Summary
In the article devoted to Deleuze s philosophy, Michel
Foucault
posed the following question: what most urgently needs thought in the
twentieth century, if not the event ? The present book attempts to recon¬
sider that concept within the tradition of contemporary French histori¬
ography.
There are many possibilities to analyse the modes of being and using
the event in the historical discourse. One can reconstruct and inter¬
pret what the historians directly told and wrote about that notion in
their works. The second opportunity emerges from Paul Ricoeur s narr-
ativism allowing to treat the event as an element of a historical story. The
third is linked with Thomas Kuhn s term of paradigm: considering both
multiplicity and variety of fields of historical study in France (global
history, microhistory, history of sciences, etc.), it is possible to search
place, meaning and importance of the event in every paradigm .
However, in the book I propose a new perspective of thinking about
the issue. Its aim is to discover in the French historians discourse
several conceptual forms of historic events studied by them in the last
century. It means that from the specific analysis of such phenomena like
revolts, battles, scientific discoveries, sudden accidents, coup attempts,
and so on, I try to abstract more general formal patterns of conceptual¬
izing them. In my opinion, that perspective allows to reveal systematic
thought as well as unexpected isomorphisms of the historical discourse
in its parts focusing on the events.
How should one understand the notion of a conceptual form? What
does it mean that I tend to discover such forms of the historic events? In
the Introduction, following the question formulated by Deleuze: how
386
Summary
do we recognize (structuralism)? , I propose six formal criteria for
recognizing within the discourse something we could call conceptual
form or, in short, concept : a) distinction between term and concept ;
b) distinction between common-sense notion and elaborated concept ;
c) its complexity; d) its internal coherence; e) formal element as a basic
component of a concept; f) many uses of the same conceptual form
in the historical discourse (namely, at least two different phenomena
must be conceptualized in the same formal way). These criteria allow
to distinguish in the contemporary French historiography four concep¬
tual forms of the historic events: a) structural event, b) micro-event,
c) discursive event and d) so called object-event.
In the first chapter, I reconstruct the form of structural event. My
investigation focuses there on five historical examples which are:
a) Claude Bernard s scientific discovery of glycogenic function of a li¬
ver (in Georges Canguilhem s analysis); b) epistemological reorgani¬
zation of medicine in the early 19th century
(Foucault); c) Chouannerie
(Paul
Bois); d)
Spanish conquest of both Americas (Nathan
Wachtel);
and e) incastellamento (Pierre Toubert). In all those cases, the event is
a point of transition between two historic structures. On the one hand,
it puts an end to the old long-term system; e.g., according to
Wachteľs
research, the European conquest of the Indians from the South America
in the 16lh century put an end to their mental structure, namely to their
vision of the world, to their believes, etc. On the other hand, the event
is a source of a new structural phenomenon (the conquest generated
specific Indian dances which incorporated the Indians will of recon¬
structing their world and have been lasting till the present, till our times).
This genetic power of the event is crucial for a living of a new structure
and may depend on its own traumatic nature, the fundamental historic
level on which it took place, etc. Thus, the structural event is not only
a relatively unexpected accident interfering from outside with the order
of structures, but also a kind of structural transformation. That is why
it belongs to what
Bachelard
called
ordre construit^
not
immédiat:
it is
impossible, for example, to describe or directly state that the
Chouan¬
nerie
has created a deep electoral opposition between eastern and western
villagers in France; one must, as
Bois
insists, reconstitute the peasants
political views before the
Chouannerie
and refer to the concepts derived
from Marxism renewed by the social sciences.
The second chapter presents the conceptual form of event which
could be named
microevenť.
To reconstruct it,
1
choose and analyse
seven historical examples, among others: a) Edgar Morin s research
Summary
387
on the anti-Semitic rumour circulating in Orleans in
1969;
b) Georges
Duby s anthropological study of the Battle of Bouvines; c) Emmanuel
Le
Roy LadurJe s reading of the Carnivai in Romans taking place in
1580;
d) Pierre
Retat
scientific group s work on Damiens assassination
attempt of King Louis XV; e) both
Ariette
Farge s and Jacques Revel s
analysis of the rumour and the rebellion rising in Paris in
1750;
f) Alain
Corbin s book on the murder of a young nobleman committed by the
peasants in the French village of Hautefaye in
1870.
