The modem history of Albanian nation which as it is
known culminates with the date

as a
milestone ofthe Albanian state, innoway, can be understooa
without the role and contributions of Aqif Pasha the wise
man ofElbasan, the statesman which courageously manages
to be part ofthe Albanian national history and to
remam
an outstanding figure in all experienced situations and
circumstances, not only in laying the solid foundations oj
independence but also for the consolidation ofthe modem
trends and the functioning ofthe Albanian state During
tne
firsthalfofthetwentiethcenturyandparticularlydunngme
period:
1909-1926,
there is not a single event oj the history
of Albanian people and state as well, in which he does not
participate, fully involved, with the boundless love for he
homeland and the Albanian people, offering his leadership

and professional skills in a responsible way, becoming
part of the Pleiades of the renown Albanian figures at the
national level like: Ismail
Bej Vlora,
Isa Boletini,
Luigj
Gurakuqi, etc.
The book which you are taking in your hands, entitled
not by chance "Pasha of Elbasan", a special publication
in the framework of the 100th of the Independence of the
Albanian state, is a bright window from where we could
see the great figure of the Albanian independence and
particularly of the nation survival, the outstanding patriot
and the unexampled statesman, Aqif Pasha
Elbas
ani.
The
destinies of Pasha and his hometown, which was one of the
main centres of education and patriotism at the national
level, the homeland of the Albanian famous scholars and
linguists like Kristoforidhi and Xhuvani and the town of
the first teacher training high school in Albania seems as
associated inextricably. The Biography of Aqif Pasha is the
reflection of the long way and efforts of the Albanian people
and the history of the Albanian slate from its beginnings
to the last moments of the Pashas life. The book "Pasha
of Elbasan" which has in its focus this honourable figure,
one of the key figures of Albanian independence and the
existence of the Albanian state, tries to shed more light
on this patriot who is already known but still not explored
in all his patriotic and human qualities, on his role and
influence on the significant events which took place in the
first quarter of the twentieth century.
Therefore, aiming to fill out this gap on his life and his
major contributions to the benefit of the Albanian nation
and state, two authors originated from Elbasan town, two
descendants of the bright Pasha, the well-known writer

especially in the genre of prose,
Bahr i Myftari
and the
proficient activist on the promotion of the values ofElbasan
town, Serxhio Mazreku, made possible to bring to the
attention of their fellow-citizens as well as the other Albanian
citizens, once again, the great personality of Aqif Pasha on
the occasion of the centennial of Albania's independence.
I want to emphasize beforehand that starting from the
premise of the book, its content and objective, its thematic
conception and elaboration, the features of the text which
are conceptualised as literary despite its historical aspect,
bring the testimonies of the life and activity of Pasha, the
honourable figure ofElbasan region. Most of the stories
included in this book can be considered as genuine literary
prose and in my opinion, bear and unfold two essential
features as follows:
Firstly, This is a book written jointly by two authors,
both of them associated closely with their town of origin
and at the same time, admirers and with good knowledge
on the life and activity of the main character of this book,
who is the personality of Pasha ofElbasan, viewed from the
human and social activity aspects
andas
a personality who
had a significant influence in the beginnings of the Albanian
state which was one of its most difficult periods as well.
This joint undertaking from both authors indicates that they
share mostly same ideas and attitudes on the outstanding
personality of the Albanian modern history, Aqif Pasha
who was born and spent almost all his lifetime in Elbasan
town. More than a fortuitous association of this book
writing, it's interesting to mention here the backgrounds
of the each author. Bahri Myftari, a well-known writer, the
author of many boob in the genre of prose and especially a

successful short story writer, whose prose is characterised
by reviewers as associated to the magical realism and the
other author, Serxhio Mazreku, who has published so far
several books on the political and economic developments of
Albania during the period in transition from the collapse of
communist regime to the first decade of the new millennium.
Secondly, In this book, there are interlinked with
eloquence the historical facts and the literary writing of its
main character who is the personality of Pasha ofElbasan
as the emblem of this town and the Albanian-hood, focusing
on his patriotic and human qualities. Such situations of the
interconnection of the history with fiction, of a factual and
virtual review, with many details in the most essential phases
of the life of this outstanding figure of the Albanian history,
of the state defence and the aspirations for freedom of the
Albanian people, at the same time makes this character
more unique, as a concise approach and its brings up a
twofold, doubled, tangible and imaginary introduction.
Over all, the proportion between these two aspects, thus of
biographical, factual and literary ones in which the literary
aspect prevails being focused on the personality of Aqif
Pasha, makes the text colourful and interesting as well.
Regarding the historical aspect, and seen as a
factual evidence, it takes special values, the organic and
right association of this figure to the influential family of
Bicakcinj which as it is known in the Albanian history and
numerous archives, has brought up many proficient army
generals and commanders, professors and architects,
pashas and viziers of the ottoman empire which reinforces
us the conviction that Aqif Pasha did not emerge by chance
but as a trustworthy offspring of the Albanian nobility

