increasing competition due to globalization. While innovations as precondition to survive
make a holistic innovation orientation

indispensable from a practical point of view,
academic research on
10
has been at its infancy.
The present research examines the drivers and consequences of
10
from a contingency
perspective. The study contributes to the broad body of innovation literature and to the
field of
10
in particular. Moreover, by integrating and tackling research gaps in related
research fields, the present study adds to the leadership, managerial discretion, and cross-
cultural management literature.
The study consists of two main parts: while Part A introduces the topic. Part

presents
the three stand-alone papers in detail including cross-cultural comparisons based on data
from six western and eastern countries.
More concretely, Part A summarizes the development of the current state of research on
organizational innovation in general and on
10
in particular, thus outlining the research
gaps in the research field of
10
on a broad level. Based on this, the overall research
framework investigates the outcomes of
10,
that is its effect on firm performance, and
drivers, that is the impact of top management s leadership style on group and the CEO s
attention on innovation on individual level. By analyzing factors through lenses on differ¬
ent levels
—
that is, the individual, group, organizational, and national levels, the present
study provides a more complete understanding than the
insides
derived from looking at
one level alone of the complex phenomenon of
10.
Moreover, in order to evaluate the
generalizability of the investigated relationships, the overall research framework applies a
contingency perspective by examining moderators that is the degree a nation s national
culture values, its socioeconomic development status, and the degree of managerial dis¬
cretion. Following an elaboration of the underlying theoretical premises, Part A gives de¬
tails on the data collection process. In order to check the hypotheses empirically, archival
and survey data gathered in six eastern and western countries was collected and applied.
Next, Part A provides a summary of the three empirical papers and closes by condensing
the theoretical and practical contribution of the research and providing an outlook on the
potential development of the research field of
