THE GENUS
BETULA
Birches, with their white barks, are among the most
attractive and common trees in the landscape and in
gardens. Unfortunately, naming even the common
white barked birches can be difficult and many wrongly
named trees can be found in nurseries and arboreta.
Many species are known for their autumn colour,
including a major contribution to the fall colour in
eastern North America.
This book provides accounts of all known birches,
both white and brown barked, and a key for their
identification. The extensive fossil record and recent
molecular work are reviewed and, together with
new data not previously published, used to provide
information for a discussion of what can be deduced
of the evolutionary relationships of the species and
species groups. From our experience of growing and
propagating almost all species, accounts are given of the
cultivation requirements and landscape use of the species.
BOTANICAL MAGAZINE MONOGRAPHS
The Botanical Magazine Monograph series was
introduced by Kew in
2002
to re-establish the art and
expertise of publishing definitive plant monographs.
Based on the tradition established by Curtis s Botanical
Magasine,
the aim of the series is to blend knowledge on
research, cultivation and conservation of garden plants.
Each volume provides the reader with a comprehensive
guide to a particular group of plants that is authoritative
and accessible.
The monographs are written by experts in their field,
edited by world-leading horticulturalists and botanists,
and are lavishly illustrated by the finest botanical artists.
This makes the series influential and highly desirable to
all those who love and nurture our garden plant heritage.
Other monographs include Die Genus Epimedium, Tfie
Genus
Lavanàiãa,
Tlie
Genus Sorbus,
Tlie
Genus Roscoea,
Tłie
Genus
Jasmínům
in Cultivation, Hardy Heathers from the
Northern Hemisphere, and The Genus Lachenalia.
Interpreting what can be observed in living plants is at the heart
of this work. Therefore, the visual aspect has played a very
important part in this
taxonomie
study, which has been written
with horticulturalists and conservationists as well as scientists and
interested plant enthusiasts in mind.
In equal measure six individuals have taken the utmost care
to ensure that this record of birches is as accurate a description of
the genus as is possible for the present state of knowledge. For this
reason, similar recognition is given to each for their contribution to
this monograph:
Kenneth Ashburner
(1927-2010)
gained a BSc in Horticulture
at Wye College in
1951,
and after a short period teaching Botany
he joined Span Developments, a company of landscape architects.
After his marriage to June in
1968
he embarked on the study
of
Betitla
and Almis at Stone Farm, Chagford, Devon, travelling
widely in Korea, Russia, Germany, France, Canada, Japan, the
Himalaya and the US to pursue his passion for these two genera.
In
1971
Stone Lane Gardens was created. His specialist arboretum
was awarded National Collection status for both wild origin birch
and alder in
1994.
Hugh McAllister graduated in Botany from Glasgow University
in
1966
and gained a PhD in cytotaxonomy in
1972.
For twenty
years he was Deputy Director of University of Liverpool Botanic
Garden (Ness) until
1997
when he became a lecturer in the School
of Biological Sciences at Liverpool until retirement in
2010.
He is
the author of the Botanical Magazine Monograph on Sorbm.
Andrew Brown read Botany at Oxford and undertook research
for his PhD in Quaternary vegetational history at Cambridge. He
taught biology in two independent schools for thirty years before
becoming a freelance botanical illustrator working mainly for the
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He has been awarded four Gold
Medals from the Royal Horticultural Society for his botanical
illustrations.
Josephine Hague graduated in Textile Design from Liverpool
College of Art in
1949.
She became a commercial illustrator in
1979,
specialising in botanical drawing from
1981
onwards. Widely
published and exhibited, in both the UK and abroad, her awards
include the Large International Gold Medal, RHS Gold Medals
and the Silver Gilt Lindley Medal.
Maggie Williams graduated in Geology from Leicester University
in
1971
and gained a PhD in Earth Science in
2003.
In recent
years her main geological research has focused on hiatal surfaces
and stratigraphy and she is currently a university recognised teacher
&
research assistant in the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences
at Liverpool University. She is a keen photographer and a Founder
of the Carrifan
Wildwood.
Peter Williams graduated in Physics from Birmingham
University in
1967,
and in
1988
gained an Open University
degree in Mathematics. He is currently a university recognised
teacher
&
research assistant in the Department of Earth and Ocean
Sciences at Liverpool University. He has been taking photographs
for over
30
years and is a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic
Society (LRPS).
