BEIUS AND ITS WORLD
Executive summary
"n the first chapter of the current work we have presented the
.political and social facts of the Southern
Bihor
region of the
country. The author appealed, besides the press releases and
articles, to other documentary sources (especially to those embedding
memoirs content, provided by eyes witnesses and active participants to
the events), thus resulting an interesting political fresco. Thus, we are able
to find how the transition from "communism to freedom" was made
during the "warm December" of the year
1989.
Both the most significant
moments of revolutionary developments (as, for example, the City Hall
assault, the manifestation from "Lamaita", youth manifestations, etc.) and
the most significant human presences in these events (by mentioning the
leaders' names) are recorded. After the victory of the revolution in the
Southern
Bihor,
as in the whole country, the
"Cuvântul
liber" (Free speech)
newspaper was issued while different people acted on the local political
scene and contributed to the organization of the new democratic
institutions. Subsequently there are presented the four local legislatures
ruling Beius during the last two decades, on the basis of accurate
information and data.
The second chapter addresses the Beius city economy during the
same historical period which it starts with the recovering of private
property and the return to market economy. There are pointed out a series
of issues concerning the economic life such as: the housing construction
sector (by National Housing Agency programme), the geothermal water
exploiting, the municipal workings and the importance for the Beius and
Stei
area of the European Drinks company production (owned and
conducted by Micula brothers: loan and Viorel). There are also to be
remembered the subchapters dedicated to the moment when Beius
commune was upgraded to the city rank, the bank system situation and
the latest economic local developments.
A large chapter (third chapter) is dedicated to the educational and
cultural activity of Beius. It contains information on Nicolae Popoviciu"

activity, Beius periodical magazines and journals, the activities carried out
by „Dr.
Constantin
Pavel" library, City Museum, Cultural House, Folk
University, Military Circle and the broadcasting of local Radio and TV
stations. To these
vivant
proofs of cultural life one can add the plastic art,
monuments and sports activities.
Subsequently to the enumeration of all these aspects out of which
the contemporary historical framework of Beius centre has emerged, the
focus shifted on other ways to exploring ancient times and to their
evocation, as for example, the private life of Beius, an evocation which was
accomplished on the basis of
vivant
and subjective but interesting and
colourful memories. These are, of course, complementary reflexes of the
collective memory which, in our times, are embracing large public interest.
The tourism
-
as a form of nowadays economy
-
has a great
importance for the Beius Depression as it possesses a valuable cultural-
historical, ethnographic and geographic' patrimony. That is why an entire
chapter (the fourth chapter) was dedicated to this field. After a short
introduction on Beius city
-
as the tourist hearth of the entire Beius area
-
there are being appointed several tourist facilities and the most well-know
tourist directions which are heading from Beius to several directions,
namely: Mierag Precipices, Meziad Cave, Black
Cris
Valley, Finis Valley,
Sohodol Valley,
Rosia
Valley, Tarcaita valley, Videi-Dobresti-Tacas valley,
Călugări
spring (and the
"Călugări"
Monastery),
Urşilor
(Bears) cave from
Chiscau,
Stana de Vale
mountain resort (well-known since
1878),
Padis,
Biharea Massif and
Scărişoara
Glacier.
In order to better know the Beius world one cannot skip from the
volume the folk and ethnographic which are most representative both for
oeius inhabitant's public life and for their spiritual component. Based on
these dimensions, an entire literature has emerged, but the authors of the
above mentioned chapters have an individual "approach" on them, with

individual synthesis and evaluation elements. After gathering together the
total number of fifteen sub-chapters of the part addressing the
ethnographic expression of this space, a consistent and relevant chapter
was drawn, which component parts we mention: rural settlements
typology, basic traditional arts, trades and crafts, agriculture, cereals crops
(wheat, rye, barley, oats, millet, corn, sunflower, potato, and hemp),
agricultural systems, seasonal works attendance, animal husbandry,,
secondary traditional activities (fruit growing, wine growing, apiculture,
hunting, fishing and free harvesting) peasant technical installations, the
house and its sacred precincts (furniture, textiles and household),
architectural monuments (churches in wood) and the folk traditional
costumes.
As regards the traditional folk and customs from Beius area, it is
worthy to notice that these ones are fully presented in an entire chapter
(the seventh chapter) in a systematic way, structured on precise set forth
themes: researching and gathering the Romanian folklore from the "Black
Crişul"
river area (the exceptional contribution of Miron Pompiliu, the one
of the Hungarian fellow
Bela Bartok
and the achievements of other
intellectuals and specialists to which one can add the activities performed
by pupils of the Greco-Catholic "Samuil Vulcan" Secondary School from
Beiuş
in gathering the local folklore), the general characteristics of the
Bihor
musical and choreographic folklore (the calendar, family and
community ones), the nowadays "state" of Southern
Bihor
folklore,
affected by the metamorphoses caused by the penetration into and of
capitalist world, of an atrocious individualism having an impact on all the
life stages and domains of life. Undoubtedly, the Beius area folklore
anthology is of great documentary and artistic value. We notice the
bibliography at the end of this chapter.
A monographic study of Beius and its world, of this unusable size,
is the one which concludes the current volume (out of the four ones), and
it requires, in a separate shape, a presentation of all those who have valued
and given consistency, by showing it in a national and, sometimes
international, framework. We are speaking here of a mini-encyclopaedia of
those personalities who lived or are living on the Beius region and who
have been tangential with the public life of this very important place from
political, cultural, ethnographical, folkloristic and tourist points of vie. This
is a first "inventory" of those who conferred brightness and visibility to
Beius, as a home of Romanian culture and civilization.
