Marital
connections
of the
Wielkopolska
magnates
in the second half of the 14th and first half of the 15th centuries
Summary
The book is based on two interlinked and
complementary research approaches found in
studies into the problem of marriages. The first
of those, which can be called genealogical,
stresses the great significances of family ties in
public life and seeks to recreate coition-based
ties linking specific representatives of the power
and wealth elite at the time. It is represented
mainly by studies dealing with families of im¬
portant public life figures and paying greater
attention to close relatives on the distaff side,
or studies focused on recreating marriage-based
ties. Another approach to marital connections is
represented by studies devoted to the national
and regional elites, studies which also cover ge¬
nealogical relationships. They result in a body
of knowledge concerning coition-based ties,
which leads to more general conclusions con¬
cerning the practice of spouse selection and the
role of marriages in the ftinctioning of the popu¬
lation in question. Unlike in the genealogical
approach, in this approach reconstructing the
connection is not an end in itself but one of the
means to an end
--
getting to know the various
mechanisms of the ftinctioning of social elites.
The present book, on the other hand, is an at¬
tempt to combine these two approaches. The
aim is not so much to develop a new third way
to study marriage-based ties, but, rather, to pro¬
vide a comprehensive approach to problems,
which hitherto have been dispersed among vari¬
ous works dealing with the topic, and to submit
new research suggestions. What can be regard¬
ed as a novelty here is a view on marriages from
the perspective of not so much the magnates as
a social class and its group interests but, prima¬
rily, from the perspective of the magnate family
and the family policy pursued by it and involv¬
ing marriages of its members. Conclusions are
drawn from observations made during studies
into selected families over a period of their his¬
tory encompassing several generations.
The subject of the research presented in
the book is marital connections of the magnates
from the
Wielkopolska
region (covering the
Wielkopolska
region proper, i.e. the
Poznań
and
the
Kalisz
palatinates) in the second half of the
14th and first half of the
1
5th centuries. In Polish
historiography the term magnates denotes the
upper layer of the nobility. Given the fact that
in Poland the magnates did not constitute a for¬
mally separate group within the nobility, it was
necessary for the present author to assume some
specific criteria making it possible to make such
a distinction. As the objective was to specify
not a group of individuals making up the mag¬
nate class but a group of families in this class,
the criterion of holding high-level land offices
proved particularly useful. When such offices
were held by members of a family over several
successive generations (with a break of no more
than one generation), this meant that the family
belonged to the magnate group. This criterion
combined with information about the
Wielko¬
polska
magnates to be found in the current lit¬
erature on the subject determined the selection

Summary
of eleven
Wielkopolska
families: the lords of
Dębno
and
Niezamyśl
as well as the lords of
Kępa
and
Rozdrażew
from the Doliwa family;
the
Bniński
family and the lords of
Stęszew
and
Koźmin Wielki
from the
Łodzią
family;
the
Nałęcz
family (the Czarnkowskis, the Os-
trorógs
and the
Szamoťulskis);
the Danaborski
family and the lords of
Wąsocz
and Szubin from
the
Pałuki
family; the
Wezenborg
family (the
Tur
coat of arms); and the lords of
Królików,
Żerków
and
Sławsko
from the
Zaręba
family.
Relationships by marriage established by mem¬
bers of these families became the subject of sys¬
tematic genealogical research.
The source base for the research consisted,
first of all, of documents published in the
Kodeks
dyplomatyczny Wielkopolski
and of entries from
district and town registers from the
Wielkopol¬
ska
region. When it comes to the latter, only the
oldest registers have been published in print.
The remaining documents are available in man¬
uscript form in the State Archives in
Poznań.
The author examined, in a systematic manner,
the manuscript registers from the first half of the
1
5th century and, additionally, went through the
registers for the second half of the 15th century.
He also analysed selected church archives. The
archive material for the second half of the 15th
and the early
1
6th centuries is complemented by
Włodzimierz
Dworzaczek s regests of district
and town registers available in electronic form.
With regard to the source base, we should also
point to valuable information that can be found
in
Słownik historyczno-geograficzny wojewódz¬
twa poznańskiego w średniowieczu
{Historical-
Geographical Dictionary of the
Poznań
Palati¬
nate in the Middle Ages) as well as the material
collected in the Institute of History of the Polish
Academy of Sciences in
Poznań
(files related
to the Historical-Geographical Dictionary of
Wielkopolska
in the Middle Ages).