Firstly, although
all above-mentioned events, according to the historians researches, are
not important within the history, they are significant for historiography
because of their ability to reveal deeper historic phenomena (e.g. struc¬
tures, systems of thought, everyday life) and make them visible. Thus,
microevent is a kind of
a revelator ,
it functions as a microscope or
a magnifying glass. Moreover, through such events something is always
going to be enounced. For Corbin, the murder in Hautefaye was a mani¬
festation of the local peasants political views; for
Farge anà
Revel,
the riot in Paris in
1750
gave opportunity to raise the new truth that
the people had stopped loving their kings; for Morin, the rumour in
Orléans
was an information about the emotional state of citizens living
in modern town, etc. Shortly, every microevent is a form of expression.
It leads us to another feature
ofthat
concept: if the event allows to reveal
deeper historic strata and expresses some contents, it must be full of
senses and meanings. It is
a polisemantic
phenomenon. For instance,
Duby s approach to the Battle of Bouvines presents it as duel between
two monarchs, divine judgment, liturgical ceremony, act of peace, and
so on. Micro-event is hence a sign or a complex of significants that
demand to be decoded by a historian. And conversely, for better under¬
standing of an event as a whole one should take into account its details
and interpret them, figure out their meanings.
In the third chapter, I focus on the reconstruction of the concept of
discursive event. This term was coined by Michel
Foucault
in his Archa¬
eology of Knowledge and indeed, many of his historical analyses prove
that the statements happen in history. But there are also other histo¬
rians who consider the pieces of discourse (words, phrases, short stories,
rumours,
eie.)
as the events, e.g.
Ariette Farge
studying public opinion
in Paris in the 18th century or Jean-Pierre Faye looking at the Nazi
language. What is original in those approaches to such phenomena? The
most important thing is that the historians do not treat the discourse and
its components as historical sources, but rather as independent elements
of the past, creating their own effects. For example, according to
Farge
388
Summary
and Michel Chaumont, the
Gaullist
placards and posters very often
pushed people to join the French Resistance during the Second World
War. On the other hand, the mere different statements are the effects of
certain historic forces. As other events, they have their own causes. For
Foucault
and
Farge,
it is a question of power and its techniques as well
as strategies which determine a genealogy of discourse ; Faye outlined
a theory of the production of totalitarian statements to indicate the social
and political roots of the Nazi narrative acts. The third main feature of
discursive events is their internal and multidimensional uniqueness. In
the historians 1 perspective, historic statements could have an emotional
dimension, a cultural content, a subversive or strategic potential; they
could be expressions created by accident or belong to the durable ideol-
ogems (e.g. nationcilbolschevismus), etc. All these parameters show
the differences between the apparently similar discursive phenomena
and lei them appear as original and unique events.
In the last chapter I submit a proposition that due to the historians
conceptual work, some past realities (e.g. ancient democracy , ancient
gods , Roman emperor , modern prison or clinic ) got the status
of historic events, although initially they would not be regarded as
such. Thus, event is not the input but the output data. It is the effect of
the procedure of
événementialiscttion
(Foucault s notion). What does
it mean? It means that in history we must break up with both natural
and self-evident aura surrounding a past phenomenon. As Paul Veyne
shows, the Roman emperor or ancient historiography
(à la
Herodotus,
Thucydides and so on) should not be taken for granted, because each
of them had their own unique aspects and a similarity between two
things having the same name is only superficial: if we compare in
detail the ancient historical writing with the modern one
-
Herodotus
with Braudel
-
the differences will appear so huge that a supposed link
between two historiographies will be undermined. And in fact, Veyne
reveals a specific character of the ancient historical writing, proving
that it reminds rather contemporary journalism than scientific historiog¬
raphy. He uses the same method to construct the singular configurations
of ancient god, Greek democracy, Roman law, paganism, etc. It leads us
from what Veyne called
objet naturel
to what one can call
objet événe¬
mentiel.
In the next part of this chapter I distinguish another features of
that concept of event: its implicit nature; its function as a polymorphic
polygon of possibilities (e.g. Caligula or Domitian actualized a virtual
and unique form of Roman emperor considered as a configuration of
Summary
389
several possible acts attributed to him); and its historic specificity (in a
sense of
einzigartig).
At the end of every chapter I try to prove that there are strict and
even logical relations between the features of every conceptual form
which I analyze.
The main conclusion of the book is that one historic event could be
potentially an object of at least four
different
conceptual approaches
allowing to produce various images of the same phenomenon.