which during all its history, has been on the avant-garde
of the nation defence, of the civilized values of Albanians
and on the lead of the efforts and sacrifices to represent
and witness the Albanian being. His role on the Albanian
independence as a major act headed by Ismail
Bej Vlora,
as the close friend and fellow-fighter of the latter, as well
as the contribution of Aqif Pasha in the troubled season of
the Balkan War and misdeeds ofHaxhi Qamili,
hada
direct
impact on obstructing of the regressive forces against the
Albanian new state up to the Lushnja Congress in which
Aqif Pasha was elected as Chairperson of the Assembly.
Also, this book shed light on the majesty of this figure who
emerged in the Albanian political scene in the most difficult
periods of the existence of the Albanian nation and state,
remaining constantly a relentless, and unwavering patriot
and initiator as well.
On the other side, the literary matter which composes
the majority of this book, is focused on the human and
patriotic character of Aqif Pasha in which Bahri Myftari
as a well-known prose writer keeps the heaviest burden
on his shoulders, outlining and going into the depth of the
human, gentleness and force of the main character as well
as his generosity, thus revealing the best human values of
this man and accomplishing in this way the missing part of
his nature that was not brought so far by the other authors.
In the literary prose, conceived through the confession
and description, dialogue and other artistic known means,
the character of this Albanian statesman, one of the most
outstanding Albanian figures of the first half of the last
century, is portrayed throughout some of the key moments
of his life. As a genre of prose, it is preferred more the short

story
by the co-authors which focuses on some critical
moments of the main character depicted and enlightened in
its main components. This has made that the human aspect
to be fully disclosed and unfolded in a reliable way, without
many tricks and artifices and even in many cases preserving
the human features of Pasha, regardless of the point of view
and nuances which are mostly used in the stories of this
book.
The story "The maturity of the wise man", as an
attractive finding and fiction as well, establishes in its
centre the wisdom of a man and in the background of this
story. There are brought the circumstances of the Vlora War,
the atmosphere of that time is provided clearly through
the media reports in and out of the country. This story is
based mainly on the narrative, describing the happenings
and the protagonist as well especially his human aspect
which is the main goal of this book. Placing the main
character particularly in the existential situations of the
history of Albanian nation and its own state, it brings also
in a spontaneous way remembrances of the wise old man of
Ismail Qemali who is the father of Albanian independence,
so it evokes a past of one hundred years ago with the only
purpose to illuminate some important moments of the
Albanian history and its main protagonists. The message
transmitted though the story is processed and well-
introduced artistically indicating that in the foundations of
the independence were the great human sacrifices as it is
the case of the bride donating her marriage ring for it. As a
matter of fact, in this story, gets revealed not only the known
conflict between the Albanian aspiration for freedom and
independence facing the interests of the Ottoman Empire
and neighbour countries which use every opportunity

to secede parts of the Albanian populated territories but
also the conflicts within the Albanian families because
of the great sacrifices. This moment in the narrative of
the authors reveals not only the qualities of humanism,
accountability and majesty of the Pasha ofElbasan but also
a well-described event of reconciliation in which the ring
is replaced with the flag of independence, lining up the text
with a magical writing tissue.
In the other story "Guest of Pasha
',
both authors of
the book, skilfully, focus on another event which was vital
for the existence of the Albanian state as it was Lushnja
Congress in which as it is known, Aqif Pasha together
with Ahmet Zogu, the King of Albania, had a fundamental
role and weight. This congress is considered as the second
most significant event of the existence of the Albanian state
following its independence. It is remarked that this story
is built on its narration as a substantial mean of poetics
as it quoted by T. Todorov, in his book "Poetics of the
prose
",
that is considered unquestionably as the essential
mean of the prose writing associated with the aim to
note the historical truth, interconnected with the genuine
literary impression and in which the second unfolding, thus
artistic evidence is the most important aspect to draw the
characters, occurrences and rises and falls of the period of
time. The special feature of this interesting story with regard
to its fable and conception, even of the literary and real
factuality, is linked with the proper use of dialogue, probably
formatted as another advantage to feel the weight of the
words, mind and spirit of Pasha which in fact, discovers as
well the other character, named
Teodor,
recalling an early
friendship conceived in difficult times which seems to have

