(Summary)
................................... 267
Heliodor
Święcicki
(1854-1923)
Summary
q
/eliodor
Święcicki
lived throughout three different periods of Poland s history
-
J~L· under Prussian rule until the First World War broke out
(1854-1914),
when the
partitioning powers were falling apart as a result of their defeat in the war
(1914—
1918)
and, finally, during the rebirth of the sovereign Polish state
(1918-1923).
Alt¬
hough different contexts and events influenced his life during each of these periods,
Święcicki
remained faithful to the ideals he had developed in his youth, which were
working for the good of his homeland, being faithful to God, helping the poor and
disadvantaged, mastering the medical profession and supporting the development of
Polish science. The first and longest period in his life could be divided into several
stages. He spent his childhood and went to schools in his hometown of
Śrem.
Even
though he was born in
Poznań
on July
3, 1854,
ft was in
Śrem
that he was brought
up, educated, and cared for by his parents
-
his father,
Dr Tadeusz Święcicki,
who
was a physician, and his mother
Dorota,
née
Korytowska. He went to a public ele¬
mentary school and then graduated with honors in
1873
from the local high school,
which was then called a classical gymnasium . While attending the high school in
Śrem,
he belonged to the Philomath Club, which was a part of the
Tomasz Zan
Socie¬
ty [PL:
Towarzystwo Tomasza
Zana].
His happy days of youth ended with the trau¬
matic experiences of
1872-1873.
First, on February
23,1872,
his father died from an
anthrax infection, and then, ten months later, on November
5,
his mother died of
lung cancer. Next, on January
2, 1873,
his older sister
Ofelia,
who was barely
20
years old, committed suicide just two weeks after she had gotten married to a 41-
year-old German physician from Wroclaw,
Dr
Hermann
Eberhard
Fischer. Of Helio-
dor s many siblings, only two younger sisters remained
-
Jadwiga
and Wanda
-
who
were being taken care of by relatives and the
Karpiński
family, friends of the
Święcickis,
in
Śrem.
These events left a deep emotional mark on
Heliodor.
Lonely and filled with
pain, he started studying medicine at the University of Wroclaw on October
27, 1873,
thus following in his father s footsteps. Medical studies at that time in Germany last¬
ed four years. Among his teachers were professors such as:
С
Hasse, W.
Grosser,
~267~
H. Haeser,
R.
Heidenhain,
Α. Β.
Biermer, J. Cohnheim, E.
Fischer, and
О.
Spiegelberg,
who were leading European scientists in the field of physiology, anatomy, surgery
and gynecology. While at the university he became involved in experimental research
in the area of physiology. As a result, he wrote a paper entitled:
Untersuchung über
die
Bildung und Ausscheidung des Pepsins bei den Batrachiern
[EN: On the
For¬
mation
of
Pepsin in
Frogs] which, in
1876,
received a distinction in a competition for
student research papers at the Faculty of Medicine and was published in a prestig¬
ious, German scientific journal:
Pflügers Archiv
fixr
Physiologie.
He had also submit¬
ted a paper on the history of medicine and, more specifically, on the nursing of chil¬
dren and child illnesses in ancient times and the Early Middle Ages
[DE:
Zusammenstellung und Erläuterung der bei den griechischen Aertzten, namentlich
bei
Hippocrates,
Galen, Soranus und Oribasius sich findenden Angaben über die
Pflege der Kinder und ihre Krankenheiten].
A section of this paper, entitled
Historisch-kritische Beleuchtung der Pflege der Kinder bei den Griechen,
became
a starting point for a doctoral thesis which he defended on August
1,1877.
Having done compulsory internship at a hospital, he passed the state medical ex¬
amination in Dresden on June
20, 1878
and settled in
Poznań.
He took up further
studies and practice in the field of physiology as well as obstetrics and gynecology. In
the years
1878-1884
he went, on several occasions, to the academic centers in Berlin
(Prof. H.
Kronecker,
and then C. Schroeder and A. Gusserow), Leipzig (Prof.
С
Lud¬
wig,
and later K. S.
Credè),
Dresden
(Prof. F. Winckel), Erlangen (Prof.
