adam_text | Marine
and freshwater systems are being
placed under pressure like never before by a
bigger, more demanding human population.
The need for sustainable solutions to allow for
the development and conservation of these
systems has become an international priority. By
exploring current exploitation practices and their
consequences from an ecological perspective, this
timely book guides you towards an understanding
of the factors that limit the productivity of
aquatic systems and influence their responses
to exploitation pressure.
From a consideration of the ecological effects
of harvesting aquatic resources—both living
and non-living—Ecology of Aquatic Management
continues to a discussion of the consequences
for aquatic systems of transport, waste disposal,
and recreational pursuits. Finally, effective
management strategies for natural hazards, the
provision of ecological goods and services, and
the restoration of aquatic systems are considered.
The role of science in providing an understanding
of the effects of human interaction with aquatic
systems is emphasized throughout, along with
a consideration of the role of ecology in the
sustainable management of the consequences
of human activity.
•
Offers a holistic view of the exploitation
and management of marine and freshwater
systems from an ecological perspective.
•
Considers how ecological principles can be
used to inform effective and sustainable
management of the consequences of
human interventions in aquatic systems.
NEW TO THIS EDITION:
>
Case studies bring context to the
subjects being discussed, and illuminate
the methodological aspects of aquatic
management.
>-
A new chapter on the dynamics of aquatic
systems highlights the challenges faced
in monitoring systems and establishing
causality.
>
Selected successes and failures of
large-scale ecosystem manipulation are
considered in a new chapter on ecological
restoration schemes.
>■
New sections cover emerging issues,
including non-native invasive species,
valuation of ecological goods and services,
and the Water Framework Directive.
