Summary
In the second half of the nineteenth and in the early twentieth century, historians of the
Lviv circle, along with the Krakow and Warsaw circles, belonged to the leading ones on the
Polish territory. Also other ethnic groups that lived in
Galicia,
e.g. Ukrainians, participated in
it. At that time the most important groups of Polish historians, on a par with leading European
countries, were located in
Galicia, Lviv
and Krakow. Many factors contributed to the singular
specificity of the Lviv historians' circle and differentiated it from Krakow: Lviv's location, its
genius loci, multiethnicity, borderland ambience, stronger middle class and thus clearer liberal-
democratic traditions that allowed for an easier assimilation of newcomers from the Kingdom
of Poland and the Prussian partition, weaker bonds with the conservative
Stańczyk
circles
(koła stańczykowskie),
a weaker dependence of historical views on political ones and the related
research topics and interests. Likewise, these factors contributed to Lviv's interdisciplinarity,
which led to its inclusion in research on both the history of historiography and the bibliological
and cultural studies.
The monograph is situated in the sub-discipline called the history of science, but also
broadly understood humanities with developed motifs of historical bibliology, library science,
editing, and media history; it also takes up a problem area of cultural studies as it demonstrates
the culture-building activity of an outstanding intelligentsia group, which the circle of Lviv
historians of the studied period exemplifies.
The Lviv historians' circle in the era of the Galician autonomy developed dynamically in
terms of activities in the area of science, research, pedagogy and professional orientation, as
well as manifold artistic activity. It also gained potential in quantitative terms, including
329
historians
sensu stricto
and
sensu
largo. The monograph is the first comprehensive study of
a regional historians' circle on the Polish territory in the second half of the 19th century and at
the beginning of the 20th century. The author based his analysis on a broad spectrum of sources
from the archives and libraries in Lviv (sources that have not been studied so far), Warsaw,
Wroclaw and Krakow. The analysis of such sources made it possible to present a picture, as
compíete
as possible, of the Lviv historians' milieu in the era of Positivism, Neoromanticism
and Modernism and their place in historiography.
The community of Lviv historians was relatively stable. The two largest groups studied
are persons who stayed, worked and lived in Lviv for the entire period of their professional
career or for the span of at least twenty years. These groups make up almost half of the studied
community
(48,1%)-
The community was enriched by numerous outstanding historians
who had previously worked at renowned academic centres in Austria, Germany and other
West-European countries or came from other partitions, especially the Prussian one, and
who had been educated at universities in Western Europe. Such scholars from other centres
strengthened innovatory tendencies in the Lviv milieu, in terms of academic administration,
scholarship, historiography and also general creativity. Thus the influences from other centres
in terms of incoming scholars constituted one of the moving forces behind innovation and
originality of the entire community of Lviv historians. Lviv also contributed to the intellectual
enhancement of other centres, e.g. Krakow, Warsaw, Vienna. Scholars from Lviv who later
398
gained renown in Poland and even abroad moved to universities in these locations. The Lviv
historians formed at that time considerably contributed to the development of Polish, and also
Ukrainian, historiography in the later period of the Second Polish Republic
(1918-1945).
The form of the academic and administrative work as well as the creative interests of Lviv
historians was also influenced by their ethnic background. The Polish group was definitely
dominant both quantitatively and qualitatively
(77,2%
of the entire milieu) but a contribution
was also made by the Ukrainian group
(15,5%),
and to a lesser extent, by the German (Austrian
- 4,3%)
and Jewish ones
(3,0%).
The entire sociological profile of the circle was also affected
by the geographical (territorial) background of the historians. Three quarters of the scholars
came from
Galicia
(75,0%),
including
58,0%
from Eastern
Galicia
(and
14,4%
from Lviv).
Some of the Lviv historians, including the outstanding ones, came from the other partitions
and from different lands of Austria. In sociological terms it was an elite group who, although
originating from different social groups (bourgeois, petty bourgeois, peasants), nevertheless
had a dominant gentry-intelligentsia genealogy
(76,8%).
