1850.
Ze

objektů koksařské kolonie Terezie, postavené v letech
1907
a
1911,
dosud stojí
4
domy, v úplnosti je dochováno
10
budov Nové kolonie dolu Terezie (postavena v roce
1909),
zatímco obytné objekty v areálu dolu Vizina a další domy na Hladnově byly bez výjimky demolovány. Koksařskou kolonii
obývalo v roce
1921 463
osob
(2,0 %
obyvatel Slezské Ostravy), celkově však na Hladnově v obytných objektech Wilcz-
kova a Vítkovického horního a hutního těžířstva žilo více než
1280
obyvatel
(5,6 %
obyvatel Slezské Ostravy). Původně
heřmanická, dnes siezskoostravská Nová kolonie byla obývána
476
obyvateli
(14,8 %
obyvatel
Hermanie).
Vedle husté
sítě živnostenských provozoven měli Hladnovští
k
dispozici i mateřské a obecné školy, jazykově české i německé, a řadu
spolkových organizací odborových, tělovýchovných a světonázorových. Z významných osobností byli
s Hladnovem
spjati
důlní inženýr Ernst Lipansky a nacisty umučený pedagog Alois Cependa.
První poválečnou slezskoostravskou dělnickou kolonií byla kolonie Zita,
resp. od
roku
1921
kolonie Bunčák, jejíchž
21
domů pro zaměstnance dolů Ema, Michálka a Terezie, koksovny Terezie a Ředitelství Kamenouhelných dolů a koksov¬

bylo vybudováno v letech
1913-1922
a na počátku čtyřicátých a padesátých let
20.
století po demolici
několika budov, poškozených končící válkou. Občanská vybavenost kolonie, z jejíž zástavby z let
1913-1922
Wilczka
ve Slezské Ostravě a Horního ředitelství Kamenouhelných
dolů a koksovny Jana
Wilczka.
zakončit třísvazkovou ediční řadu publikací o dělnických koloniích Vítkovických železáren a dalších průmyslových závodů
(vydání plánováno v roce
2014)
se tak autorskému kolektivu stává závazkem.
Summary
Mgr.
Christopher Hopkinson, Ph.D.
In
2011,
the first of the three volumes in the series Workers HousingSchemes in Ostrava acknowledged the immense im¬
portance of these housing schemes (known in Central Europe as colonies , and referred to as such in the remainder of this
text), which built for workers at the local coal mines and coking plants in the Moravian part of Ostrava; these colonies
represented a distinctive type of settlement populated by communities with a high level of social mobility. In the Moravian
part of the city, on the left bank of the
Ostravice
River, the importance of the original miners colonies began to wane
after the First World War, as they gradually ceased to play a major role in the urban fabric and population structure of the
community. However, in the right-bank Silesian districts of Ostrava the colonies remained an important phenomenon up
until the mid-20th century, retaining their social significance and continuing to be an integral part of the urban landscape.
The importance of these housing schemes is evident from census data collected on
16
February
1921,
which showed at
least
23 674
people living in the workers colonies
(42.6 %
of the population of the municipalities of
Heřmanice, Hrušov,
Koblov,
Kunčičky, Michálkovice, Petřkovice, Radvanice and Slezská
Ostrava). Moreover, the above-mentioned districts
still have approximately
550
buildings which used to form part of housing schemes built by local mines and coking plants
for their labourers or clerical staff. The largest housing stock in colony-type developments belonged to the Ferdinand
Northern Railway Coal Mining Company
(605
buildings), the
Vítkovice
Coal Mining Company
(257
buildings), the Coal
Mining and Metallurgical Company
(205
buildings), the Coal Mine s and Cocing Plant of
Jan Wilczek
in Silesian Ostrava
(182
buildings) and the
Zvěřina
Coal Mining Company
(46
buildings). Cultural and social life in the colonies was rich and
diverse, as witnessed by the multitude of famous people who were born and grew up there, many of whom transcended re-
725
gional
boundaries to achieve national and international success in their respective fields. From the end of the 19th century
to the mid-20th century the colonies were also home to almost a hundred clubs and associations
-
professional, educa¬
tional and political/ideological associations, sports clubs and physical education associations.
