Towns are an integral part of a settlement structure, social, economic and cultural life
of any people the knowledge of which facilitates proper understanding of historical progress.
Medieval towns provided sociological and economic factors for rise and development of new
relations in all spheres of life of urban and rural communities. Respectively, the history of
Kamianets-Podilsky in the

centuries is a unique example. It was the time when
the town was an important centre of craft, trade, culture development and town building
process in the Right-Bank Ukraine; it was the political and administrative centre of Podillia
voivodeship (in
1672-1699 -
of Turkish administrative district), of Kamianets district area,
served a fortification outpost of Podillia region etc.
Although considerable amount of research has been devoted to the time of its foundation,
certain aspects of town structure, development of economics, communities, architecture,
fortification etc., some urgent problems of complicated demographic, ethnic and social
processes, relations within ethnic communities and between them, peculiarities of town s self-
government and castle management, town building standards, historical topography, crafts,
manufacture and trade remain unclear. They constitute the object of the present research.
The monograph uses different sources: printed books, manuscripts, graphs, maps, iconography,
archeological findings which are stored in archives, scientific libraries and museums in Ukraine,
Poland and Russia. It is the first time that some of them have been referred to. Remnants of
architectural constructions as elements of material culture and historical landscape have been
used, too.
Kamianets has been found out to consist of the city, the castle and suburbs. By the time of
the Polish conquest in the 30-ies of the 15th cent, both local (Ukrainian) and Western European
impacts intertwined in the town structure. They influenced the formation of urban social and
economic centres, street pavement, defence constructions which went on developing in the
following centuries. Coexistence of three ethnic groups resulted in the separation of their
residence with peculiar quarters, streets, social, administrative and religious centres. Thus a
unique social and national topography appeared. Urban forms (market squares, fortifications,
churches etc.) used to be symbols of ideas of the universe structure characteristic of city
dwellers, reflected essence of culture, self-consciousness and social being. In particular, a
castle was viewed as centre of social (first of all, royal) authority, a church was a sanctuary
and clergy power support, a town hall represented self-government, a stone building signified
patrician s welfare and his high social status, a house used to be a burgher s property and so on.
The study of demographic processes clarified the factors supporting their dynamics. It led
to the conclusion that during the 15th- 18th cent. Kamianets belonged to the category of large
towns not only in Ukraine but in the Central and Western Europe as well.
Coexistence of different ethnic communities made a powerful impact on the legal norms,
way of life, religiousness and social medium. Besides common interests, each town council
(Ukrainian, Armenian, Polish) represented and supported its own citizens interests grounded
on their privileges, mentality, ethnic traditions, belief, legal norms and proceedings. The norms
of the Magdeburg law every community possessed were different while the town was a part
of Poland. They were limited for the Ukrainian and Armenian communities. The Ukrainians
happened to be oppressed as aliens in their Motherland. In
1670
their self-government was
cancelled, in
1703
the united Polish-Ukrainian town-council was formed where the Poles
dominated. The same happened to the Armenian community in
1790.

In the town administration, the specific function was performed by the castle authorities,
particularly, by its head and government. Besides regulating the relations between the
inhabitants of state settlements of Podillia voivodeship, it controlled the town authorities
with frequent intrusions into all spheres of the town life.
Kamianets turned into one of the largest centres of trade, crafts and business in Ukraine
and Eastern Europe during the 16th
-
early 17th cent. As far as the town was situated on the
crossroads of trade routes connecting Eastern European countries with the oriental ones, it
was famous for its fairs, markets, stocks etc. as well as its influence on transit trade.
The town crafts were prospering. They used to spring from guilds which numbered

cent.: smiths, potters, butchers, shoemakers etc. They carried out their
business according to statutes. Kamianets was a popular place for apprenticeship among
young people from other cities of Ukraine, as well as Poland, Moldova, Wallachia etc. Town
guilds had been successfully functioning by early 20th cent. Produce processing industry was
most widespread alongside with mining (stone quarries, brickyards, limestone quarries and so
on). Cabmen, work-hands and other labourers outside the guilds constituted their spheres of
business, too. They predominantly functioned as dependant on private property, competition
and wage labour.
The picture of Kamianets society included town land ownership and agricultural
occupation of its population. The town got land property in
1373
as soon as the Koriatovyches
granted the Magdeburg law to it. Living conditions made the citizens work the land thus
possessing a considerable area of agricultural neighbourhood. It is notable that the organs of the
town self-government and castle administration owned some land and kept it independently.
Representatives of different social strata could make use of land; principles of law depended
on their social status. In the
Í8lh
cent., the so-called movement towards land was distinct as
land itself was turning into a crucial factor of social prestige. Struggle between rich townsmen
and peasants for land property followed this process.
Sources reconstruct the architectural, historical and topographic look of the city which
has been preserved up to the present and goes on impressing its citizens and guests as an
invaluable masterpiece of cultural heritage of Ukraine and Central and Eastern Europe.