As many as
93,0%
of Lviv historians had higher education. In addition to the regular
university degree, they also did supplementary studies, often at renowned universities of
Western Europe. They studied at
60
universities (regular and supplementary studies). As far
as their regular studies (done at
13
universities) are concerned, they usually completed them
at the University of Lviv
(61,0%),
Jagiellonian University
(11,7%)
and the University of Vienna
(5,2%).
Lviv historians had varied education; however, the dominant group were historians
in the strict sense
(31,1%),
philologists
-
historians of literature and language of different
specialisations
(26,4%)
and, to a lesser extent, lawyers
(14,2%).
The Lviv circle of historians was characterized by a high degree of professionaiisation,
but that was a long process. The PhD degree was obtained by
61,4%
of Lviv historians. At the
dawn of the Second Polish Republic, the degree of professionalism in terms of PhD degrees
had already reached
81,2%.
The largest number of doctorates were defended at the University
of Lviv
(54,1%),
the Jagiellonian University
(16,1%)
and the University of Vienna
(10,0%).
A similar process of ongoing professionaiisation of the Lviv circle of historians also concerned
habilitation,
which was obtained by
31,6%
of historians. The highest level of dynamic growth
in the number of
habilitations
took place during the Neoromanticism and Modernism periods
in historiography, i.e. the years
1900-1914,
as it concerned
12,5%
of the whole milieu under
present analysis. The Lviv historians obtained veniam
legendi
at
11
universities in
Galicia,
Austria, Germany, the largest number at the University of Lviv
(65,3%),
the Jagiellonian
University
(15,7%)
and the university of Vienna
(6,7%).
They obtained
habilitation
in
28
fields,
most of which were the legal and economic sciences (altogether
32,2%),
philological sciences
(23,2%)
and, only in the third place, history
sensu stricto
(17,4%).
Lviv historians
sensu stricto
and
sensu
largo made a major contribution to the activity of Lviv
historical and scientific institutions, institutions which popularised historical sciences as well
as educational and
socio-cultural
ones. At the same time they greatly contributed towards the
development of Polish and Ukrainian historiography in its methodological and research basis.
Historians
-
scholars accounted for
35%
of the Lviv historical circle. Their main area of
activity, among the five universities, was the University of Lviv, in particular the Faculty of
Philosophy. The Lviv historical school of the didactic type, created by Ksawery
Liske,
developed
research based on the method of critical analysis of sources. Seminars were created which
educated many future eminent scholars. In history
sensu stricto,
it is mainly Ksawery
Liske,
Szymon Askenazy, Ludwik
Finkel
i Mychajło
Hruszewski, who educated a great number of
399
students that developed their historiographical ideas and made a large contribution to Polish as
well as Ukrainian historiography. Their pupils became outstanding historians in Lviv but also
Krakow, Warsaw and
Poznan. New
university chairs for history were created and developed.
Specific feedback occurred concerning historians' work in libraries, archives, museums,
schools (especially high schools) and in the press. Historians served them and they served
historians. They constituted the management of seven Lviv research libraries (the most
important ones were the
Ossolineum
and the University Library), they explored, gathered
and published sources; on their basis they wrote studies, arranged collections, educated and
instructed the staif. It was similar in four archives (the main one was the National Archive of
Town and Land Records) and twelve museums (the main one was the Historical Museum of
Lviv), of which they were often founders.
As leaders of
20
scientific societies and ones popularizing science (with the Historical
Society as the most important one), Lviv historians elaborated and implemented the directions
of their development. By performing the leading role in most of these societies, they had
a decisive influence on the development of science, its organization and dissemination,
elevating the level of
socio-cultural
development of Lviv and
Galicia.
Those teachers who
published their works (representing the largest part, i.e.
36,8%
of the entire milieu under
research) made a major contribution to the development of junior high schools
(gimnazja)
in
Lviv. They contributed to the development of historical and pedagogical sciences. They gave
a solid foundation of knowledge to candidates for historical studies
(sensu stricto
and
sensu
largo),
i.e.
also to prospective scholars, many of whom were graduates of high schools in Lviv.
