adam_text | SUMMARY
The image of the United States and Russia in the Polish
weeklies
The purpose of the Ph.D. thesis is to analyze publications regarding the United
States and Russia in three Polish weeklies:
Polityka , Wprost
and Newsweek
Polska .
1
am going to analyze the period of
1991-1995
and
2001-2004.
My
choice of titles is intentional: these are three leading weekly news magazines
with the largest circulation in Poland. News magazines are great sources of up
to-date information. They cover all current events, national and international
news, political and social leaders, business, movies, books and more with well-
researched, incisive writing. In general, the image of another country is very
important to people who create Polish foreign policy. News weeklies help to
understand the mentality and character of a foreign country, they show what it
is like and what it represents.
The opinion magazines, unlike television or radio, enable a deeper analytical
perception. As a result, newspaper articles shape a line of thought in referen¬
ce to the abovementioned two countries, the United States and Russia, in the
Polish society. Polish press studies still lack a comprehensive study concerning
the image of the United States and Russia, but simultaneously the number of
publications devoted to those countries indicate that they play a key role in
world politics in the eyes of our journalists. In media effects research,- relatively
little attention has been paid to how news is framed, and even less has been written
on the political consequences of news media.
Briefly speaking, at the
beginnig
of the 1990 s it was the Russian subject
matter that predominated on the foreign desks of Polish newspapers, which
was connected with Poland s strong political and economic dependence on the
Soviet Union. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Polish press turned
its attention to the West, and Polish correspondences from the US started to
appear more frequently. In the paper, I put forward a hypothesis that the press
images of the United States and Russia are simplified and schematic (good
image of the US, bad image of Russia). On the other hand, foreign correspon¬
dents who work in Poland say that the international desk in the Polish press
stands on a high level in comparison with, for example, American press.
My Ph.D. dissertation presents a content analysis of three leading weekly
magazines, in order to examine how Polish press reported on Russia and Ame¬
rica. The key question posed in the paper is about the way Polish press com-

municates
international
news and about the consequences of this message. The
content analysis reveals what issues and themes are considered newsworthy by
the press.
The questions I am going to answer in my Ph.D. thesis are:
—
What are the ways in which major stories and international news are re¬
ported?
—
How have the political changes and restructuring of national and inter¬
national media systems affected the reporting of foreign news?
—
Which patterns of international news have remained stable and which
have changed?
—
What was the number of magazine stories and what were the topics of
these stories (quality analysis)?
—
How do Polish journalists select, structure and prioritise news about in¬
ternational affairs?
—
What are the political consequences of the news media?
—
What impressions does an average Polish reader have while reading the
articles? Does he or she develop a positive, negative or neutral opinion
about Russia and the United States?
News magazines have changed in recent years and so have the themes of
news stories. The number of pages devoted to international affairs has incre¬
ased significantly after the collapse of the Soviet Union in
1991.
The coverage
of economic stories regarding the US and Russia has remained fairly low, while
the coverage of international political events has increased sharply in recent
years. Even though all the magazines belong to the same branch of the press,
data indicates that they differ from one another and only in some ways might
they be analogous.
Russia and America in the eyes of
Wprost , Polityka
and Newsweek
Polska
It would be a mistake to assume that media are objective and neutral. Dif¬
ferences in perspective emerge, sometimes slight or sharp, matching up the
ideology of each news magazine. To get a sense of how newsmagazine jour¬
nalism has changed,
1
looked at the content of the three weeklies. It is gene¬
rally recognized that images which national groups have of one another are
unrealistic. Nevertheless, they are accepted at least partially and form the basis
The term image , although a semantically difficult one, has gained a solid meaning and is basically
lymous with „stereotype , „generalized picture , etc. It is a composite of impressions, opinions
synonymous

of opinions and attitudes and, more importantly, affect international relations.
Also, it is clear that magazines run stories which they believe to be important
issues by paying attention to some problems and ignoring or paying minimal
attention to others,
і
looked deeper at every aspect of the reporter s craft: gat¬
hering information; conducting interviews; framing stories; and working with
editors and photographers.
The final stage of the thesis tries to answer the question about the conse¬
quences of newsmaking and what people (readers) actually learn from news
stories. The content analysis consists of the following categories of items rela¬
ted to the US and Russia:
—
hard news, features, soft news,
—
opinion articles, profiles.
News stories are basically divided into two types: soft news and hard news.
Hard news refers to up-to-the-minute news which are reported immediately
and affect many people; the primary job of the media is to report them as
they happen. Soft hews is background information, human interest or enter¬
tainment. Features contain an element of news but their main function is to
entertain or educate.
Length of the stories
—
An in-depth study showed that the three magazines had a similar overall
space or news hole.
—
Tn all the magazines short stories dominated, half of them being less
than
500
words.
—
The place of the article in a newspaper is a measure of its importance
(front page vs. last page).
Sourcing of the image
—
There arc some differences between the magazines in sourcing.
—
There are three categories of articles: those written by the editorial staff,
those written by editors, those written by outside contributors and those
bought from one of the three world news agencies

cv, Associated Press, Interfax, ITARR-TASS.

CONCLUSIONS
(by setting the three papers against each other in a sustained
comparison)
—
Short information about the US or Russia as reported in the three
maga
zincs was predominantly neutral but when it came to Russia negative
aspects were emphasized more frequently than positive ones.
—
Newsweek is a lighter magazine, more oriented toward lifestyle and
ce
lebrity coverage, more likely to pubHsh stories that contain an emotional
component.
—
In
„Wprost ,
rather than lifestyle, the second most common cover topics
were domestic social issues or historical matters (like
Katyń
or Russian/
American economy).
—
Articles on Russia and the US appeared in almost every issue of
Wprost
or Newsweek , in the columns called The World , Dossier or Profile .
—
A noticeable tendency in the three weeklies, especially at the beginning
of the 1990 s, was to view Russia in imperial categories.
—
Geographically, the articles devoted to Russia were usually concerned
with Moscow and Petersburg, but also with Kaliningrad, for military
and economic reasons. There is a visible line between E.urope and Russia
(the line is called the East ).
—
Newsweek uses simplified language in opposition to
Polityka,
be¬
cause it tries to gain the favor of young readers.
—
Newsweek is mostly a social magazine, it touches more upon social
themes and events, forecasting rather than analyzing the previous week s
events.
Wprost
and
Polityka
write first of all about politics and eco¬
nomy.
—
Newsweek has become the least conservative or serious, while
Polity¬
ka
locates itself at the other end of the spectrum, with
Wprost
lying
in between.
—
Polityka
is the most information-laden, the most likely to highlight
traditional hard news topics and to report in a neutral manner.
—
As for photos: an important part of articles arc photos with captions,
■which are primarily subject to visual perception and are basically suppo¬
sed to characterize the content of the article in a balanced way.
„Wprost
seems to be the most sensational, while
Polityka
seems to be the most
traditional of the newspapers.
—
The three magazines supplemented information provided in the periods
analyzed; they developed a niche by summarizing news and created a uni¬
que interpretative style of reporting.