P.
Zweifel)
and
Jena (Prof. B.S.
Schultze). The laboratory research he did at that time and the
abilities he gained in the area of gynecology and obstetrics became a springboard for
the development of his career as a researcher and physician, which was reflected in
scientific publications and innovative medical procedures. On top of Swiecicki s
achievements were research studies dealing with the prevention of infections related
to the perinatal period, the causes and ways of limiting obstetrical hemorrhage, the
etiology of and ways of treating
postpartum
infection, as well as the use of laparoto-
my in treating a uterine rupture. He was undoubtedly a pioneer on Polish lands in
terms of carrying out a total hysterectomy, Cesarean section and using aristol (the
product s brand name) to treat inflammation of a woman s reproductive organs as
well as to sterilize the surgical field. Aristol, the way it was used by
Święcicki
from
1889,
turned out to be an effective antiseptic and gave rise to rational chemotherapy
in the area of gynecology in Poland. As a physician,
Święcicki
was innovative in that
he introduced new obstetric tools and other medical equipment, and he also modi¬
fied the existing ones. For example, in
1888
he constructed a portable apparatus for
inhalation anesthesia with a mixture of compressed nitrous oxide and oxygen which
was used at the turn of the 20th century on the territory of Germany and Great Brit¬
ain. His achievements in medicine were even appreciated by the authorities of the
partitioning powers, which appointed him Professor of Medicine in
1913.
Heliodor
Święcicki
also deserves credit for his contribution to the development
of Polish science, especially on the territories of the Prussian partition. Immediately
after he came to
Poznań
in
1878,
he became an active member of the
Poznań
Society
of Science Enthusiasts [PL:
Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Nauk w Poznaniu, TPNP].
During the
44
years of his activity in this Society, he held different functions: from
~
268
~
a librarian,
to
the chair of the Faculty of Medicine
(1896-1904)
and, finally, the Soci¬
ety s chairman in the years
1915-1923.
Editing scientific journals was a very im¬
portant area of his activity. In the years
1888-1903
he was the editor of
Roczniki
TPNP [EN: the Annals of the
Poznań
Society of Science Enthusiasts], and in
1888
he initiated the publishing of the
Nowiny Lekarskie
[EN: Medical News] magazine,
which became a leading Polish medical journal under his editorship
(1896-1897,
1899-1906).
Swiecicki s high professional and scientific competences as well as the
respect that the whole medical world on Polish lands had for him were reflected in
the fact that his candidacy for chair of the Faculty of Gynecology was proposed three
times: in
1894
and
1907
at the Jagiellonian University and in
1898
at the Faculty of
Medicine of the Lviv University. For his contribution to science, he received the
honoris causa degree from the Jagiellonian University in
Kraków
in
1900.
Undoubtedly, as far as
Heliodor Swiecicki s
personal life is concerned, the years
1886-1901,
that is when he was married to Helena
Dąmbska,
were the happiest in
his life. He loved her in a very special way and he expressed his feelings in an original
manner, for example, in prayer. This should not, however, come as a surprise given
his interests in both Polish and foreign literature as well as in philosophy, ethics, and
esthetics, which were manifested in his appreciation for the beauty and precision of
the Polish language, both written and spoken, as well as in his essays which were
published in
Poznań
periodical magazines. His interests in the humanities were also
reflected in his philosophical and ethical deliberations in the area of the medical
profession, which he presented in the form of an original philosophical concept of
medicine at the 11th Meeting of Polish Physicians and Naturalists [PL:
Zjazd Lekarzy
i Przyrodników Polskich]
in
Kraków
in
1911
by giving a speech entitled
O estetyce
w medycynie
[EN: On
Esthetics in Medicine] in front of an audience consisting of
the greatest contemporary Polish scientists.
Heliodor
Święcicki
tried to live and work according to his principles and values.