A huge impact on the historical circle in Lviv was exerted by the press in the broad sense,
of which historians were often initiators and creators. Historians created and developed the
press; as editors they shaped its content by cultivating historical sciences and popularising
national history. They also frequently published their papers in the press, which constituted
an important forum for the presentation of their scientific popularising achievements. The
main role was played by the historical journals (primarily
"Kwartalnik Historyczny"
-
"The
Historical Quarterly") and crypto-historical ones; an important role was also played by
socio¬
cultural
magazines and daily newspapers. They created scholarship, effectively influenced the
cultural development of the Polish and Ukrainian society in Eastern
Galicia,
stimulated their
interest in history and historical awareness.
Some historians developed their activity in several institutions simultaneously. Among
the Polish historians who were of greatest merit to Lviv and
Galicia
in terms of their academic
activity as well as activity related to archives, libraries, museums, scientific societies, education
and the press, one must mention such scholars as Ksawery
Liske,
Oswald Balzer,
Aleksander
Semkowicz,
Wilhelm Bruchnalski, Ludwik
Finkel,
Ludwik Kubala, Przemysław Dąbkowski,
Aleksander Czołowski, Władysław Łoziński, Antoni Małecki and Konstanty
Wojciechowski.
Among Ukrainian historians, the greatest contribution to the scientific, educational and
socio-cultural
development of Lviv and
Galicia
(especially for the Ukrainian population) was
made by:
Mychajło Hruszewski, Izydor Szaraniewicz, Antoni Petruszewicz
and
Aleksander
Barwiński.
Historians of the Lviv circle decisively influenced the shape and development of academic
institutions, the organization and popularization of science, the development of institutions
that created culture; they were the intellectual and cultural elite of the capital city of Lviv. They
greatly contributed to its scientific and
socio-cultural
development with its climax at the turn
of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Their activities in Lviv research, educational and
socio-cultural
institutions, which radiated to the whole of
Galicia
and beyond it, contributed to
400
the development of culture and education in the Polish and Ukrainian society in the Austrian
partition, also in other Polish territories and in Polish communities abroad.
The creative interests of Lviv historians were focused on
16
disciplines of history:
6
core ones,
4
specialized ones and
6
workshop ones. They published works primarily on the
history of Poland and Ukraine. The core areas were dealt with by
80,2%
of the Lviv circle, of
which the history of Poland: by
51,7%,
and the history of Ukraine: by
14,3%.
The specialized
disciplines were studied by
29,0%
while the workshop ones by
28,2%
of the entire milieu
under investigation. Within the area of history of Poland and Ukraine, in comparison with
Krakow and Warsaw historians, the Lviv ones had particularly great achievements in the field
of political medieval studies, recent political history (mainly the years
1795-1830),
history of
Polish and Ukrainian literature; they were dominant in the editing of historical sources and
bibliography. Lviv historians most often undertook subjects of a narrower scope, focussing
on the use of critical method in historiography, on being based on sources as well as on the
publishing and methodological elaboration of sources. Many more synthetic studies appeared
in the Krakow centre, which often met with criticism by Lviv historians due to theses being too
vague and research being poorly supported by sources.
Polish historians published mainly works on the history of the First Polish Republic and
Galicia,
but also on world history whereas Ukrainian historians dealt almost exclusively with the
history of the Russo-Ukrainian nation (including "borderline" topics). The prominent names
of Lviv historians and their major works, i.e. scholars but often also high-end amateurs and
non
-professional promoters, have found a permanent place in the history of historiography,
especially Polish and Ukrainian, but also Jewish and Austrian one. A figure invaluable for
Lviv and Polish historiography was
Ludwik
Finkel,
whose contributions were fundamental
to the development of history as a science. In addition to his enormous achievements in the
organization of historical sciences, he is of great merit in many historical disciplines in Poland:
modern political history, history of higher education, history of historiography, the teaching of
history, historical bibliography (fundamental merit), as well as world history. Outstanding Polish
historians
-
scholars also include names such as:
Tadeusz
Wojciechowski,
Wojciech Kętrzyński,
Antoni Małecki, Antoni Prochaska, Stanisław Zakrzewski, Fryderyk
Papée,
Ksawery
Liske,
Ludwik Kubala, Bronisław Dembiński, Szymon Askenazy, Władysław Łoziński, Aleksander
Czołowski, Oswald Balzer, Władysław Abraham,
Rev. Jan
Fijałek, Karol Hadaczek, Roman
Pilat,
Józef Kallenbach and Jan Bołoz-Antoniewicz.
