THE SLAVONIC TRANSLATION OF PATRIARCH PHOTIOS
LETTER TO THE BULGARIAN PRINCE BORIS-MICHAEL
TATYANA
SLAVO VA
(SUMMARY)
Right after the conversion of the Bulgarians to Christianity, Patriarch Photios
wrote a letter to the Bulgarian prince Boris-Michael in the form of religious and
political guidance, consisting of two parts: the first
-
a dogmatic exposition of
Eastern orthodox church (with the statement of faith and a narrative of the Seven
ecumenical councils), and the second
-
practical instructions on the behavior of the
prince. Although addressed to the Bulgarian ruler, the Letter reached far beyond
its original addressee. Its dissemination in Greek copies from the 13th to the 16th
centuries, in Russian manuscripts between the 16th and 19th centuries, the existence
of a Slavonic print version (dated
1644)
and a Latin one (dated
1651),
its French
(1718)
and Russian
(1779)
translations reveal that during the whole medieval period
it was topical for the orthodox Christians in Byzantium and
Slávia
Orthodoxa, as
well as for the Catholics in Western Europe during the Enlightenment. Photios
treatise was recommended as a political and literary read to tsar Ivan
Grozni,
and
about two centuries later, it was read to King Louis XV before he had come of age.
The current book explores the Slavonic translation of this Letter, which has been
preserved only in Russian copies from the beginning of the 16th century until the
beginning of the
20*
century as well as in the print version of the Kirilova Kniga,
published in Moscow in
1644.
The present study uncovers archeographical data
on fifteen copies of the Letter
-
both in complete versions (Russian State Library,
Moscow, f.

and abridged ones (Russian State Library, St. Petersburg, f.

f.
209
№ 572;
State Historical Museum, Khludov collection
№ 333;
Russian National
Library, collection of Theological Academy
№ 52).
Four of these versions are being
introduced for the first time in scholarly circulation. The study comments on the
texts surrounding the Letter as well as the interest in it on behalf of the heretics in
Novgorod and Moscow during the 15th century. Although the composition was very
popular and widely disseminated in the Russian church and literary environment, a
number of Bulgarianisms in the text suggest the possible existence of a Bulgarian
archetype.
Special attention is paid to the language of the Slavonic translation
-
its
orthography, morphology and syntax, vocabulary and word formation. It is
precisely on the basis of the language that the translation can be dated as there are
no literary, historical, paleographical codicological and other evidence about it.
The investigation of the language allows for the translation to be traced back to the
342
literary production of the 14th century, more precisely, to the school of Euthymius of
Turnovo. On morphological
-
syntactical level the connection with it is visible in the
standardization of specific noun endings, the degrees of adjectives, the functioning of
the demonstrative pronoun as third-person in oblique cases, the use of demonstrative
pronouns with a defining function when the definite article is totally missing, the
transformation of the relative pronoun into a tool for expressing definiteness through
calquing of the prepositioned Greek definite article, the abundance of syntactic and
participle constructions, the strict observing of Greek word order- sometimes even at
odds with Slavonic speech, and many other linguistic features. The lexical and word
formation characteristics also link the Slavonic translation of the Letter of Patriarch
Photios to the Bulgarian (South Slavonic) literary practices from the I4ih century and
the representatives of the school of Euthymius. The latter tradition is also traceable in
the adopted translation approach, aiming at the greatest possible proximity with the
Greek original as manifested in several ways: calquing of composite Greek words,
preserving Greek word order, word-for-word and morph-for-morph translation, and
others. A great number of the characteristic features of the Slavonic text resemble
the literary norm, adopted by the editors and translators from the Holy Mountain
(Mount
Athos),
which was further codified by Patriarch Euthymius. As a whole,
all the linguistic parameters could not have been reflected in the translation if the
translator of the Letter had not been specially trained to observe them. This is why
it can be ascertained to a great extent that he was certainly a representative of the
Turnovo literary school.
The reason behind the creation of the Slavonic translation of Photios treatise
should be sought in its primary message
-
to sustain the foundations of the Christian
faith and its embodiment in the running of the state. This topic is highly relevant
at the end of the 14th century in view of the historical context and the events taking
place during the decline of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. As early as King
Ivan-Alexander s rule many emblematic for the times manuscripts included texts,
which discussed questions of faith and served the official authorities to counter the
emerging heretical unrest. Thus it turns out that Patriarch Photios major intention
~ to protect the newly Christened Bulgarians and their prince Boris-Michael from
various heretical teachings
-
was topical even five centuries later. In Russia, too,
at the end of the
ІЗ«1
and the beginning of the
16*
centuries there were historical
factors determining the need for a text like the Letter because of the heresy of the
Judaizers (Zhidovstvuyushchiye). Our linguistic investigation, however, reveals
that the translation can be dated approximately a century earlier, and in that case it
could be tied as a whole with the Slavonic South and Mount
Athos.
No matter where
the translation of Photios message was produced, it is beyond doubt that it was
translated by a highly erudite representative of the Euthymius literary school, who
put into practice its language and literary norms. Most probably, the translator who
had a perfect command over Greek, had worked in a huge scriptorium where he had
343
access to the ruler s documents. It is logical to presuppose that precisely during the
Second Bulgarian Kingdom there emerged the need to make a similar translation,
connected to statehood and faith in the 14th century.
The book contains a critical edition of the Slavonic text of the Letter of Patriarch
Photios based on what has been accepted as a primary manuscript from the Russian
State Library, Moscow, f.
178 № 3112.
This choice is grounded in the fact that it
has been one of the earliest in time (the first quarter of the
Іб 1
с);
it contains the
complete text in its correct version and has not been published and researched so
far. Interpretations have been provided on the basis of seven other complete copies
and the print edition
oïKirilova kniga.
Drawing upon these sources, the textological
history of the Slavonic translation has been reconstructed by means of the geneology
of the manuscripts. The juxtaposition of their text reveals a closed tradition, where
two major divergences of the manuscripts can be delineated on the basis of general
textual characteristics
-
omissions, additions, errors, reinterpretations, and word
order shifts in comparison with the Greek original.
The study is equipped with an index-glossary of word forms in the text of the
primary manuscript from the Russian State Library, Moscow, f.
178 № 3112,
which
contains
2075
lexical units. Each glossary entry includes a title word (etymologically
standardized according to Old Bulgarian spelling), defined meaning, and a list of all
registered word forms, referring to their place in the text and their Greek equivalents.
