Challenging some ot the existing narratives on
minorities in the Middle East, this book
provides an overview of the historical social
formation of
minorit)·
groups within the region
and examines how the status of these groups, as
well as their relationship with a range of legal
frameworks, have shifted and changed over time.
In exploring the context in which minority
rights operate within this conflicted region, the
book investigates how minorities engage with
(or are excluded from) various sites ot power and
how state practice in dealing with minorities
(otten ostensibly based on Islamic authority)
intersects with and informs modern
constitutionalism and international law.
The book identifies who exactly can be classed
as a minority group, analysing in detail the
different religious and ethnic minorities across
the region.The book also pays special attention
to the plight ofminorities who are spread
between various states, often as the result ot
connect. It assesses the applicable domestic
legislative instruments within three countries
investigated as case studies: Iraq, Syria, and
Lebanon, and highlights key domestic remedies
that could serve as models for ensuring greater
social cohesion and greater inclusion ot
minorities in the political lite ot these countries.
Joshua Castellino is Professor of Law and Dean
of the School of Law at Middlesex University,
London, LTK.
Kathleen A. Cavanaugh is a Lecturer in Law at
the Irish Centre for Human Rights ot the
National Universirv ot Ireland, Galwav.