Although in the 19th century the township of
Hrušov
(today almost entirely depopulated) had only three coal mines
-
known as Albert, Hubert and Ida
-
the collieries housing stock was also located in the neighbouring communities of
Heřmanice, Muglinov
and
Vrbice
(of which the latter lies outside the boundaries of today s City of Ostrava). The oldest
of the colonies
-
belonging to the Hubert Colliery
-
was built in
Hrušov
from
1871
onwards; originally consisting of
81
buildings
(1944),
only
5
buildings have survived. The colony had good civic amenities (an inn and a general store) and
a vibrant social life (the DTJ [Workers Physical Education Association] sports club,
a Sokol
athletics association, and
trade union organizations); it was also the birthplace or home of several important figures (including the paleo-botanist
František Němejc,
the ice hockey player
Ladislav Staněk,
the violinist
Lubomír Kostečky,
and the actor
Karel
Fiala). In
1921
it was home to
1363
people (making up
17.6 %
of the population of
Hrušov).
Work on the colony belonging to
the Ida Colliery began no later than
1873;
the colony originally had
57
residential buildings
(1944),
of which
36
have
survived. In February
1921
this colony was home to
558
people
(7.2 %
of the population of
Hrušov),
who were served by
several stores, a nursery school and an inn. The inhabitants of the Ida colony included two important mining engineers,
Konrád Žalman
and
Eduard Šebela.
In addition to the Hubert and Ida colonies, some employees at the two mines also
lived in company apartments at the
Mexiko
colony in Muglinov (where construction began some time before
1873)
and
at the Hubert colony in
Vrbice
(1909-1913).
The latter consisted of
9
buildings near the Hubert Colliery s ventilation
shaft in
Vrbice;
and by
1930
it was home to
341
people
(22.1 %
of the population of
Vrbice).
It has since been demolished
in its entirety. However, in Muglinov a total of
7
buildings from the
Mexiko
colony survive to this day; in
1921
this colony
had
223
inhabitants
(8.3 %
of the population of Muglinov). The colony in
Vrbice
had minimal civic amenities; the
Mexiko
colony had a restaurant of the same name, a nursery school, and several general stores.
The district of Koblov had only two workers colonies. These were the
Anselm
II
colony
(1881-1922),
consisting of
8
buildings which are still standing today
(142
inhabitants in
1921)
and the
Amerika
colony
(1922),
with
22
buildings
(200
inhabitants in
1937).
In
1921
the
Anselm
II colony was home to just
9.4 %
of Koblov s population, but by
1937
the
number of inhabitants at the
Anselm
II and
Amerika
colonies had approximately doubled (to make up
20.4 %
of the mu¬
nicipality s population). Although the colonies of Koblov grew in size during the mid^Oth century, civic amenities and
social life remained concentrated in the rural community of Koblov village itself, rather than developing separately within
the colonies.
The current municipal district of
Ostrava-Kunčičky
saw the construction of three colonies in
1896-1905,1900-1904
and
1928-1941:
these were, respectively, the Old colony of the Alexander Colliery
( Stará kolonie ),
with
47
buildings
of which
4
have survived; the New colony of the same mine
( Nová kolonie ),
with
42
buildings of which
19
still exist;
and the Jubilee colony of the
Zárubek
Colliery
( Jubilejní kolonie ),
all
28
of whose original buildings are still standing.
In
1921
the old and new colonies were home to
1108
and
788
people respectively, making up
24.6 %
and
17.5 %
of the
municipality s population. Civic amenities for the
Kunčičky
colonies were mainly located outside the colonies in the centre
of the village, and consisted mainly of schools and small stores, with the exception of the U
Lajdolfů
inn, a workers food
cooperative and the Maxim Gorky park, which were located within the boundaries of the colonies themselves. The same
situation applied to social life, clubs and associations; among the most important organizations were two physical educa¬
tion associations (DTJ
-
Workers Physical Education Association, FDTJ/JPT
-
Proletarian Physical Education Associa¬
tion) and a social democratic atheist association.
The beginnings of colonies in the community of
Michálkovice
date back to
1852,
when workers hostels were built.
These later formed the core of the
Petrská
colony (also known as the Pump colony), built in
1881-1946; 67
of the origi¬
nal
89
buildings
(1946)
still survive. This colony had a nursery school, an inn, a small cinema, and a wide range of stores
and other services. In
1921
it was home to
1258
people
(21 %
of the municipality s total population). There were several
sports associations, trade union organizations, political associations (the Equality association), cultural associations
(including a drama club) and political/ideological associations (including the SPB
-
Proletarian Atheist Association).
At the same time, the Ferdinand colony was built
(1883-1950),
of whose
57
original buildings
(1950)
a total of
52
have
survived. In
1921
this colony washometo897 people
( 15.2 %
of the municipality s population)
.
