THE NEAMŢ
DEPRESSION.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL CONTRIBUTIONS
Abstract
Our paper focuses on the archaeological vestiges of
a géomorphologie subunit
-
the
Neamţ
Depression
-
in the North of the Oriental Subcarpathians. From the
administrative point of view, this territory corresponds with a sector of the northeast
area of
Neamţ
County, comprised between Moldova Valley and the mountains.
After some introductory considerations, where is fully explained the
necessity of the present scientific output, there is a presentation of the
archaeological researches over the years, in the presented area. From this point
of view, it is interesting to remember that the first vestiges were signalled in the
middle of 19th century, and over one hundred years later, the region is submitted
to a more intense research, either by systematic diggings, or by surface surveys.
To fully comprehend the evolution and the dynamics of the prehistoric
populations, we also brought into discussion elements regarding the geography,
the natural resources and the possible communication routes.
The
Neamţ
Depression is the northern segment of the Subcarpathian
sector, and is confined by several mountain and submountain formations. The
relief has an overall wavy appearance, with hilly and rolling interfluves,
alternating with wide valleys, which have full-blown major shingles. Likewise,
a full
hydrographie
basin can be found in this depression, having as the most
important watercourses
Neamţ
River and
Topoliţa
River, which are tributary
streams of Moldova River. These two rivers, along their feeders, engendered a
complex assembly of terraces, which were chosen by the ancient human
communities in order to settle.
As what regards the habitation factors, we have to mention here the
importance of the water sources (rivers, streams, creeks), but also of the many
salted water springs. The latter can be met both in the inner part of the depression,
and in its vicinity, many of them being exploited in
pre-
and in protohistory.
The area that is subject here was crossed by several circulation routes that
facilitated the good exchange. This situation is advocated by the existence of
flint or volcanic rock manufactured artefacts. These raw materials have been
brought from fairly great distances.
An important part of the paper is represented by the repertoire of
archaeological sites and discoveries. The inventory comprises

sites, which,

chronologically, belong to the period between Paleolithic and the 8th century A. D.
Alongside these
68
sites, there can be added some insular discoveries specific to the
above epochs. A form was created for each archaeological site, which contains the
essential data regarding the type and the year of the research, its geographic
location, the discoveries made, and the chronological and cultural framing.
The most important part of the paper consists of archaeological and
historical considerations. In order to establish a general view of the matter, each
chronological stage was examined and discussed, according to the data that the
author has gathered through his own research, corroborated with information
from the archaeological publications.
Although we do not know any settlement, the isolated discoveries sustain
the presence of the Paleolithic communities in the
Neamţ
Depression. Until this
moment, there were discovered several flint pieces and paleofaunistic remains,
that are attributed to the middle and late phases of Paleolithic.
Here we have only two archaeological sites belonging to the Neolithic, of
which one is attributed to
Starčevo-Cris
culture, and the other belongs to the
Linear Pottery Culture. Both sites were investigated through diggings, and as
such were identified habitation instances and diverse archaeological material.
One important thing to mention is that some
Starčevo-Cris
groups exploited
also salted water springs from the depression's vicinity.
The Chalcolithic period is more habitual, and the sites belonging to
Precucuteni and Cucuteni cultures are specific for this chronological step.
As regards the Precucuteni culture, remarkable results were acquired in the
Târpeşti
diggings, where were identified several dwellings and even defensive
structures. Alongside the information resulted from the investigation of this site, the
author of this paper also identified four other sites, belonging to the 2nd and
3
phases of the Precucuteni culture. The most important retrieved archaeological
materials are the ceramics and the stone artefacts. All the settlements are centred in
the
Topoliţa
River
hydrographie
basin, in the depression's midland.
The Cucuteni culture is represented through a much larger number of
settlements, outspreaded on different types of terrain. In the present day, the
known sites belong only to the first phase of the culture (Cucuteni A) and to the
last one (Cucuteni B). It was possible to obtain certain information on the
internal structure of the settlements, on the dwellings, on the defensive systems,
through systematic diggings or through surveys in the
Târpeşti, Vânători-Neamţ
and
Târgu Neamţ
sites.
In what regards the dynamics of the Cucutenian groups, it is noticeable a
non-uniform spread in the depression. A possible supposition is that some
communities entered this geographic area from the Moldova River Valley,
following the
Neamţ
and
Topoliţa
Rivers. In the Cucuteni A phase, the
settlements can be found on almost all types of terrain, whilst in the Cucuteni