The source material was then analysed by
the author, a process that led to conclusions
presented in the two chapters constituting the
main part of the book. The first of them, entitled
Marital connections of selected magnate fami¬
lies from the
Wielkopolska
region, is primarily
genealogical in nature. It mainly contains in¬
formation about the daughters and wives from
these selected eleven families set against the
general history of these families. This dispro¬
portion can be justified by the fact that so far
historiography has dealt mainly with careers
of men. That is why there is no need to repeat
this type of information; what is undoubtedly
required is more light shed on these men s
wives and daughters
—
usually neglected until
recently
—
as well as families from which they
came or which they entered upon marriage. The
author s research has made it possible to expand
the information about the female members of
the analysed families. This concerns primarily
less important families or lineages, though not
only them. Thus, for example, the
Poznań
cas¬
tellan,
Moście
of
Stęszewo,
in addition to Bar¬
bara, Anna and
Beata
had one more daughter,
whose name is unknown and who married
Rafał
of
Gołuchów
from the Wieniawa family. The
palatine of
Poznań, Sędziwoj Ostroróg,
in ad¬
dition to
Sędka
had another daughter, Burneta,
who married
Piotr
of
Kurów
from the Szrenia-
wa family. The daughters of the palatine of
Ka¬
lisz, Marcin
of
Sławsko,
included
—
in addition
to
Elżbieta, Jachna
and
Małgorzata
—
Anna,
who first married Czambor of
Wyrzysk
and
Dobieszew (the
Rogala
coat of arms) and then
Michał
of
Lubstów
(the
Laska
coat of arms). In
many cases it has proved possible to establish
family lineages of the wives and to correct some
of the opinions on the matter presented in the
literature so far. For obvious reasons, the cor¬
rections apply to more important figures. Thus,
Elżbieta,
wife of the
Gniezno
castellan,
Piotr
of
Bnin, was not a daughter of the
Śrem
castellan,
Wojciech
of
Pakość
—
as is suggested in his
biographical entry
—
but a daughter of the pala¬
tine of
Inowrocław
and then of
Brzesko, Maciej
of
Łabiszyn.
Barbara, daughter of
Mroczek
of
Łopuchów,
recently attributed to castellan
Pi¬
otr
as his second wife, was in fact the wife of
his nephew, also named
Piotr,
who became the
steward of
Kalisz
and then castellan of
Lędzko.
The second wife of the
Poznań
castellan
Moście
of
Stęszew,
the little known
Małgorzata,
was a
daughter of
Sędziwoj
of Mokronos and
Jaroc¬
in
from the
Bogoria
family. Jachna of Cienin,
who was associated with the palatine of
Kalisz,
Marcin
of
Sławsko,
as his first wife, was in fact
the wife of his cousin,
Marcin
of
Królikowo.
Some of the author s conclusions included in
Summary
425
this chapter have already been presented in his
other academic papers. All source information
about the circumstances of the analysed mar¬
riages has been presented as well whenever
possible.
The research has also led to the reconstruc¬
tion of the genealogies of the analysed families
—
in some cases hitherto absent from the litera¬
ture on the subject
—
or has introduced some
changes into what we know about them. This
information is presented in an annex at the end
of the book.
The second chapter is entitled Spouse se¬
lection practice of magnate families in
Wielko¬
polska.
The conclusions presented in it are
based on the analysis of family ties presented
in the previous chapter. In order to carry out a
quantitative and qualitative analysis, the author
has also taken into account marital connections
of the
Iwieński (Grzymała)
family, presented in
Adam Szweda s monograph devoted to it. In to¬
tal, the analysed population numbers
169
indi¬
viduals, including
70
women
(41 %)
and
99
men
(59%).
Two of the women entered a convent.
With regard to the others, it has been possible
to trace
68
marriages. The origins of their hus¬
bands are known nearly in their entirety. Among
the
99
men,
6
chose a career in the church. The
number of marriages entered into by the other
men is
99.
In the case of
50
of them
(51%)
we
can be certain about the origin of the wives, for
15 (15%)
it has been established hypotheti
cal
ly,
while for
34 (34%)
it remains unknown.
The analysis of the spouse selection prac¬
tice in this population is based on an assumption
that it was a type of social behaviour (action),
which was not only deliberate but one the objec¬
tive of which and its pursuit was influenced by
socio-cultural
factors (determinants) and con¬
formed to a specific pattern (patterns) charac¬
teristic of a given social environment in a given
period. A pattern is understood here as a for¬
mula of typical ways of actual behaviour com¬
mon within a given social group . Thus, it is
about pointing to certain regularities in choos¬
ing a wife or a husband, regularities occurring
in the social practice of the selected group of
families, and pointing to factors that determined
them.