After his wife died, he mostly devoted himself to charity work for the poor
-
he pre¬
sided over the Higher Council of St. Vincent
de Paul
Men s Society in
Poznań
[PL:
Rada Wyższa Męskiego Towarzystwa św. Wincentego
à
Paulo
w Poznaniu]
in the
years
1907-1909;
however, he had already been involved in the medical and material
care of the poor before. In
Poznań
he was also famous for his philanthropic activity
carried out under the
Karol Marcinkowski
Academic Support Society [PL:
Towa¬
rzystwo Pomocy Naukowej im. Karola
Marcinkowskìego]
to support pupils and
students (in
1890-1913
he was head of the
Poznań
committee). Moreover, he was
known for the help he brought to the widows and orphans of Polish physicians as
part of the Peer Support Society [PL:
Towarzystwo Pomocy Koleżeńskiej].
In
1919
Heliodor
Święcicki
definitely turned out to be the man of the moment
as far as coming up with the idea of establishing
Poznań
University was concerned.
Not only was a group of scientists, who were enthusiastic about the idea and who
mostly came from the
Poznań
Society of Science Enthusiasts, centered around him,
but he also won the approval for this project from politicians of the
Wielkopolska
region. Those politicians unanimously supported the idea of establishing a university
even though an uprising was in progress. Despite the huge organizational and finan¬
cial limitations,
Święcicki
managed to turn his vision of building a modern,
multi-
~269~
faculty university into reality. He was elected Rector of
Poznań
University six times
in the years
1919-1923
and, during such a short period, he succeeded in building
a higher education facility almost entirely from scratch which had the highest aca¬
demic standards in many fields of knowledge. This success might have been connect¬
ed with the large-scale campaign which
Święcicki
carried out as part of the activities
of the Stabilization Commission [PL:
Komisja Stabilizacyjna]
in
Kraków
as well as in
Polish nationwide press to promote new opportunities for science in
Poznań.
As
a consequence, he attracted many scientists to the capital city of the
Wielkopolska
region. Among them were many young learned men who had a somewhat rebellious
attitude towards the conservative atmosphere that surrounded the academic circles
in
Kraków,
Lviv or Warsaw (e.g. K. Tymieniecki, E. Piasecki, S.T.
Dąbrowski, Jan
Rutkowski, S. Pawlowski), as well as researchers who already had many accom¬
plishments abroad (e.g. F. Znaniecki, K. Hrynakowski). As a result, from the very
beginning of
Poznań
University s existence, scientific research was conducted in an
innovative way, which sometimes led to developing areas of study which were com¬
pletely new to Polish science, such as physical culture. Apart from
Poznań,
such de¬
partments had only existed in Copenhagen (from
1908)
and Ghent (from
1909).
There is no doubt that founding
Poznań
University was the crowning work of
He¬
liodor
Swiecicki s life. From a historical point of view, his previous scientific and
organizational achievements somehow form a logical whole
-
they were all steps
towards his implementing the bold idea of establishing a higher education facility in
Poznań.
The functions he carried out during the period of the partitions of Poland, in
particular when he belonged to the
Poznań
Society of Science Enthusiasts, not only
extended his knowledge and managerial skills (as we would call them now), but they
also sharpened his intuition concerning the choice of coworkers. If it had not been
for the group of people who were the first members of the so-called University Com¬
mission [PL:
Komisja Uniwersytecka]
in late
1918,
that is the founding fathers
who had come from the
Poznań
Society of Science Enthusiasts, namely Professors:
Józef Kostrzewski, Michał Sobeski
and Rev.
Stanisław Kozierowski,
Swiecicki s ef¬
forts to found a university in
Poznań
would not have been so successful. Also, the
support that he got from politicians in the
Wielkopolska
region was important,
namely, first from those who belonged to the Supreme People s Council [PL:
Naczelna Rada Ludowa]
and then from the members of the Ministry of the Former
Prussian Partition [PL:
Ministerstwo b. Dzielnicy Pruskiej]. Święcicki
infected them
with his enthusiasm for the idea of establishing a university in
Poznań.
The good
relations he had with the majority of contemporary politicians in
Poznań
made it
easier to obtain magnificent buildings as well as the necessary funds for
Poznań
Uni¬
versity. While inaugurating the first academic year, on May
7, 1919,
Heliodor
Święcicki
did not hide his satisfaction with the fact that
Poznań
University had been
established. He thought that this success should be attributed to the good will and
efforts of the government as well as to the benevolence of the society . When de¬
scribing
Poznań
University s goals, he said that educating and raising the then young
Polish generation was of utmost importance.
