The fourth issue, like the previous ones, mainly relies on archive sources:
family and in-house paperwork
(Galina
Kopytova); documents from wartime
and publisher s archives
(Olga
Digonskaya); Shostakovich s letters
(Olga
Digonskaya and Maria Karachevskaya), his author s manuscripts and hand¬
written manuscripts by other people (Lidiya
Ader,
Galina
Kopytova,
Olga
Digonskaya,
Ludmilla
Kovnatskaya, and YurySemyonov). Drawings by Boris
Kustodiyev that music experts previously knew little about were also used in
the research (Lidiya
Ader).
In addition to the new information, this issue also reveals unexpected
interpretations of already well-known facts.
The articles are arranged in chronological order. They consecutively
set forth and acquaint the reader with the St. Petersburg addresses of the
Shostakovich-Kokoulin family
(Galina
Kopytova); the people Shostakovich
was friendly with in his youth (Lidiya
Ader);
a few of his compositions from
the conservatory period
(Galina
Kopytova); his new interpretations of the
Second Symphony
(Svetlana Savenko);
and the numerous productions
(Galina
Kopytova) and one non-production
(Olga
Digonskaya) of the opera Lady
Macbeth. They also shed new light on the music dialogue between Shostakovich
and Hindemith
(Ludmilla
Kovnatskaya), possible nuances of the Finnish
context in Shostakovich s
oeuvre
of the end of the lOeOs-beginning of the
1940s (Olga
Digonskaya), and the Karelian context of his Finnish Suite
(Vera
Nuova).
The most recent articles are devoted to the composer s correspondence
in the
1960s
with writer
Galina Serebryakova
(Maria Karachevskaya) and two
different editions, of the
1960s-1970s,
of his
Passacaglia
(Yury Semyonov).
Despite the many different perspectives and research methods employed
in composing the texts (from topographic to ethnographic), the articles in
the fourth issue are thematically coordinated and form their own particular
micro cycles.