Given such an approach to the practice, it
has proved useful to distinguish three planes
within it. It must be noted, however, that this
is a technical operation, for in reality all the
issues were closely interlinked and influenced
each other. The first plane is determined by
issues concerning the circumstances in which
a husband or a wife was selected. This covers
questions about the scale of marriages includ¬
ing the frequency of remarriage, freedom to
choose a husband or a wife, age at which the
first marriage was entered into as well as the
participation of third parties and their role in
matchmaking and making a marriage happen.
The author s research has shown that in the ana¬
lysed population marriage was a common and
dominant pattern of behaviour among men and
women belonging to the laity. Among the group
of
93
men it has been impossible to confirm
marriage for only
5
of them, though it is highly
likely that this is not a result of these men re¬
maining bachelors but of these men dying fairly
early, before entering into marriage, or a result
of the fact that no information about their wives
has been preserved. Similarly, among the
68
women no information about a marriage has
been found for only
8
of them. The popularity
of marriage in this group can also be seen in the
high frequency of remarriage, especially among
the men. Over
80%
of those who were widowed
married again. In the case of the women, less
than one quarter of widows remarried. When re¬
marrying, widows were relatively free to choose
their husbands, though we should take into ac¬
count the fact that their second marriages might
also have been connected with marital policies
of their original families or the families of their
first husbands. In the case of first marriages of
women, husbands were chosen by their fathers
or legal guardians. Similar restrictions were also
imposed on men when their marriages were de¬
cided during their minority. Usually, first mar¬
riages were entered into very early, mostly from
the age of capacity till the age of
20
for women
and till a slightly later age by men. It is worth
stressing the relatively common marriages in
Wielkopolska
of women who were barely over
12
and men who did not marry until they were
about
30
years old. When it comes to people in¬
volved in matchmaking, worthy of note is the
fact that some marriages were based on the
al-
426
Summary
ready existing family ties. Ties once established
between families were continued among mem¬
bers of the same generation and/or successive
generation or generations, also including blood
relatives and relatives by marriage. The efforts
of blood relatives and relatives by marriage to
further strengthen or revive these ties by ar¬
ranging other marriages seem to have led to
the emergence of a potential selection pool in
which people looked for spouses for themselves
or their children.
The second plane of the spouse selection
practice refers to a kind of socio-culrural frame¬
work determining the potential boundaries of
the area where a spouse was looked for ( mar¬
riage market ). They were defined by marriage-
related legal regulations, and social conventions
or preferences within the social group from
which the parties to be connected came. They
were associated not with individual needs and
interests of these parties but with collective
needs as well as values and norms governing
the functioning of wider society to which the
parties belonged.
When it comes to legal regulations, we
should point mainly to the provisions of canon
law concerning consanguinity-related impedi¬
ments to marriage and their observance in lay
practice. In this respect, observations of the ana¬
lysed group have led to conclusions confirming
the current position presented in the literature
on the subject. There were no marriages be¬
tween people within the first and second degree
of consanguinity; marriages between third-de¬
gree relatives were also avoided. On the other
hand, we can find marriages between fourth-
degree relatives. The situation was similar in
the case of impediments associated with kinship
by marriage.
Social conventions and preferences should
be primarily referred to the social and territorial
scope of spouse selection. The basic criterion
defining the social scope of selection was class
equality and equality of social and financial sta¬
tus of the bride and the groom (endogamy and
homogamy). With regard to the first principle,
there are really no marriages between classes
within the analysed group of families. The only
exception here is the marriage of
Piotr Świdwa
of
Szamotuły,
whose wife on her mother s side
came from a burgher family. However, this
case is only indirectly linked to the analysed
phenomenon. Thus, we can speak of a relative
unwillingness of
Wielkopolska
magnates to es¬
tablish family relations with burghers. The mag¬
nates were more open to marriages with mem¬
bers of the middle nobility, who were lower than
themselves in terms of social rank and wealth. If
we analyse the total number of such marriages,
which connected the families in question with
the middle nobility, we will see that they con¬
stituted about
56%
of all marriages for which it
has been possible to establish, either certainly or
hypothetically, the lineage of either the hus¬
band or the wife. Taking into account these data
as well as findings made during the analysis
of the circumstances surrounding the various
marriages, we can generally conclude that the
Wielkopolska
magnates treated families from
the middle nobility as comparable to them on
the marriage market in terms of their status.
This can be seen in the coexistence of ties with
families of equal and lower social standing.
This state of affairs was mainly due to the fact
that a marriage was ultimately determined by
the goals which could be achieved thanks to it.
Depending on the goal in question, it could be
achieved thanks to a union with a magnate or
middle
nobility
family.