The fact that a higher education facility was established in
Poznań
was of high
social and cultural significance. From the moment that it was created,
Poznań Uni-
~
270
~
versity increased the pace of the city s social life and, in particular, it promoted the
re-polonization of the Western borderlands. The founding of
Poznan
University was
also a political event. It should be remembered that, at the same time, a fierce, dip¬
lomatic struggle was in full progress in Paris for ownership of the
Wielkopolska
and
Pomerania
regions, whereas the fate of the young Polish state was up in the air due to
the Bolshevik invasion of Poland in
1920.
Heliodor
Święcicki
devoted all of his skill
and energy to developing the University. Until
1923
four faculties had been estab¬
lished, namely the Faculty of Philosophy, of Law and Economics, of Agriculture and
Forestry and, finally, of Medicine, at which he was professor. Numerous departments
and institutes were established within the faculties and their research activities were
supported by the University Library, which was set up in
1919.
Święcicki
in particular
supported the students. He took the Office of education for the care of
Poznań
Uni¬
versity students [PL:
Kuratorium opieki nad młodzieżą akademicką Uniwersytetu
Poznańskiego]
under his wing, as well as numerous student organizations which he
sometimes subsidized with his own funds.
The University s dynamic development under Rector Swiecicki s direction re¬
ceived wide recognition. The first doctor honoris causa degrees that were awarded
to, for example: Maria
Curie-Skłodowska
(1922),
Ferdinand
Foch,
the Marshal of
France
(1923)
and Roman Dmowski, a politician
(1923),
strengthened the Universi¬
ty s standing.
Despite intensive efforts, the First Rector did not manage to set up a Faculty of
Theology. Also, initial problems connected with establishing the Faculty of Medicine
must have influenced not only his well-being, but also his health. During the last
months of his life he was worried about the University s financial condition and that
the economic crisis which had afflicted the young Polish state could hinder the Uni¬
versity s further growth. In such circumstances it becomes clear why, in
1923,
he
donated his entire property to the Learning and Work Foundation [PL:
Fundacja
Nauka i Praca *],
which was intended to support Polish science and the academic
community. He justified his decision of bequeathing his whole estate to the Universi¬
ty community in his last will and testament by saying that it was because he loved
the Polish soul though it has been infested with wild weed . He also added, I adore
its spring and its flame. I believe in its power, in its victory... .
Heliodor
Święcicki
died on October
12, 1923
at the age of
69.
The funeral was
held on October
14
and was accompanied by the presence of the academic communi¬
ty and Poznan s inhabitants. According to the press, several hundred thousand peo¬
ple paid homage to the late
Święcicki
in the University Hall from the early morning
hours. The funeral procession, which was attended by his family, representatives of
the clergy and the authorities, as well as professors and students, followed behind the
late Rector s coffin to the cemetery of St. Mary Magdalene parish, on Bukowska
Street. After the Second World War, on November
14, 1946,
Heliodor Swiecicki s
remains were solemnly transferred to the Graves of Distinguished People [PL:
Groby
Zasłużonych]
in the vaults of St. Adalbert church in
Poznań
upon the initiative of
Poznań
University s authorities.
Heliodor
Swiecicki s contemporaries were aware of his role in and contribution
to the development of the medical community and the revival of higher education in
-271
~
Poznań.
He had also been recognized for his achievements in various ways before, for
example, he had been granted an honorary doctorate from the Jagiellonian Universi¬
ty and had become an honorary member of different medical societies such as: the
Supreme Medical Council of Physicians of the Polish State [PL:
Naczelna
Rada
Lekarska Państwa Polskiego]
and the Society of Polish Physicians and Naturalists in
Petersburg [PL:
Towarzystwo Lekarzy i Przyrodników Polskich w Petersburgu], as
well as a correspondence member of the Society of Czech Physicians in Prague. He
was also awarded many distinctions, of which the Order of
Polonia Restituta
and the
Order of the Legion of Honor, awarded to him on August l,
1922
by the President of
the French Republic, were the most important for him. Also, his own
Poznań
Univer¬
sity recognized his merits. While summing up the former academic year of
1923-
1924
at the inauguration of the new year, his successor as rector, Prof.
