti¬
cism are fruitful only when they are based on intellectual honesty and correctness.

THE STATE AGAINST THE EMIGRATION
Abstract
The article studies the chronology, stages and methods, used by the communist
state in its struggle against the Bulgarian political emigration in the period
1944-1989.
The author describes the role of the institutions (Bulgarian Communist Party, State
Security, sections of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, etc.) that elaborated and con¬
ducted the policy towards Bulgarians living abroad.
Boyko Kiryakov is a History graduate of Sofia University "St.

His interests are in topics related to Bulgarians living in foreign countries, specifi¬
cally, the policy of the Bulgarian state towards Bulgarian emigrants.

IS IT TRANSNATIONAL? A NEW PERSPECTIVE
IN THE STUDY OF COMMUNISM
Abstract
The article presents a comprehensive review of the transnational perspective
in the study of Communism and the implications of this methodological turn for the
transformation of the field itself. While advancing new topics and interpretative stand¬
points with a view to expanding the scope of such an initiative in current scholarship,
the author argues that the transnational approach is important on two levels. First,
it helps to de-localize and de-parochialize national historiographies. Second, it can
reconstruct the international dimension of the communist experience, with its mul¬
tiple geographies, spaces of entanglement and transfer, and clustered, cross-cultural
identity-building processes. The article concludes that this new approach to the study
of communist regimes/movements can reveal that a world long perceived as mostly
turned inward was in fact implicated in wider contexts of action and imagination and
not particularly limited by the ideological segregationism of the Cold War.

TWENTY YEARS LATER
.
REMARKS ON (SOCIALIST) NOSTALGIA
Abstract
Two decades later, how does society perceive some crucial moments of its past?
The issue is discussed with reference to three determining events in Bulgarian history:
the establishment of the modern Bulgarian State in
1878;
the communist-led coup in
1944;
the collapse of Communism in
1989.
It is shown how
20
years later those turn¬
ing points are reassessed, the initial Utopia has faded away, and the whole panoply
of possible interpretations has emerged. Persistent myths have appeared and canoni¬
cal versions of the events have crystallized. Special emphasis is put on the continuity
embedded in the communist regime, on its numerous antecedents in the past. It is
asserted that, in many ways, the Bulgarian society of the mid
1940s
was already preg¬
nant with Communism. Finally, an exercise of counter-factual history is proposed with
reference to a hypothetical non-communist trajectory and the sequels of the regime
are commented.
Roumen Avramov is Permanent Fellow at the Centre for Advanced Studies,
Sofia. He has been a senior research fellow at the Institute of Economics of the Bulgar¬

NORMALIZATION VS. DEMONIZATION
OF THE COMMUNIST PAST
Abstract
In recent years we have witnessed an ever-growing nostalgia towards the time of
state socialism as well as continuing attempts to normalize the communist regime. The
article examines one of the reactions to this phenomenon, namely the attempts to cre¬
ate an anti-communist master narrative in historiography and the intrinsic contradic¬
tions of this endeavor. It demonstrates that, to a large extent, the new anti-communist
canon uses explanatory models and rhetorical techniques borrowed from communist
historiography itself. Special attention is paid to the deepening division of historical
studies along political and ideological lines. The article offers a critique of the politi-
cization of historical studies and of the attempts to instrumentally use them for the
purposes of political propaganda.
Alexander Vezenkov is an independent scholar based in Sofia. His research in¬
terests include 19th- and lOth-century urban history, institutional history of the commu¬
nist regimes, as well as different aspects of the Tanzimat period in the Ottoman Empire.