The boundaries of the marriage market
were also determined by the territorial scope of
spouse selection. In the analysed group wives or
husbands would be looked for first of all within
the
Wielkopolska
region proper. Marital ties
between noble families (magnates and middle
nobility) from this region made up nearly
3/4
(73.6%)
of the total number of marriages for
which it has been possible to establish
—
in a
certain or hypothetical manner
—
the lineage of
the spouses. Among other marriages, with mem¬
bers of families from outside
Wielkopolska,
the
dominant group is made up of marriages with
representatives of families from
Kujawy
(9.4%)
and
Małopolska
(8.6%).
This considerable pre¬
dominance of marriages entered into within the
spouses own region should not, however, be
explained
—
as some scholars tend to do
—
by
the sense of territorial community (local com¬
munity) making people prefer us over stran¬
gers territorially speaking. To a large extent
Summary
427
it resulted from the status of a family and the
related possibilities of operating on the mar¬
riage market . Families who established marital
ties with families from outside the
Wielkopol¬
ska
region included primarily the
Pałukis
of
Wąsosz
and Szubin, the
Nałęczs (Szamotulskis
and
Ostrorógs) or
the
Zarębas
of
Królików
and
Sławsko.
These were families whose members
not only held the highest offices in the region
but were also important players on the na¬
tional political stage. On the other hand, there
are very few or no such ties in the case of the
Doliwa families, the
Nałęczs
of
Czarnków
or
the
Łodzią
family of Bnin, whose stature and
scope of activities in the analysed region were
mainly local. The greater the wealth and scope
of public-political activity, the broader the terri¬
torial scope of the marriage market on which
a family could look for wives for its sons or hus¬
bands for its daughters. It should be noted that
families able to operate on a broader marriage
market also established marital ties with fami¬
lies within their own region. As was the case
with the social scope, the choice of a spouse was
ultimately determined by the goals which were
to be achieved by the marriage. Depending on
its goals, a family would look for a suitable wife
or husband among local families or outside its
own region.
The third plane of the spouse selection
analysis concerns the motives behind the choice
of particular spouses. In comparison to the pre¬
vious plane, which has a kind of structural di¬
mension, this plane has a more individualised
and opportunistic dimension, and is associated
with the notion of marital policy (strategy). It
should also be associated with the notion of
family policy or strategy, which encompasses a
variety of actions related to the staying power
and social reconstruction of the family, includ¬
ing its wealth. These actions included marriage,
which was dictated by individual interests and
needs of the families about to become related.
The author distinguishes three general cat¬
egories of motives, drawing on the existing dis¬
cussion in the literature on the subject, in refer¬
ence to which he examines the motives guiding
the analysed magnates from the
Wielkopolska
region in their choice of spouses. Thus, there
are social motives associated with marriage be¬
ing used primarily to move up the social ladder
and strengthen one s position in the social hier¬
archy, social motives linked to the role of mar¬
riage as a social alliance, and economic motives
linked to marriage being used as a means to
gain wealth. What should be stressed immedi¬
ately is the fact that this distinction is to a large
extent technical, for in practice these categories
of motives were often interlinked. In addition,
motives from each category were to be found
—
in varying degrees and proportions
—
in the
various marriages entered into by members of
the analysed group of families. The clearest and
most visible among them were wealth-related
motives, which can be attributed to over one-
third of the marriages entered into by men for
whom it is possible to ascertain the family back¬
ground of the wives. This group of relationships
is dominated largely by marriages to heiresses
of landed estates. Their size varied from estates
encompassing a dozen or so villages to just sev¬
eral villages or hamlets or their parts. It must be
noted that the economic aspect was present in
all marriages. Regardless of the basis of a mar¬
riage, it was always accompanied by financial
agreements concerning the size of the dowry
and the trousseau, which the woman brought to
her husband s family. An analysis of the avail¬
able information concerning dowries has shown
that in the first half of the 15th century the sums
usually did not exceed
400-500
grzywnas.
Larger dowries resulted from the fact that the
women inherited landed estates from their fa¬
thers or mothers. Quite often the amounts paid
were within the range of
100-200
grzywnas.
They constituted about a half of all confirmed
dowries brought by the wives of
Wielkopolska
magnates in the analysed period.
To conclude, it is worth stressing that ul¬
timately marriage, which was often a means
for a family to achieve specific goals, was at
the same time an end in itself. In the case of
men, marriage was first of all dictated by the
need to continue their family. In the absence of
a male heir, all efforts to strengthen or raise the
family s financial or social status were doomed
to failure. On the other hand, there was a com¬
mon belief that daughters and sisters should be