Among the high-end amateur historians
and non-professional promoters, the largest contribution to the development of Lviv historical
culture was made by Bernard
Kalicki, Maurycy Dzieduszycki,
Julian
Kołaczkowski, Stanisław
Schnur-Pepłowski, Franciszek Jaworski,
Rev.
Stanisław Załęski,
Rev.
Norbert Golichowski,
Franciszek Rawita-Gawroński, Józef Białynia-Chołodecki
and the Polish-Ukrainian historian
Bohdan Janusz.
Among Ukrainian historians, the greatest contribution to the development
of historical research was made by:
Mychajło Hruszewski, Izydor Szaraniewicz,
Rev.
Antoni
Petruszewicz, Stefan Tomaszewski,
Emilian Ogonowski, Iwan Franko
and
Cyryl Studziński.
The major Jewish historians who published works on Polish history were:
Mojżesz
Schorr and
Majer
Balaban
while the main German one was
Henryk
Zeissberg. Often the research value
of the works by those historians has been irreplaceable to this day; hence their not infrequent
reissues and reprints.
World history was dealt with by
28,2%
of Lviv historians. In contrast to the history of
Poland and Ukraine, political history was of little interest to them. They mainly focussed on
history of literature
(24,8%),
history of the Church
(15,2%),
legal and constitutional history
(13,3%)
and political history
(9,5%).
Lviv historians dealt with world history only marginally
401
(except history of literature and law). In comparison with the period of Positivism, Lviv
historians studied world history more commonly during the Neoromanticism and Modernism
in historiography.
In the field of world history in the strict sense, all three leading historical circles: Krakow,
Lviv and Warsaw undertook research more seldom (except for history of law), slightly more
in specialized disciplines (mainly history of literature) and the least in workshop disciplines.
Especially in the domains of legal history and history of literature, all three centres created
works at the European level. The works of Lviv historians
-
specialists in world history, who
enjoyed international reputation, were often written in German, Latin and French (apart from
the Polish language). In comparison with the centres in Krakow and Warsaw, next to the large
achievements in world law and history of literature, especially classical, German and Roman,
substantial contribution was made by Lviv historians who specialised in general history of
the Church. This content-related category was primarily among the achievements of Polish
historians (to a lesser extent also Austrian ones) as Ukrainian historians did not deal with
world history on a larger scale. The Polish historians specialising in world history, who had
major achievements, included:
Bronisław Dembiński, Antoni
Prochaska, Adam
Szelągowski,
Jan Bołoz-Antoniewicz, Karol Hadaczek, Jan Rutkowski, Władysław Ochenkowski, Leon
Piniński, Edward Porębowicz, Wojciech Dzieduszycki and Ludwik Ćwikliński;
the Austrian
historians were:
Henryk
Zeissberg,
Ryszard
Werner and
Henryk
Brunner;
and among Jewish
ones:
Mojżesz
Schorr.
Lviv historians most often dealt with political history
(21,1%)
although, due to their
little creative interest in world history, its advantage over other areas was not large. Lviv
historians often also investigated history of literature
(16,7%),
history of science, culture and
education
(11,7%),
history of the Church
(9,2%),
socio-economic history
(7,7%),
and history
of historiography along with the methodology of history
(6,7%;
however, it was usually of
marginal interest).
Historical-bibliological sub-disciplines were the focus of
17,9%
of Lviv historians, but
that was rather cursory. The greatest achievements of both quantitative and qualitative nature
were held in the area of source editing
(42,4%
of the whole studied circle), but there were
also considerable achievements in historical bibliography and the history of books, libraries
and the press. The contribution of Lviv historians in the area of bibliological sciences, such as
source editing and historical bibliography, was fundamental for the development of historical
sciences (including the history of books, libraries and the press), extending the applicability of
the critical method. The development of research, especially in history of culture, science and
education and the auxiliary sciences of history, laid the foundation for the formation of the
methodological basis of historical-bibliological sciences, which has contributed to their large
progress. |
