Summary
The book deals with the evolution of the house of
Waldstein in
the era one hundred years after the Thirty Years War. Both mile¬
stones which were chosen
(1640
and
1740)
are not exactly kept
because of narration logic. An integrated and compact view is
presented on
Waldsteins
activities. Its property, political power
and an amount of social relations rank them among high aris¬
tocratic class. It was one of the most famous and most power¬
ful family structures in early modern Bohemia and in the whole
Habsburg
monarchy as well. Used research methods combine
a lot of approaches including biography (prosopography) and
structure analysis. Relations between the
Waldstein
family and
the changing social and political structures are inquired.
In the first part the work deals with the economic base of the
Waldstein
family consisting of the network of domains situated
all over the whole north and northeastern Bohemia. In this case,
the Waldsteins were manorial lords, but they could not misuse
their position. According to the Christian doctrine, they should
take care of their subjects. The members of the house of Waldstein
engaged in the management of their domain in various ways.
Some family members looked after their domain and they settled
in the centre of it, the others were dependent on courts, so they
could not intervene to the domain organisation. In this case the
bureaucracy had to be entrusted. The Waldsteins were generally
responsible householders, they supported their subjects (all the
citizens of the residential towns) to gain new privileges, in spite
of a few conflicts between the Waldsteins (or their bureaucracy)

and their liege towns (for example in
Turnov).
Under the super¬
vising of the manorial lord or his bureaucracy, the domains were
going through a lot of deep changes. The goal of these actions
was a rationalization of manorial economy, which could not stay
only on the agricultural basis, but turn to manufactures. They
arose as a product of the new economic thought (mercantilism),
which had begun to penetrate to Bohemia at the beginning of
18th century.
The second part of the book deals with the house of
Waldstein
on the whole. The filiation, family and correspondent connec¬
tions with the
Waldsteins
and other aristocratic houses are de¬
scribed. But they had to maintain relationships with the inferior
men (gentry, jurists, townsmen) as well.
Waldsteins
accumula¬
tion of economic power and political influence made a network
of clients holding the positions in the land administration, pro¬
viding an important information and influencing the legal cases.
Through the informal patron-client relations the
Waldsteins
made their position in the Bohemian society stronger. It seems it
was not a house as an aggregation of persons, but an individu¬
al social organism with its own strategies, which were manifest¬
ed by the orientation toward the marriage with certain chosen
families from Bohemia (Czernin),
Habsburg
monarchy (Harrach)
and even from Holy Roman Empire
(Fürstenberg).
Above all the
endogamy in the house of
Waldstein
should be stressed. The en¬
dogamy was caused by the pursuit to save the domain for fu¬
ture members of the family and by the fact that the house was
branched off into many family branches. The cooperation of the
house and its friends, relatives and clients was manifested not
only by depressed and felicitous moments (a death or birth of
family member) but during the everyday life as well (meetings,
common dinners etc.). The acquirement of the political functions
or legal conflicts with other noblemen confirmed this network.
Friendships and also animosity could continue during many gene¬
rations, they could be inherited from a father to the son.
The third part of the book concerns stories of the personalities
growing from the house of
Waldstein,
their activities in the frame
of early modern state and their careers. In the time of 17th and

18th centuries, the importance of a noble man was connected with
the fealty to the ruler; the service for the ruler was an essential
assumption for making the career. As courtiers, diplomats and
officers, the
Waldsteins
came up to expectations of their estate.
The models of aristocratic careers can be related to the life cy¬
cle. The
Waldsteins
preparation for the following function began
during the educational process containing the study at universi¬
ties in Prague and in Western Europe („grand tour ). The high¬
est level of careers was represented by diplomatic actions and
the
Waldsteins
created international relations several times. This
service was connected with life in vicinity of the Emperor and
many
Waldsteins
occupied the first places at the court in Vienna.
Besides the central offices, they were entrenched in the highest
provincial offices. The poorer members of the house did not have
possibilities to make their career in such a chief places and had to
move into Bohemia administration offices as a regional authority
(Kreishauptmann).
The nobility could make the running not only
in the state structure but in other social hierarchies for example
in the Catholic church or in the army, which was integrated into
the state during the 17th century.
We can observe a lot of common tendencies of the progress of
early modern Bohemia after the Thirty Years War on the basis
of one aristocratic house. It was created by the ensemble of the
persons connected under the blazon with four lions. The house
and its members affected the world around them the
Waldsteins
left many marks in the cultural and agricultural landscape. They
defended not only their own interests, but also the interests of
their country and their ruler as well. They made a network of
connection so they bound the different social and geographic en¬
vironments. By this way the house of
Waldstein
really played im¬
portant part not only in Bohemian but also in European history.