The colony had only mod¬
est civic amenities (a nursery school and some stores), yet
-
like the rest of
Michálkovice
-
it had a vibrant social life. The
smallest colony in the municipality- the Old colony of the
Michal
Colliery
(1863-1901)
-was also the oldest. Originally
consisting of
18
buildings, only the last three have survived. In
1921
this colony housed
373
people
(6.3 %
of the total
population). Civic amenities were provided by schools and stores in the village centre, and the social lives of the colony s
inhabitants were similar to those of the other citizens of
Michálkovice.
The first colony to be built in
Petřkovice,
beginning in
1888-1889,
was the
Mexiko
colony; these two years saw the
construction of the majority of the colony s
40
buildings (all of which are still standing). More buildings were added in
1920
and
1948,
though there were also other company-owned colonies near the
Anselm
and
Oskar
collieries. The
Mexiko
colony had only a nursery school and a bakery situated in the workers hostel. In
1921
it was home to
779
people
(29.9 %
of
the total population of
Petřkovice).
Social life, clubs and associations were concentrated in the centre of the village rather
than in the colonies themselves.
In the second half of the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century a total of six miners colonies were built
726
in the municipality of Radvanice (now the municipal district of Ostrava-Radvanice). These were attached to Colliery no.
VII
(the Old colony and the Trnkovec colony) and the
Ludvík
Colliery (the colonies at Pod
Kaplí, Trnkovec, Nad Kaplí,
Kamčatka,
and housing for clerical staff). The Old colony of Colliery no.
VII
(1860-1867, 1900)
has now been com¬
pletely demolished. It consisted of a maximum
19
buildings; in
1921
it was home to
406
people
(5.7 %
of Radvanice s
population). The Pod
Kaplí
colony (meaning Below the Chapel ;
1889-1909
and
1947)
consisted of
65
buildings
(1947),
of which
39
have survived. In
1921
its population totalled
1363,
making up almost a fifth of the municipality s population
(19.2 %).
In
1905-1924
the Trnkovec colony was built. With
21
buildings, its population in
1921
was
954 (13.4 %
of the
municipality);
16
of the original
21
buildings still survive. In
1920
work began on a colony for clerical staff at the
Ludvík
Colliery
(1920-1940); 8
of the original
10
residential buildings are still standing. The
Kamčatka
colony
(15
buildings)
was built in
1921-1924;
the entire colony has survived intact. The last of the Radvanice colonies was Nad
Kaplí
(mean¬
ing Above the Chapel ), dating from
1925;
all ten of the original buildings have survived. The colonies at Lipina (Nad
Kaplí)
and Trnkovec had nursery and primary schools, and there was a wide range of stores and services within easy reach.
Radvanice had a rich social and cultural life (with two physical education associations, a branch of the social democratic
atheist association, a workers dramatic association and other clubs), so it is no surprise that the community had many
famous sons and daughters, including the writer
Ladislav Třenecký.
The first colonies built in today s Silesian Ostrava
(Slezská
Ostrava) date back to the mid-19th century. Work evident¬
ly began on the
Františkov
and
Zverina
miners colonies shortly after
1850.
The
Františkov
colony was built in several
stages approximately between
1850
and
1941;
it consisted of
39
residential buildings, of which only three single-storey
structures have survived. In
1921
the colony was home to
782
people
(3.4 %
of the municipality s population), and it
had a good standard of civic amenities (a nursery school, two primary schools, and several nearby stores and other ser¬
vices) as well as a vibrant social life focused around the
František
football club and the
Záboj
choral society. The
Zvěřina
colony (built between
1850
and
1922)
and the neighbouring
Aloisie
colony (1880s) consisted of
40
buildings at their peak
(1922),
of which
26
are still standing
(21
at
Zvěřina
and
5
at
Aloisie).
In February
1921
they were home to
807
people
(115
at
Aloisie),
making up
3.5 %
of the total population of Silesian Ostrava. The
Zvěřina
colony occupied an isolated position;
it had a company hospital and pharmacy, a company inn and two privately run inns, and a rich social and cultural life
including physical education associations and three trade union organizations.
By
1865
work had begun on new colonies within Silesian Ostrava
-
the
Hranečník
colony
(38
buildings in
1946),
the
Salmovec colony
(60
buildings in
1919),
and the Salm colony for clerical staff
(14
buildings in
1923).
The oldest build¬
ings at
Hranečník
date back to the 1860s, and the most recent was built in
1946,
though by that year the number of inhab¬
itants at the colony had fallen compared to
1921
levels
(874
people, or
3.8 %
of the municipality s population). A total of
28
buildings at
Hranečník
have survived. The colony had two Czech-language nursery schools and one German-language
nursery school, a primary school, an inn and a general store. There were trade union organizations, a miners reading
society
(1896-1933),
two physical education associations, and an atheist association. Several inhabitants of
Hranečník
later made successful careers in local and national politics,
academia
and science (Hugo
Vavrečka,
Josef
Kotas,
Václav
Křístek).
