UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Black Women, the Black Church, and the Struggle to Thrive in America
Explores the history and potential of black churches as agents of change in reducing
poverty, especially for black women.
“[A] pioneering and path-blazing work in Christian ethics that combines a sophisticated
class-based notion of thriving with an asset-building approach of public policy for
prophetic Christian praxis. Keri Day makes Martin Luther King Jr. and Fanny Lou Hamer
smile from the grave!”-Cornel West, Princeton University
“A very important and much needed reflection on black women and the black church.
- James H. Cone, Union Theological Seminary
“Day sees the black churches as neither mindless salve nor blithe heroic but as sites
that promote thriving with and for poor black women. Day crafts vital new territory in
black moral thought and social ethics in general. A must read.
- Emilie M. Townes, Yale Divinity School
This striking portrayal of poor black women in this country describes the unemployment,
underemployment, isolation, and lack of assets many typically experience. Day also
takes on, and demolishes, the common stereotypes that castigate these women as
“morally problematic and dependent on the money of good tax-paying citizens.”
Day then calls on the black churches to become potential agents of change and leaders
in addressing the unequal social and economic structures that hold these women
captive. The goal is to empower poor black women to develop assets that will prevent
long-term poverty and allow them to flourish.
Keri Day is an assistant professor of theological and social ethics and the director of
Black Church Studies at Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth, Texas. She has contributed
chapters to three books, including The Oxford Handbook of African-American Theology.