overcome religious divisions among Albanians for the sake
of the homeland and independence as well.
Throughout the pages of the other story "Hotel Pasha
",
both authors evoke a period of time, which is related to the
honouring and remembering of Pasha of Elbasan after
many decades that he had passed away shedding light also
on this outstanding personality. His indirect presence as a
special finding reveals more his grandiose features. In this
story, more than other parts of the book, we touch the ability
of curving the portraits of the characters of the short prose
with regard to their physical and non-physical aspects. The
prose "Hotel Pasha" quite different from other stories of
the book moves freely and skilfully in the spaces of three
periods of time, the present time in which the property has
its own lord and is considered as sanctified; the period of
beginning of the last century in which because of the direct
threats, main character emigrates to another country; and
a closer period of time as it was the communist regime
when the private property did not exist anymore. The main
protagonist moving in these three periods of time is named
Gene
Marsi,
a descendant of the blood and clan of Pasha
and a relative of another well-known Albanian national
figure ofLuigj Gurakuqi.
The other story "Authority" brings us another
substantial view of Aqif Pasha, the events takes place in his
hometown, in Elbasan, the cradle which rocked this Pasha
and his distinguished clan over centuries and it unfolds
the Albanian craziness where every individual struggle to
build its own country, surrounding with fence, a narrative
decribing misdeeds of the quasi "army general" which
spontaneously brings the anarchy in the country caused by
Haxhi Qamili.

While the other story "Machine gunner" unfolds with
a confession, perhaps influenced by the Albanian popular
prose writer, Mitrush
Kute
li,
the view of Elbasan town in
the beginning of the last century, singling out Bezistani'
sight. In this prominent story given the ability of describing
and featuring the situations and characters, the authors
bring the atmosphere created in the Albania, one year after
the independence with the backward movements of the
notorious figure, Haxhi Qamili who is described skilfully
with the connotations of grotesque and elegant sarcasm.
There is depicted also the great patriot,
Bajram
Curri
but
the main line of the story is love between two youngsters, the
main character, Xhezair
Sula
represents the man who can't
stand the injustices and oppose the actions of the Haxhi
Qamili followers, so he enjoys the support of the Pasha.
The book "Pasha of Elbasan", a specific case of the
intertwining between the real and historical facts and the
genuine literary writing, given in short stories, is a valuable
contribution aiming to bring to the public attention the
untiring patriot in his restless efforts,
finsi
for the the
Albanian state independence and then for its strengthening
and consolidation. The typology of writing of this book
put at his centre, the great figure of Aqif Pasha through
an interesting approach of combining the historical and
literary facts and findings. This kind of book focusing on the
historical figures brought through the literary conception
is built similarly with the other historical novels like "The
Castle
"
of the famous Albanian writer, Ismail
Kadaré,
whose main character is the Albanian national hero of

Open Bazaar.

Scanderbeg, elaborated more through the literary means
and approaches moving in time from the fifteenth century
to the modern times and offering a contribution to shed
more light on the myth and the symbol of Albanian being
and survival. Another example of such pattern of books
is the other marvellous prose "The Backward Year" of
Ismail
Kadaré
which brings in its focus the chaotic period
in Albania in the beginning of the First World War when
the Albanian populated territories were being burnt and
destroyed and as a good example in which the literature
shed light on the historical facts through going deeply in
the life of certain renown and ordinary people. Also, we
can mention the books of the other Albanian writer and
politician, Sabri
Godo,
on Scanderbeg and
Ali
Pasha
Tepelena as successful historical novels of the Albanian
literature in its optic of enlightening of the history.
Therefore, the book "Pasha of Elbasan" belongs to
the writing typology of literature based on the historical
factuality of the significant personalities. It can be
read perhaps as a literary monography which does not
contradicts the historical facts, divided in stories, aiming
to carve the great figure of Pasha of Elbasan town which
is called the cradle of knowledge and culture. The reading
of these stories and the text in general of this book on the
life and deeds of this personality, is a good reference point.
The book can be considered as a significant contribution of
the both authors on the life and multiple public activity of
Pasha of Elbasan. In my assessment, this type of conception
of this book makes it more interesting for the readers rather
than only the listing of historical facts which could sideline
the human nature and its impact on the life of ordinary

Citizens
of this personality. I want to congratulate both
authors,
Bahr i Myftari
and Serxhio Mazre
kufor
this great
contribution, bringing the great figure ofAqif Pasha to the
Albanian readers on the occasion of 100th anniversary of
Albanian independence. I would strongly recommend this
book to a wide range of Albanian readers because it brings
the multiple personality of Aqif Pasha as a great patriot and
a generous man, a symbol ofElbasan region and missionary
of Albanian independence particularly on the centennial of
this very important occasion for the Albanian nation.