phase the settlements can be found only on those types of terrain that are
singularized from the neighbouring types.
The recovered archaeological material that originated from these sites has
as dominant the ceramics, with the subjacent three species: commune, painted,
and belonging to the „C" type. But there were also identified numerous tools,
made of stone and of flint, objects made of clay and of copper, and, alongside
them, also anthropomorphic and zoomorphic representations.
The Bronze Age is known through a significant number of discoveries,
the middle and late periods being the best represented.
For the Early Bronze Age, there are some traces of habitation and some
funeral compounds that are attributed to the
Târpeşti
cultural group, and that
were discovered in the eponymous station.
The archaeological surface surveys of the last years allowed the
identification of several settlements that are characteristic for the middle of the
Bronze Age. These settlements belong to the
Costişa
culture, and can be found in
the superior basin of
Topoliţa
River. They stand mostly on dominant formations of
terrain. Among the archaeological materials discovered in these sites, there are
some singularized items, especially a rich ceramic repertoire, but also numerous
components of the lithic industry (tools, weapons), that support analogies with the
findings of other contemporary sites from the Subcarpathian area of Moldova.
As what regards the Late Bronze Age, there is a much ampler set of data,
of which results
о
pretty high density of archaeological stations; they are
situated mostly on lower terrains or on the hill declivities. At this time, we do
not have enough information regarding the internal structure of the settlements,
but what we do know is that they had variable dimensions, according to the
topographical conditions. In the case of this culture also, a great part of the sites
is attested in the
hydrographie
basin of
Topoliţa
River. Although we do not
have any material evidence, we can assume that the population of the
Noua
Culture in the
Neamţ
Depression has known and was able to exploit the
different salted water springs from the area.
The following chronological segment is the one of the Iron Age, with its
two main phases:
Hallstatt
and
Latène.
The reduced number of sites, and the
character of the researches, does not offer any complex data that would permit a
detailed analysis for this period.
For the
Hallstatt
phase, there are some known settlements, but in only
two situations they were investigated through diggings. There was recovered
mainly ceramic material and several metallic items. From the cultural point of
view, it is possible to admit that the majority of these sites belong to the
Corlătem-Cm'şinău
culture.
Of some importance are the discoveries that are ascribed to the Late
Hallstatt,
the several Akinakes type iron daggers that were found being of great

interest,
and also
a fibula
fragment, made of bronze, belonging to the Beotic
shield type. If, in what regards the Akinakes type iron daggers, it is possible to
presume the intromission of groups of population of Eastern origin, the
fíbula
fragment is, instead, specific to the Middle Danube cultural environments.
The second period of the Iron Age is very little known, the most
significant results having been obtained during the old researches in the
Târpeşti
site. Here, alongside local elements, were found archaeological materials of
Bastarnae provenance, and also Celtic emanation.
After an hiatus of two or three centuries, approximately, time in which
we do not have any archaeological evidences, we arrive at the Roman and
Postroman
period, corresponding with the interval of time that covers the 2n
-
8th centuries p.
Chr.
For the tract of the 2nd and 3rd centuries p.
Chr.,
there are identified
vestiges belonging to the Free Dacians (here, to the Carpi tribes), whose
settlements can be found all over the Depression. The two coin hoards found at
Târpeşti
and
Ghindăoani
are of great importance for the understanding of the
economic particularities, of the relations with the Roman Empire, but also of the
monetary circulation.
For the 4th century p.
Chr.,
and even for the first half of the next one, the
discussion revolved around the archaeological evidences derived from settlements
belonging to
Sântana de Mureş
culture, on which there are admixed the results of
the researches in two necropolis of the Carpathian Barrows culture.
In regard of the 5th/6th-8th centuries, the data at our disposal are pretty thin
because the number of the archaeological sites is extremely small. Still, it is
interesting to mention that, in two out of the three objectives that are specific to
the mentioned chronological interval, the research brought up new information
regarding the human communities from the next period of the Antiquity.
A short chapter is reserved for the conclusions, which target
miscellaneous aspects regarding the intensity and the current state of knowledge
of the different epochs and cultural environments from the specified area, the
dynamics of the human groups, and the influence of the environmental factors
on their development.
The final part of the paper approaches the interdisciplinary studies, on the
analysis of batches of lithic pieces, archaeozoological materials from the
Chalcolithic period, several samples of burnt adobe, originated from the walls
of Chalcolithic and Bronze Age dwellings and metallographic analyses. The
importance of these studies, belonging to specialists from the Romanian
National Museum, "Babes
Bolyai"

Iaşi,
comes from the
completions that they bring on what regards the prehistoric technologies and on

the economy of the ancient human communities, that are impossible to be well
known and accurate enough solely through archaeology.
The illustration, comprised of maps, photographs and drawings of
archaeological material, sustains the discussions of the paper.
To conclude, we can say that the new archaeological contributions,
corroborated with the data published in the last decades, illustrates a rather
ample picture of the evolution of the ancient human communities in
Neamţ
Depression, closely connected with the geographic space in which they resided,
but also with the population groups in the vicinity, with which they interacted. |