The Salmovec colony was built in
1860-1919,
with a new district for clerical staff at the same mine built between
1865
and
1923.
In
1921
Salmovec was home to
1417
people and the clerical district to
154
people, making up a
6.8 %
of
the municipality s population in total.
32
buildings have survived at Salmovec and
10
from the former clerical colony. The
colonies had a company-owned inn, a basic hospital, a school and a bath-house, as well as the Chapel of St Barbara. Social
amenities included the Salm miners reading society
(1871-1939),
whose members included the teachers
Karel Jaromír
Bukovanský
(1844-1932)
and
František Nechanický
(1848-1941)
and the politician Josef
Matušek
(1897-1943).
It is likely that building work on the
Hranečník
and Salmovec went on at the same time as work on a trio of colonies
-
Zárubek, Vilémka
and
Jakubka
-
which together formed the largest workers housing scheme on the right bank of the
Ostravice
River (in
1921
the three colonies were home to
3885
people, or
16.9 %
of the municipality s total population).
Building work began after the opening of the three local collieries
-
Zárubek
(1862),
Vilém
(1866)
and
Jakub
(1872);
by
1873
the central part of the colonies was largely complete. The complex reached its peak in
1900,
when
Zárubek
had
60
buildings,
Vilémka
59
and
Jakubka
69.
Only
11
buildings have survived (dating back to
1912-1941,
all at
Jakubka).
The
complex had excellent civic amenities for its time, with nursery schools, a primary school, several inns, a doctor s surgery,
and a community centre with a cinema screen. During the first half of the 20th century the
Zárubek
colony lived a vibrant
and active social life, including educational associations (a reading society and a national cultural association), physi¬
cal education associations (DTJ,
Sokol,
the
Viktoria
sports club), a chess society, and political/ideological associations.
Famous local people included mining experts
(Bohumil Kaňkovský, Karel Novotný,
Lubomir Ćwik),
sportsmen (the ice
hockey player
Jan Kasper),
and artists
(Karla Divákova).
In the boom years of
1867-1873,
before the economy was hit by a recession (which began with the crash of the Vi¬
enna stock exchange), the north-west part of Silesian Ostrava was the site of two new miners colonies near the
Ostravice
River
-
the Jaklovec colony (for the
Jindřich
and
Terezie
collieries) and the
Kamenec
colony (for the
Trojice
mine)
.
The
37
single-storey buildings that made up the Jaklovec colony were built in
1867-1873
and
1907;
the
42
buildings at
Kamenec
date back to
1871-1873,
the early
1920s
and
1959.
In
1921
Jaklovec had
718
inhabitants
(3.1 %
of the municipal total),
while
Kamenec
had
877 (3.8 %).
Civic amenities were poor, though both colonies were located close to the densely popu¬
lated
Zámostí
district, which offered a wide range of stores and other services. In
1898
and
1908
two schools were built
next to the Jaklovec colony (the Franz Joseph I Jubilee School and a German-language primary school). The colony at
Ka¬
menec
is closely associated with the history of the legendary football club
SK Slezská
Ostrava, founded in
1922
(today
FC
Baník
Ostrava), and both colonies were depicted in literature by regional writers such as
Antonín Hořínek,
Alois
Červenka
727 !
and Ota
Filip.
Not one building from either colony has survived; the sites are now occupied by a modern high-rise develop¬
ment
(Kamenec)
and a road bridge and interchange (Jaklovec).
In the early 1860s work began on the
Centralka
colony
(1873-1902)
for the
Vítkovice
Coal Mines Central Coking
Plants; the colony had up to
25
buildings, but all were razed to the ground in
1940.
In the early years of the colony there
was an emergency hospital, though this was later closed, after which the scheme had no civic amenities at all. Of the
422
inhabitants of
Centralka
in
1921 (1.8 %
of the total population), the best-known are the renowned sculptor
Augustin
Handzel and the manager of the
Kotouč
mine in
Štramberk, Eduard Paloncy.
One of the most common ways of providing housing to Ostrava s miners was to adapt unused buildings at the city s
collieries, converting them for residential use. However, the conversion of the entire
Jindřich
mine was a unique project;
in
1878-1890
the site was converted into a ventilation shaft and the mine buildings became a small colony mainly for
clerical staff. In
1921
the colony consisted of
14
buildings with a total population of
70 (0.3 %
of the municipal popula¬
tion)
;
it had no civic amenities of its own except for the privately owned Herlinger inn. However, none of the buildings have
survived; the last remaining trace of the colony is in the name of
Hýbnerova
Street, named after long-time resident Josef
Hýbner,
the Director of the Moravian Ostrava Mining School.
