Coserían Integral
Linguistics. Theory,
Applications
and
Interviews
The most of the studies included in this volume were written in the last five
years, although we have shown great interest in Coseriu s linguistic theory for
more than ten years. They are either papers presented at various scientific events
or articles published in journals. Apart from these, there are also included some
interviews we took to some of Coseriu (direct and indirect) disciples. They all
illustrate the same effort to restore and turn to good account, in a unitary and
coherent approach, the scientific thinking of the Romanian scholar, starting from
the idea that his linguistics offers the best method of analysis of some difficult
language aspects.
A. The first part,
Coserían
Theory and Exegesis, includes five studies that
refer to either the ability of integral linguistics to ensure the epistcmological
frame of reference with a view to efficiently studying various language aspects
or the way in which certain linguistic issues are dealt with by Coseriu in his
work, as a whole: either mother tongue or foreign language learning, the nature
and typology of signification, terminology in general and linguistic terminology
in particular, repeated discourse and the collage technique (including the history
of all these concepts):

second
part, the lengthiest,
Applications of
Coserían
Linguistics,
includes fifteen applications of Coseriu s ideas. If one considers E. Coseriu s
famous tripartite distinction, referring to language levels {universal, historical
and individual), s/lie will observe that some contributions touch upon all three
levels (the studies on synonyms, neologisms, stylistic virtues of the
journalistic text, for instance), only the historical level (the issue concerning the
name of the language in the Republic of Moldova, synonymisative variation in
the case of phraseological units, for example) or mainly the individual level (in
studies of text linguistics: proper names in literature, poetry and prose
translations, the use of repeated discourse, etc.):

It is true that most of these applications refer to stylistics, with a special
reference to aspects linked to phraseology/repeated discourse, which may lead to
the conclusion that integral linguistics can be best applied to these aspects. In
fact, as we have already stated in the preliminary note of this volume, these
applications are only a part of the articles we have written so far or of those
about to be produced. A second volume will include research on terminology,
lexicology and grammar, as well as linguistic correctness in which Coseriu s
ideas on linguistic skeology (which studies the contribution of knowledge of
things to speech) and also his concepts

The third section, Interviews about
Cosería
and His Linguistics,
includes five dialogues I had with five persons who master Coseriu s linguistics,
all professors and researchers; some of them are even Coseriu s direct disciples.
The aim of these interviews was to better outline the personality of the scholar
from
Tübingen
(as well as his profoundly humane nature) and mark his most
important ideas, the places where their application is necessary and further
aspects that should be developed in this ample programme entitled integral
linguistics:

The last article of this book, When Coseriu is (seems to be) wrong (instead
of Afterword or Pseudo-Critical Pages), aims at drawing attention, through the
use of examples, at the danger of considering some theoretical aspects of
Coseriu s linguistics as being wrong. In many cases, the so-called mistakes are
not in fact errors made by Coseriu in theory, but misunderstandings or
misinterpretations made by the ones who criticized the great linguist s ideas with
no real reason. What is more, we think it appropriate that

in the case of
mistakes

one has to differentiate between mistakes like memory blanks (lapsus
memoriae) and mistakes in theory. Those from the second categoiy

the only
ones which should really matter

are rarely found at Coseriu, given his
impeccable logic and his amazing thirst for information/knowledge.
