History of the Institute of Geography
at the Lvov University in the years
1883—1939
Summary
Two oldest Polish geographical research centres were established under Austrian rule,
at Cracow and Lvov Universities, in the second half of XIXth century, Cracow Institute
of Geography has maintained at the Jagiellonian University until nowadays» Much
more complicated was the history of the Institute of Geography of the Lvov University,
influenced considerably by the complicated political situation of Eastern
Galicia
and
the difficult relations between Poles and Ukrainians, concerning the character of this
University. The Institute of Geography at the University of Lvov, as Polish research
centre, lasted
56
years, during the
1883—1939
period, until the year when Lvov stopped
to be within the borders of Poland. The role of the Lvov Institute of Geography for
the development of Polish geography cannot be overestimated. Nevertheless, there is
no study concerning the history of this Institute from the partition period, through
years of the World War I and an interwar period, that of independent Poland. Lvov
University research centre on geography has developed for these
56
years independen¬
tly rather.
In
1874
first effort was made to create the Chair of Geography at the Lvov Univer¬
sity. It took another eight years for
Antoni
Rehman to become professor of geography:
until Ist, January
1883.
This was the formal beginning of the Chair (Institute) of Geog¬
raphy at Lvov University. It was the second university chair of geography established
on the territory of former Poland, because
Wincenty
Pol was the head of the first chair
in the period
1849—1852
at Jagiellonian University in Cracow. That Chair was reacti¬
vated in
1877
and prof.
Franciszek
Szwarcenberg-Czerny, historian, became its head.
Both the chairs of geography, those in Cracow and Lvov, started to operate in relatively
good
politicai
circumstances, because
Galicja
(the Austrian part of partitioned Poland,

1918 period) had gained a limited autonomy in
1868.
It is worth to mention
that University in Lvov had a very long history dating back, to the reign of Polish
king,
Jan Kazimierz.
On 20th January, 1661, the Lvov Jesuit collegium was transformed
into the Academy and since that year this school began to use the name „university .
The history of this university was very changeable, sometimes dramatic. The university
has been modernized and reached European standards since
1871*
In that year, the
Austrian University in Lvov, named after Franz Josef, was reformed and Polish was
allowed to be a language of instruction.
Prof. A, Rehman
—
biologist, traveller and an author of the book
Ziemie dawnej
polski
(vol.
i
Karpty vol.
2
Niżowa Polska ),
had been also the head of the Institute
of Geography in Lvov for
28
years
(1883—
1910). Despite very modest office space and
limited funds, he had created an institute, in which were educated numerous students.
Among these graduates were famous Polish scientists and geographers, i.e.
Eugeni¬
usz
Romer,
Walery
Łoziński,
Stefan
Rudnički
and
Stanisław Pawłowski.
In Rehman s
Institute Poles, Ukrainians, Austrians and Jews studied geography; nationality did not
matter at all. The research field of in the Institute was very broad, covering physical
geography, regional geography, ethnography, history of geography and teaching. In the
cartographical workshop very innovative maps were made. Of
13
people, who obtained
doctor degrees in geography, the first one was
Grzegorz Wełyczko
(a Ukrainian) and
the second one
—
Eugeniusz
Romer,
who obtained doctor s degree in
1894,
presenting
the dissertation
Studia nad rozkładem ciepła na kuli ziemskiej .
Under the supervi¬
sion of Prof. A. Rehman, two doctors
—
E. Romer
in
1899
and S.
Rudnički
in
1908
obtained the postdoctoral teaching qualifications
(habilitation),
venta
legendi
(the right
to teach at the University), but formerly in the Institute they were worked as volunteers.
The language of teaching was Polish, but some lectures were also given in Ukrainian,
i.e. those by S.
Rudnički.
E, Romer
gave lectures on physical geography, regional geog¬
raphy and cartography. At that time, he has already written some
80
papers. In
1908,
E. Romer
became the associate professor. In 1911, after A. Rehman s retirement, Prof.
E. Romer,
one of the most outstanding Polish geographers of the 20th century, took
over his post as the new head
ofin
the Institute of Geography. E.
Romer was
an out¬
standing person in the academic society of Lvov. Under his supervision, many interest¬
ing studies were done. In his teaching, the greatest novelty were geographical excur¬
sions.
Stanisław Pawłowski.,
the future famous professor of geography, was
Romers
first academic graduate. In 1910 he presented the dissertation
—
Temperatura wód
płynących w Galicji .
Three years later, in 1913,
S.
Pawłowski,
under the supervision of
E. Romer,
obtained postdoctoral lecturing qualifications and became a private
docent.
In 1914 the geopolitical order of Europe was destroyed. The war between powers
which had participated Poland, made Poles to hope that their statehood would be
regained and Ukrainians
—
that their own state would be created. University of Lvov