In the decades either side of
1900,
a trio of colonies (Jan, Josef and
Michaeli)
was built in Silesian Ostrava adjacent
to older company housing, the Jan colony
(1895-1899)
consisted of
18
residential buildings both in the colony itself and
at the Jan Colliery;
13
have survived
(10
in the colony and
3
at the former colliery). The Josef colony
(1903-1909)
had
16
buildings in the colony itself (of which
11
are still standing) and
5
outlying buildings
(2
still exist). In February
1921
these
two colonies were home to
337
and
516
people respectively, making up
1.5 % / 2.3 %
of the total municipal population.
In addition to a nursery school and a primary school, the colonies had several stores and a company-owned inn (run by
the Ferdinand Northern Railway Coal Mining Company), which was the focus of a rich social life (physical education and
sports associations, political/ideological societies, and the Karl Marx Proletarian Dramatic Association). The
Michálka
(Michaeli)
colony (mostly built
1900-1920)
had more modest amenities. With
21
buildings (of which
9
have survived), its
population in
1921
was
420 (1.8 %
of the municipal total). The colony had a health centre and trade union organizations,
and it was briefly home to a reading society.
Among the youngest miners colonies in Silesian Ostrava are the
Trojice
coking plant colony at Hladnov and the
New colony of the
Terezie
Colliery in
Heřmanice
(both now in the municipal district of
Slezská
Ostrava). These two
developments were built adjacent to traditional miners housing dating from around
1850.
The
Trojice
colony consisted
of
14
buildings
(1907
and
1911),
of which
4
still survive. The New colony (built in
1909)
had
10
buildings, all of which
are still standing. The residential buildings near the
Vizina
Colliery have since been demolished, along with several other
buildings at Hladnov. The
Trojice
colony was home to
463
people in
1921 (2.0 %
of Silesian Ostrava s population); how¬
ever, Hladnov was also the site of other workers housing built by the
Wilczek
company and the
Vítkovice
Mining and Iron
Company, which was home to
1280
people
(5.6 %
of the municipal population). The New colony in
Heřmanice
had
467
inhabitants
(14.8 %
of the population of
Heřmanice)
.
The Hladnov community had access to a dense network of stores and
other services, nursery schools and primary schools (both Czech-language and German-language), and a wide range of
associations
-
trade unions, physical education associations and sports clubs, as well as political/ideological associations.
Famous people from Hladnov included the mining engineer Ernst Lipansky and the teacher Alois Cependa, who died at
the hands of the Nazis.
The first workers colony to be built in Silesian Ostrava after the First World War was the
Zita
colony, known from
1921
as the
Bunčák
colony, dating from
1913-1922
(plus several buildings erected in the
1940s
and
1950s
to replace
war-damaged structures). This colony consisted of
21
buildings for employees of the
Ema, Michálka
and
Terezie
collier¬
ies, the
Terezie
coking plant and the directorate of the
Wilczek
Coal Mining and Coking Company. A total of
15
buildings
from the
1913-1922
phase of construction have survived. Civic amenities were limited to two bakeries, a pork butcher,
and a general store. In
1921,
the colony (not yet complete) was home to just
299
people, or
1.3 %
of the population of Sile¬
sian Ostrava. The youngest colony in the municipality was the
Wilczek
colony, between Hladnov and
Františkov,
which
was built in
1931-1938
for labourers and managers of the
Wilczek
Pension Fund and the directorate of the
Wilczek
Coal
Mining and Coking Company. It consisted of
12
well-equipped residential buildings, which may either be considered an
extension of the workers district of
Františkov
or may be seen
asa
separate enclave. These high-quality buildings are still
used for residential purposes today.
The main aim of the second volume in the series Workers Housing Schemes in Ostrava has been to gather basic infor¬
mation on the architectural, demographic and social development of the miners colonies on the right bank of the
Ostrav¬
ice
River and to rectify certain inaccuracies or problematic interpretations that have become widespread. However, the
publication may also serve as a summary
-
supported with empirical data
-
of current research on Ostrava s colonies
and their inhabitants. It will be clear to readers of this second volume in the series that the colonies in the Silesian part of
Ostrava played a major long-term role in the urban fabric of the city, its demographic development and its social life. The
team of authors stands before one final goal: to complete the three-volume series with a study of the workers colonies of
the
Vítkovice
ironworks and other industrial corporations (scheduled for publication in
2014).