Zygmunt
Lisowski,
said: When, early in the morning, it became known to us that
Heliodor
Święcicki
had died, we understood that it was something more than only the fact that
one of the university professors had passed away. We realized that the University had
forever lost its spiritual leader, who, as its founder, had shown us its development
paths, whereas society had lost one of its most luminous figures, one that was totally
devoted to serving his nation and ideals . In the following years people tried to com¬
memorate the First Rector, for example, by publishing occasional memoirs in medi¬
cal journals or in a more permanent form, for example, in sculpture or painting.
Obviously, the Learning and Work Foundation best honored the memory of the
First Rector by taking on the name of its founder.
After the Second World War, under the new political conditions, the role of the
First Rector was not much promoted among students. Nevertheless, the medical
community, which in
1950,
due to organizational changes in higher education, began
to function as a separate educational institution, namely the Academy of Medical
Sciences, paid special homage to
Heliodor
Święcicki.
Also, Adam
Mickiewicz
Univer¬
sity took various initiatives to commemorate its First Rector.
Heliodor
Święcicki
was
especially remembered on the occasion of round anniversaries of the University s
founding. The most spectacular commemorative event was the unveiling of an instal¬
lation in the form of a bench, on which any passer-by can sit, with a sculpture of the
First Rector in front of the Collegium Minus on May
8, 2010.
The aim of this book is to present the life and work of
Heliodor
Święcicki,
with
special focus on those points in his biography that led to the establishment of the
multi-faculty
Poznań
University. The book is arranged in chronological and thematic
order and it includes, apart from an introduction and timeline, four chapters that
present the most important areas and stages of the rector s life.
The book is mostly based on sources from archives. Among the materials that
were used, the documents stored in the Archives of the Polish Academy of Sciences
[PL:
Polska Akademia Nauk]
in
Poznań
are especially noteworthy. Several valuable
mementos belonging to the First Rector, which are kept there, are of special im¬
portance. These are, for example, a rector s mortar board, stethoscope or a collection
of medallions and family photographs. Moreover, the Archives of the Polish Academy
of Sciences in
Poznań
also hold a collection of several hundred sources documenting
Swiecicki s conceptual, didactic and organizational activity. These materials are par-
~
272
~
ticularly
valuable because the notes and letters that were handwritten by the First
Rector stand as a testimony to his thoughts and analyses from the years
1894-1923.
The other areas of
Heliodor Swiecicki s
activity were reconstructed on the basis of
source materials stored in: the
Raczyński
Library in
Poznan,
the State Archives in
Poznan
[PL:
Archiwum Państwowe w Poznaniu]
and the Archives of the Adam
Mic¬
kiewicz
University. Supplementary materials were obtained as a result of archival
and library research carried out in the Archives of the University of Wroclaw, the
Archdiocesan Archive in
Poznań,
among special collections of the
Poznań
Society of
Science Enthusiasts, the
Kórnik
Library, the Central Archives of Modern Records in
Warsaw, the National Library in Warsaw, and the Polish Library in Paris.
Apart from the archival materials, printed documents constitute the other group
of basic sources that present
Heliodor Swiecicki s
life and work. Among them are: the
First Rector s articles and publications, memoirs written by his close friends and
relatives as well as diaries kept by people who knew the realities of contemporary
Poznań.
This category also encompasses reports from the organizations
Święcicki
worked for and press releases that presented and commented on Swiecicki s activities
from a public opinion perspective.
In general, the book s author tries to answer several key questions related to the
founding of
Poznań
University, such as: What was Swiecicki s vision of a higher edu¬
cation facility and how did he implement it? How did he manage to gather so many
scientists and how did he win the approval of the community of politicians in the
Wielkopolska
region for that project? And, finally, how did he manage to build
a modern university in the years
1918-1923
despite enormous organizational and
financial obstacles?
