THE BATTLE OF
OSTROŁĘKA

1831).
The November Uprising was the biggest Polish armed bid for independence in
the 19th century.
The Battle of
Ostrołęka,
26
May
1831,
became one of the biggest and most im¬
portant military clashes of the uprising. Its importance overshadowed the fight from

May. The debate on the battle began
de
facto the day after it took place. Indeed,
it was something to discuss. The military expeditions against the Russian Guard,
including the Battle of
Ostrołęka,
finished the period of unquestionable Polish ini¬
tiative. It was the beginning of an end of the armed bid for independence. The battle
was a failure. Fortunately, though, it was far from a total defeat. Learning about
the uprising is limited due to very few available sources, many of which are feature
articles. The loss of relevant archive materials forced historians to make use of vari¬
ous kinds of narrative sources. The ones created around the described date reflect
political battles of the day and, quite naturally, are full of personal bias. Thus it was
easy for historians to wreck on a reef during their research and quite a few of them
failed to steer clear of it. Despite the huge and still increasing amount of 180-year-
old literature touching upon the November Uprising, we still, apart from the work
of
Wacław Tokarz,
have not got a new synthesis of
1831
war.
All the three biggest battles, namely
Grochów,
Warsaw or
Ostrołęka
have been
described in various ways in terms of style and quality. The last aforementioned
battle thanks to the figure of Bern is present in the historical awareness of the Pol¬
ish society. The Battle of
Ostrołęka
became a turning point in
1831
war. So it was,
neither because of its strategic consequences nor because of its severe material losses.
In fact, the grandeur and significance of the defeat lay in moral sphere. Our high
command lost faith in themselves and no longer believed that other major undertak¬
ings could be successful.
The significance of the Battle of
Ostrołęka
was obvious to its contemporaries,
so it was natural for many heroes of the day to comment on those events.

Chronological ramifications of this work include the days of military expedi¬
tion that is between
12
and
29
May
1831,
starting from the onset of the operation
through the Battle of Rajgrod and ending with a comeback of the Polish Army to
Warsaw.
The Polish-Russian War had lasted since February. The success of Polish offen¬
sive along Brest Road discouraged the Russian Army from crossing the Vistula River
onto its left bank. Still though, it was divided into two military concentration areas:
the forces of Genaral Diebitsch in
Podlasie
region and the Russian Guard under the
command of the Grand Duke Michael near
Łomża
and
Zambrów.
The latter was
intended for a representative role rather than for combat, but it does not necessarily
mean that it was of little military value
-
just on the contrary. Polish commander-in-
chief Gen. Jan Skrzynecki tried to avoid a military clash with Gen. Diebitsch at all
costs. Eventually under a pervasive persuasion he complied with a modified plan of
a military expedition against the Russian Guards.
The expedition against the Guards was not a perfect plan of its author General
Ignacy Prądzyński.
It required the utmost precision, speed of action, energy and
sheer determination.
Unfortunately, not only commander-in-chief Jan Skrzynecki but also
Prądzyński
lacked the former and the latter. In fact, Polish General Staff worked
very badly. Initially, everything went well. Our main forces managed to slip past
Gen. Diebitsch and his troops and march up against the unprepared Russian Guard.
On
17
May it was taken by surprise, but still there was no decision to attack it. The
decision, which I find justified much against the claims in mainstream literature,
let the Guard move away. The pursuit, marked by a series of minor armed clashes,
let us drive it away across the borders of the Kingdom of Poland. Alarmed by the
present state of affairs, the Russian commander-in-chief brought a military support
to the Russian Guard and took the Polish forces by surprise at
Ostrołęka.
Relaxed disposition of the Polish army resulted from the presupposition that
Gen. Diebitsch marched towards the Russian Guard. Contrary to what was written
years later, by
Prądzyński
in particular, the Polish had but no information concern¬
ing the whereabouts of the Russian commander-in-chief. Moreover, by military or¬
ders the Polish Army was divided into three parts. First, Gen. Gielgud and his divi¬
sion were stationed in
Łomża.
Second, the
1st
and
3rd
part of an infantry division
occupied the right bank of the
Narew
River. Third,
Gen. Łubeński
and his corps
remained on the left bank. He had a quick fight and retreated onto the right bank
of the river. Unfortunately, both the poor orders of
Prądzyński
and chaos existing in
the Polish headquarters first led to the battle in wooden
Ostrołęka
and after con-

quering the bridges by the Russians to another battle on the right bank of the
Narew.
The dominating Russian artillery, which was protected by the river, kept firing at the
Polish troops with impunity while they were attempting to push the Russians away
from the bridgeway. These constant recurring attacks brought heavy losses. Yet in
the evening at about
7
p.m. there was the famous charge of lieutenant colonel
Bem.
Even though it was just a short episode in the battle that lasted from morning hours
(10
a.m.), it made a difference as Gen. Diebitsch could not feel victorious.
During the evening military conference of senior Polish officers there came the
decision of retreating to Warsaw. The division of Gen. Gielgud, cut off in nearby
Łomża,
was dispatched to Lithuania. It won the Battle of Rajgrod on its way there,
which made the public acknowledge the military expedition against the Russian
Guards in terms of success rather than failure. Unfortunately, in all these three de¬
cisive moments of the uprising, the Polish troops lacked the one corps which could
make the Poles the winning side of the conflict: near
Grochów
it was the missing
division of Krukowiecki, near
Ostrołęka
-
the division of Gielgud and in Warsaw
-
the Ramorino corps.
In fact, in each case there was either a failure of the high command or its ab¬
sence. The Polish army failed to win any of the above mentioned battles in terms of
tactics and the only battle considered to be victorious in terms of strategic and moral
success was the one at
Grochów.
When it comes to the losses, both sides suffered
comparable damage. The overall outcome, however, was to our disadvantage. Every
military clash brought an even greater death toll to Polish experienced troops, re¬
sulting in growing numbers of fresh recruits. The records of battalions, regiments,
brigades and divisions on paper did not look bad
-
it was a matter of poorer quality
of soldiers. The Battle of
Ostrołęka
of

1831
got imprinted in the historical
awareness of the Poles.
