CENTURIES: SOCIETY, LIFESTYLE AND CULTURE
The presentation and analysis of the evidence about the Bulgarian society,
lifestyle and culture in the hagiography from the thirteenth through the
fifteenth century give diverse types of information that refers to different
areas. The strong idealization of the lives of saints, propagated political ide¬
ology and the great number of legendary motifs make it difficult to discern
what is real in the
hagiographie
texts. This does not affect their value as
sources
ofinformation;
it just requires that they be used with the necessary
attention due to the specifics of this type of works. They are undoubtedly
rich in evidence about the spiritual world of the Bulgarians, curious details
of their everyday life, and especially in information that we can derive for
the Bulgarian society, the attitude towards certain social groups, their func¬
tions and position. Hagiography definitely deserves a place at least as an ad¬
ditional source for the medieval Bulgarian history, although there are issues
such as education and religious life, for example, where
hagiographie
works
should be considered primary sources par excellence.
The evidence derived from the
hagiographie
literature in this book by
no means exhausts all the topics one can find data about in it. It contains
also information about political events, about the economy of monasteries,
as well as data about towns and villages. Collecting and summarizing this
information can reveal interesting new details from the Bulgarian history
and can be of help when dealing with other sources.
Presenting the evidence about the Bulgarian society in the hagiography
shows that, one way or another, these works contain information about the
institutions which represent the state
-
the ruler, the patriarch, as well as
a number of social groups. Some representatives of the social strata are in¬
cluded in the hagiography and hymnography as holy persons and in such
cases the information about them is much more detailed but on the other
hand, is strongly idealized. Some people may be present as persons who
are related to the stories in the
hagiographie
narrative, and then there is a
greater opportunity for the scholar to find evidence about their real quali¬
ties and functions. The situation with the ruler and the head of the Bulgar¬
ian church is a bit trickier, as they are described in the best light in order to

meet the perfect idea for them; to strengthen their power or to impose a
specific political ideology.
Hagiography also contains quite a lot of evidence about daily life and
customs of the Bulgarians, however that information needs to be confirmed
or supplemented with other sources. The reason for this is that those data
are mostly fragmentary, as the writers did not consider it necessary to give
descriptions of dwellings, food and objects that were known to all. They
usually paid more attention to things that deviated from the commonly ac¬
cepted or that had impressed them. In other cases the information about
the way of life was enriched in order to provide additional clarification of a
specific action or element of the
hagiographie
narrative.
As part of mediaeval art and letters, the
hagiographie
and hymno-
graphic works, created by Bulgarian men of letter, are direct evidence of the
achievements and trends in the spiritual life of the Bulgarians from thir¬
teenth to the fifteenth century. On the other hand, hagiographical narra¬
tives and eulogies contain descriptions and information about other cultur¬
al activities such as music, art, education and more. The Orthodox religion
undoubtedly played a significant role, which had an impact on all areas of
life
-
from the establishment of secular power and education to customs
and feasts related to Bulgarian way of life. Religious life did not hinder the
development of culture, only gave certain guidelines in accordance with the
values characteristic of Christianity. During the period from the thirteenth
to the fifteenth century a number of
hagiographie
and hymnological works
were created and translated, and preserved their significance over the next
centuries too. A testament to that is their widespread in manuscript mis¬
cellanea from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, which was due to li¬
turgical needs, to a striving to preserve the memory of the Bulgarian realm
and to the individual interest of some writers. Thanks to that a number of
works from the First and Second Bulgarian Tsardom reached us. Since the
sixteenth century, as far as we know, new
hagiographie
works appeared
-
Lives and divine services, devoted to the new-martyrs St. George of Sofia
and St. Nicholas the New of Sofia. These works are based on earlier tradi¬
tions, but they also include new elements. Suffering in the name of Christ,
confrontation with the infidels by refusing to adopt Islam were the leading
motives now. Hagiography is again an echo of the reality typical for the Or¬
thodox Bulgarians; again it seeks to impose a particular model of behavior
and show the superiority of Christianity.
It is difficult for us to sift the real from the legendary evidence in
hagi¬
ographie
literature, but we should not forget how the medieval Bulgarians
perceived what was written. They did not consider Lives to be fairy tales,

although it should be noted that later many of the plots became the basis
for a number of fairy tales, not only in Bulgarian folklore, but also in the
foreign, even Catholic literature (most early Christian saints are venerated
by both the Eastern and the Western Church). Both the Bulgarian men of
letters and their audience
-
readers and listeners took the narratives about
the lives of saints for true stories. In hagiography there is no sign of doubt
that what happened to the holy people before and after their deaths was
true. The only uncertainty the writers had refers to their worries about the
quality of their writing, whether they could tell the stories well, whether
they missed something or wrote it in a wrong way, but they never doubted
the idea, or the holy deeds. So I guess it was perfectly normal for them to
preserve the historical memory of the Bulgarians in texts created to keep
the memory of the holy people. Therefore, it seems entirely justifiable to
state, as some scholars do, that some
hagiographie
works can be considered
as part of the Bulgarian medieval historical sources. From this perspective,
the value of the
hagiographie
literature as a source increases not only be¬
cause of the study of issues related to the conception of the world, attitudes
and spiritual quests of the Bulgarians.
In some cases hagiography gives a partial picture, in others
-
a summary
view or conversely
-
completely ignores the issues, people and other de¬
tails of medieval life of the Bulgarians. Nevertheless, the information in the
hagiography from the thirteenth to the fifteenth century reveals aspects of
the life of medieval Bulgarians which are poorly represented in other types
of sources, and opens new opportunities to enrich the historical studies on
medieval Bulgarian history.
