Buddhist Kingdom, Marxist State
examines the history and politics of
modern Laos from its establishment as a French colony in the late
nineteenth century to the communist state it is today. While the first
three chapters outline the struggle between France and Thailand for
control over the territory of the present Lao state, the period of French
administration, and the difficulties encountered by the Kingdom of Laos
and its leaders between
1946
and
1975,
the primary focus is on the Lao
People's Democratic Republic.
Themes taken up include the leadership of the Lao revolutionary
movement, the strategy adopted to legitimize the transition from Buddhist
kingdom to Marxist state, and the way in which the communist regime
first reduced the Buddhist monastic order to a pliant instrument in its
monopolization of power, before allowing its slow resurgence as a core
cultural institution. Other chapters examine how the regime was frustrated
in its attempt to carry though its policy of agricultural cooperativization,
the close relationship between Laos and Vietnam, and the failures and
successes of the Lao revolution. How the politics of patronage have
returned in present-day Laos, and how Lao foreign relations have taken
account of the changing international situation are also given attention.
Finally the last two chapters weigh up the role of the ruling Lao People's
Revolutionary Party and assess the future of Laos in the rapidly
integrating region of mainland Southeast Asia.
Martin Stuart-Fox is one of the foremost scholars writing on
contemporary Lao history and politics. An Australian, he worked in Laos
in the
1960s
first for the United States Agency for International
Development (USAID) and then as a correspondent for United Press
International
(UPI).
He subsequently covered events for
UPI in
Vietnam,
France, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Since
1976
when he joined the
History Department of the University of Queensland, Martin Stuart-Fox
has returned regularly to monitor political change in the Lao People's
Democratic Republic. The author of six books and numerous articles on
Laos, his years of research form the basis for this penetrating study of
the making of modern Laos.
