CONCLUSION
During the
XIX
century millions of Europeans striving for
a better life were leaving their homes and native countries and
headed for the North American continent, thus becoming cre¬
ators of a phenomena that puts migration at the very top of
scientific interest and research. USA became the main goal of
those migratory waves. The massive scope of migration that
swept across whole regions of Europe and directed this mi¬
gration towards America, with America s specific political,
economic and cultural attraction, making America the top
world immigration country and, consequently, making these
migration waves the topic of primary scientific studies.
Demographers, economists, anthropologists, sociologists
and, finally, historians, started their studies focusing, at first,
at forces that stood behind this massive and continuous exo¬
dus. These studies came out with the conclusion that the mass
migrations from Europe in the
XIX
century were an accelerat¬
ing process that spread as a huge wave throughout Europe
and was the result of economic-demographic changes taking
place in Europe of that time. Rapid growth of population,
the fast pace of industrialization that from the very roots was
transforming European society, but at the same time was not
sufficient to absorb the surplus of the working force, changes
in agricultural conditions that made landless a vast propor¬
tion of peasantry thus stripping them from their only liveli¬
hood
-
all these factors summed up into an existential need to
seek personal happiness somewhere else.
Regional specific features, political reasons and personal
aspirations completed the picture that describes the causes of
migration. America was that other pole offering political and

religious freedoms, plenty of arable land for the newly arrived
colonists, an open chance for success, both material and the
one on the social ladder, enough reasons why the vast major¬
ity of European emigres opted for America.
The migration phenomena and the search for the American
dream swept also through all the different Yugoslav lands.
Peoples of the Yugoslav geographic realm, by the end of the
XIX
century, became part of these migratory movements, i.e.
part of this new migration. Compared to the older and earlier
migrations this new wave was not after arable land, but rather
flocked in factory halls and mining pits, i.e. the newest wave of
emigres did not leave Europe to become part of the American
society, but after several years and with earned savings went
back to their countries of origin. These new migratory waves
-
coming from South, East and South-East of Europe
-
by sheer
number outnumbers the older generation of immigrants, and
by its character represents a new emigre experience. Effects of
this change of character of European emigration will be quick¬
ly felt on the other side of the ocean. Turmoils in Europe
1914-
1918,
the appearance of communism, national antagonisms,
but also the more than visible lack of benevolence greeting the
newly arrived Europeans, contributed to a new immigration
policy staring with the end of World War I, a new policy that
finally ends the free for all entry to the United States, and thus
the migration becomes a world wide controlled process. This
applies as well to potential emigres from the Yugoslav regions
including the newly founded Yugoslav state.
Emigration to America, thus, had to follow new rules; new
in the country of emigration, new in America, the country of
immigration. There was no more mass migration to America.
Instead of tens of thousands of immigrants that once disem¬
barked at American shores, now only several hundreds yearly
succeeded to reach the once promised land for all. However,
this weak flow of immigrants continued somehow. Now in

the
period
between the two world wars the emigration/im¬
migration process came under state regulations and state ap¬
pointed bodies and with a lot of bureaucratic obstacles. In
short, to obtain all the necessary papers
-
both in the country
of origin and from the American immigration authorities
-
be¬
came a heroic deed. Immense red-tape and often insurmount¬
able hurdles were forcing many emigrants to seek and find
another way to reach America, namely an illegal and often
risky way. Reaching America no matter how became a worthy
prize.
The profile of the emigrants has changed drastically. The
new emigrants differed completely from the pre-war emi¬
grants. Earlier immigrants were mostly men in full strength
and a significant percent of their number would go back to
the country of origin after working and saving for a number
of years. That trend ended, mostly because of new American
immigration regulations that sharply cut down the admission
of immigrants and, on the other hand, the immigration be¬
came a one-way-street linking up separated family members.
Thus these newest immigrants were wives,
fiancées,
children
and other close relatives permitted to come to America and
join their kin already established in the United States. This
reunion of families brought a basic change in immigration:
instead of staying temporarily the immigrants were now com¬
ing to America to stay for good.
Once in America, these latest comers were quickly becom¬
ing members of already existing immigrant colonies, joining
organizations that had specific and visible signs in terms of
nationality, culture, religion etc. At the same time the new¬
comers were under the influence of the American background
that inevitably brought changes in evryday life, influencing
all aspects of life from language and attire to family relation¬
ships and changing habits. The already existing rather closed
colonies based on national entities were helpful for the new-

comers in achieving a smoother and faster adaptation to a
new life, but it was also a setback as it meant an isolation from
the broader American surroundings.
