Poems to HIsi brings together for the first time the
full range of Thomas s poems to his wife, the distinguished painter
Mildred E. Eldridge
(1909-1991).
Spanning fifty years of married life (which, for many, appeared to be
a curious exercise in cohabitation rather than a passionate union), the
poems have been arranged so as to give a sense of those patterns of
intimacy, reserve, recrimination and grief by which a long partnership
is sustained and memorialised. From ironic and playful modes that
dissect the gaps and boundaries between husband and wife to an
astonishing directness and a limpid lyricism that reveal the depth of
the poet s regard, these poems are written for, about and with an eye
(often obliquely) on a woman, wife, mother and creative artist who
appears throughout as a compelling presence in absence. They are
verbal acts that shore up love against the tyranny of a world in
/
servitude to time*.
Deeply moving, astringent and shocking by turns, Poems to E/si, which
includes two hitherto unpublished works, foregrounds an aspect of
Thomas not previously recognised. At the same time, it offers a new-
lens through which to re-read, and recognise anew, the great meta¬
physical poetry that is in so many ways intimately related to the
spousal meditations collected in this revelatory volume.
