The lifespan of
Karol
Sidor
was relatively short but so full of many-
sided activities that it can only inspire admiration and respect. He entered
the Slovak political scene as an 18-year-old high school student and from his
first appearance till his untimely death in
1953
he was almost continuously
in the thick of the political fight.
He was born in
Ružomberok
on 16th July
1901.
As a young man he
came under the powerful influence of
Andrej Hlinka,
who was at that time
the parish priest of
Ružomberok
and already acknowledged as a fearless and
charismatic leader of the Slovak people oppressed by Magyar rule.
At the end of World War I, Slovakia broke the suffocating link with
Hungary and became a part of the newly created Czecho-Slovak Republic.
In the atmosphere of jubilation and excitement generated by the newly
gained freedom,
Sidor
-
who was then in the final year of his high school
studies
-
entered the world of literary and journalistic pursuits. He became
the co-founder of the literary-cultural magazine
Vatra
(The Bonfire) and
began his journalistic career in the editorial office of the daily
Slovák,
the
official organ of the Slovak People s Party led by his idol
Andrej Hlinka.
The
journalistic work soon became his full-time occupation. In
1930
he became
editor-in-chief of the daily
Slovák,
which by this time had a reputation as one
of the most influential periodicals in Slovakia and a powerful weapon in the
struggle for Slovak autonomy.
In
1935
Sidor
was elected a deputy of the Czecho-Slovak Parliament in
Prague. Here his alertness, fiery speeches and searching questions made him
universally known as a tough and uncompromising fighter for Slovak autonomy.
The autonomy which the Czech political representatives solemnly
promised in the Pittsburgh Agreement in
1918,
was granted to the Slovaks in
October
1938
only after a long struggle and in the wake of the tragic Munich
events. Czecho-Slovakia now became a federated state and within this
framework Slovakia obtained its own parliament and its own government
led by Dr.
Jozef
Tiso.
Karol
Sidor
was made the deputy Prime Minister of the
central government in Prague. At the same time he assumed the leadership
of the paramilitary
Hlinka
Guards.

As an avowed autonomist,
Sidor
strove very hard to make autonomy
workable and mutually advantageous to both sides. It was not an easy task,
and it was made even more difficult by the intransigence of the Czech
bureaucracy on one hand, and by the growing radicalism of a group of
dissatisfied Slovaks on the other.
In February
1939
the Czech generals proposed a plan of undoing the
autonomy by a military coup. The plan was put into operation during
the night of 9th-10th March
1939.
Tiso s autonomous government was
dismissed and Czech military units occupied Slovak cities and towns.
The most vociferous activists were seized and deported to Czech prisons.
However, the Czechs could not find any trustworthy Slovak politician who
was willing to go along with their plan to subdue Slovakia by force. To make
the matters worse, their foolish and desperate action provided Hitler with
an opportunity to set into motion his plan for the liquidation of Czecho¬
slovakia. To get out of this mess of their own making, the Czech political
leaders turned to
Sidor
and asked him to save the situation by accepting the
premiership of Slovakia.
Ever afraid of Hitler s intentions,
Sidor
-
after some hesitation
-
agreed.
He concluded that, for the time being, it would be in the interest of Slovakia
to preserve the Czecho-Slovak state in its federated form. It was a decision
which found little understanding among the more radical circles of Slovak
politicians and not even among his followers.
With the approval of the Presidium of the
Hlinka
People s Party, he
assumed the premiership and tried his best to restore order and revive
mutual confidence within the strained Slovak-Czech relations.
In the meantime, the Germans
-
determined to liquidate Czecho-Slovakia
-
continued in their reckless pursuit. They expected that the Slovaks would
not need much prompting to separate from the Czechs. On 11th March
1939,
Hitler sent his special emissary
Wilhelm Keppler
to
Sidor
and urged
him to proclaim the separation of Slovakia from the Czech lands. But
Sidor
resolutely refused to assist Hitler in his effort to dismember Czecho-Slovakia,
arguing that it was not an apppropriate time and he was not authorized
to initiate such a far-reaching step. This refusal angered Hitler, who now
branded
Sidor
as a soldier of Prague and continued in his destructive plans
to liquidate the Czecho-Slovak state.
Slovakia eventually declared its independence on 14th March
1939.
In
the first Slovak government, headed by Sidor s rival Dr.
Jozef
Tiso,
Sidor
was
put in the charge of the Ministry of the Interior. However, he did not stay
there long and resigned after two days. He also resigned his position as the
commander-in-chief of the
Hlinka
Guards.

His anti-German sentiments, which now became widely known,
threatened to drive a wedge into Slovak-German relations. For a new state
under German protection, it was vital to keep these relations tidy and
neighbourly. The Germans continued to see in
Sidor
a potential rallying
point for dissidents and opponents of friendly and orderly Slovak-German
relations and they objected to his presence in Slovakia. In order to dissipate
German suspicions, the Slovak government asked
Sidor
to leave Slovakia
and take a diplomatic appointment at the Vatican as the Slovak Minister to
the Holy See.
Sidor
was most reluctant to accept this offer, which he rightly viewed as
an attempt to exclude him from domestic politics. But eventually he agreed
and in June
1939
he went to the Vatican where he served as a diplomatic
representative of the Slovak Republic for six years. In Rome he gradually
settled into his job. He found it not only new and interesting but also
challenging and demanding, especially after the outbreak of World War II.
After September
1939
he was repeatedly approached by dissident Slovak
politicians and diplomats to join them in forming an anti-Nazi Slovak group
in exile, which he firmly declined.
The British Consul-General in Bratislava, Peter Pares (who was recalled
from Slovakia in September
1939
and was later based in Budapest), wrote
these remarkable words about
Sidor
in his diplomatic despatch of 6th
January
1940:
The real political leader of the Slovaks is
Karol
Sidor.
He is a good
political orator and a good writer on national-political subjects; but his pre¬
eminence among the Slovak Catholic leaders is assumed not only by his
personality, but by the fact that he stood extremely close to Father
Hlinka
and is said to be his political heir. The demonstrations in his favour which
continue to occur from time to time
-
although they embarrass him and are
dangerous for his supporters
-
are the best proof of his great popularity. He
has remained loyal to the government, but is definitely dissatisfied with the
present German domination, which has forced him and his closest friends
to abandon temporarily their political activities. If a moment ever came
when it would be safe for Slovakia to abandon her policy of subservience
to Germany, it would be he who would assume the political leadership
rather than anybody else.... To the call of the Slovak emigre politicians his
Precise attitude appeared to be that he preferred the existing state of affairs,
but would accept a federal solution, if that was the policy adopted by the
Western Powers.

Sidor
knew that the Germany would lose the war but he was also
convinced that, after the war, the vtctonous Western Allies would not go

against the wishes of the Slovak nation by depriving it of independence. He
saw the future of Slovakia in a loose Polish-Slovak-Czech federation and was
continuously striving for this vision.
Unfortunately for the Slovaks, the Western Allies abandoned Central
Europe to the Russians, who dominated the region until
1989.
From mid
1945
Sidor
lived as a political exile, first in the Vatican and
then in Canada, where he settled in
1950.
He died in Montreal on 20th
October
1953.
After the war
Sidor
described his diplomatic activities in a book,

(Six Years at the Vatican,
Obrana
Press, Scranton, PA,
1947).
This book
-
in spite of its great historical value and its primacy (the first work
of its kind in Slovak literature)
-
was largely unknown in the author s native
country. Hence this new edition. The present publication is an annotated
version of the original text with some additional supplements (Sidor s
biography, a bibliography, two historical essays and new illustrations).
