SUMMARY
The Ogurdinskiy burial ground is situated in the Usolye region of
Perm Krai on the bank of the river Kama on the territory of a pine
forest.
During the several years of excavations
281
burials have been
examined. Two types of burial rites were determined: inhumation and
cremation types. The inhumation rite has got two variants: inhumation
on the wooden covering (scaffold) and inhumation on the bottom of a
pit. The majority of burials belong to the inhumation on the scaffold
category
(236
burials
- 85.5%).
For ritual reasons a layer of soil with
small pieces of charcoal or a layer or river sand with small pebbles
were placed on the bottom of the pit. On top of the pit a scaffold made
of wooden blocks was placed. The remains of the blocks have been
discovered in some of the burials. The scaffold was fixed on the lugs
and steps and sometimes right on the edges of the pit. The deceased
dressed in clothes with decorations positioned in the order of wearing
was laid on the scaffold. The attending implements were placed on the
scaffold next to the deceased. The scaffold with the deceased was covered
with a thin layer of soil and small pebbles. When the scaffold rotted
through, it collapsed into the pit and the burial implements got displaced
and happened to be at a different depth from the surface to the bottom.
In addition while the supporting parts were rotting (threads, leather
strings, small straps), some implements probably got detached from
the costume before the body collapsed into the pit. It could explain a
considerable number of findings not only within the boundaries of the
burial, but around it and not at a great depth.
Thus in the burial the bones of the skeleton got shuffled and spread
either along the burial pit or were concentrated in the centre of the
burial, as the scaffold usually rotted through in the middle, on which
the whole weight of the body fell and where most of the rotting organic
matter concentrated.
Burials attributed to the cremation category contained calcinated
bones. Calcinated bones were discovered in
22
burials
(7.9%).
The
deceased was committed to the flames outside the burial ground.
Excavations of
2001-2002,
which took place on the peripheral parts of
the burial ground, showed that burials of the cremation category
belonged to the periphery. These burials are usually positioned in the
groups of
2
or
3
and are accompanied by an additional complex of pits.
Fire played a significant role in the burial rite. Traces of ritual
actions with fire have been discovered in
86.9%
of burials. Small pieces
of charcoal in burial pits form a peculiarity of
Ugric
burial rite.
Practically all burial grounds of the
Ugric
circle contain small pieces
of charcoal, which, according to some researchers, is connected with
the custom of throwing the remains of the burial fire into the grave.

lenses of light river sand (sometimes with
little river pebbles) were discovered in the filling or on the bottom of
the grave.
In
6.5%
burials animal bones
-
mostly teeth and fragments of horse
jaws
-
were discovered. The custom of placing a horse skin, a horse
head or separate horse jaws in the burial and next to it is characteristic
of the majority of cultures of the
Ugric
circle.
In the Ogurdinskiy burial ground in two burials
(№ 48
and
76)
silver burial masks (facial covers) have been discovered. Both masks
are the persona-masks characteristic of the period from the 10th to the
first part of the 11th centuries. The masks are thin oval silver plates
with holes for eyes and mouth. The noses are protruding and of a
rectangular shape.
The Ogurdinskiy burial ground dates back to the end of the 10th
-
first part of the

lth century. Such a narrow dating allows considering
it as the basic site for studying the late period of the Lomovatovskaya
Culture. The burial ground was left by a large group of mixed
Ugric
and Finnish population with the dominance of the
Ugric
people both of
the Permian Cis-Urals and the Trans-Urals origin. The Finnish
population is represented by the Vym archeological culture from the
territory of the current Komi Republic.