and thus the Institute of Geography in the period 1914—
1920
operated with numerous
breaks under harsh wartime conditions* Professor
E. Romer
left Lvov in
1914,
head¬
ing for Vienna.
Stanisław Pawłowski,
the young
docent,
was charged with heading
the Institute.
E. Romer
devoted years of war to the Polish state cause. In Vienna he
elaborated Geograficzno-statystyczny atlas
Polski .
This Atlas played a considerable
role in the geopolitical activities of
E. Romer,
whose aim was an independent Polish
state. He also participated as an expert on border problems at the peace conferences in
Paris (1919) and Riga
(192,1).
After this mission, prof.
E. Romer
returned to Lvov and to the University, which
in 1919 took the name of John
Casimir
(Jan Kazimierz)
University (UJK). The first
post-war years were extremely difficult. But the University research work was slowly
reviving. The Institute of Geography operated then under in modest housing and staff
conditions. Due to the reorganization of the structure of UJK in
1924,
the former Fac¬
ulty of Philosophy, in which had functioned the Institute of Geography, was divided
into: the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences,
to which the Institute of Geography was included.
In the same year the Institute was moved to new building. No
9,
Kosciuszko
Street. The organization and structure of studies were similar to the pre-war one. Stu¬
dents were studying at their Masters; there were no strict curriculum
.
Studies were
completed with a doctoral degree. A reform setting a defined curriculum and the mas¬
ter s degree was implemented in
1927.
Ph.D. and Postdoctoral lecturing qualification
(Assoc. Prof.) degrees were the following steps of an academic career. Despite only
few permanent posts
(3—7),
the Institute of Geography gathered numerous collabora¬
tors. Professor E.
Romer was
paying a lot of attention to the independent work of his
students. Themes of investigation and papers were very diverse, often interdisciplinary.
Often geologists, climatologists, and botanists took part in them. Excursions played an
important role in the teaching process.
For the UJK Institute of Geography important was the cooperation with the
school and teachers. The meeting on the cartography at school (in
1925)
and the Se¬
cond and Third National Congresses of Polish Geography Teachers
(1926
and
1928)
were organized, and training courses for geography teachers, too. Lvov geographers
participated in the International Geographical Congresses and meetings. In 1921
prof.
E. Romer
founded the Cartographic Institute, a scientific body outside of the
University structure, being the part of commercial
Książnica-
Atlas . Its task was to de¬
velop the cartographic industry in Poland. Cooperation between those two Institutes
was very close. The person binding those was
E. Romer,
together with his team. Prof.
Romers
closest collaborators were geographers: August Zierhoffer, Julian
Czyżewski,
lózef Wąsowicz, Michał Janiszewski, Franciszek Uhorczak and Teofil Szumański

cartographer. In
1930
prof. E. Romer
retired. The emergence of a successor lasted
nearly
4
years. Since the Ist November,
1933
prof. August Zierhoffer has become a new

head of the UJK Institute of Geography. He was in charge until September
1939.
Prof.
Romer,
as the an honorary professor of the University, kept close contact with the
Institute. He was appointed a Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the
XIV
International Geographical Union Congress in Warsaw, in
1934.
This was a great suc¬
cess of Polish geography and the choice of Warsaw as the place of this meeting was his
achievement.
In the 30s Lvov geographers took part in polar research:
Aleksander
Kosiba
organ¬
ized the first Lvov s expedition to Western Greenland in
1937.
One of the participants
was Alfred
Jahn,
a young assistant.
The Institute of Geography had close cooperation with the Institute of Geophys¬
ics and Meteorology led by prof.
Henryk
Arctowski.
An important role in fostering a scientific interest and in a popularization of geo¬
graphical knowledge was played by the Scientific Circle of UJK Geographers, founded
in
1926,
which carried out an extensive program of lectures given to a wide audience
in Lvov.
Geographical centre of Lvov carried out the considerable publishing activity.
The Institute of Geography edited three journals:
Czasopismo Geograficzne
since
1926,
Polski Przegląd Kartograficzny
since
1923,
Prace Geograficzne
issued by
Eu¬
geniusz
Romer
since 1918. Lvov geographers published also their papers in other jour¬
nals, i.e. in
Kosmos —
journal of the Copernicus Society of Naturalists,
Przyroda
i Technika , Zbliska i
Zdaleka and
Przegląd Krajoznawczy ,
Distinctive features of Lvov geography were studies on cartometry and morpho-
metry. The best studies in this field were those by
Henryk
Teisseyre
—
Powierzchnia
szczytowa Karpat
(1928)
and Julian
Czyżewski
—
Gęstość sieci dolinnej na Podo¬
lu
(1928).
The most important directions of geographical research in Lvov were geo-
morphology and regional geography. Noteworthy are paleomorphological studies by
A. ZierhofFer, concerning the post-diluvial relief of Poland and the genesis of the nor¬
thern edge of Podoiia. J.
Czyżewski
made research in
Pokucie
and in the Dniester
valley. A, Malicki s research on gypsum
karst
in
Pokucie
had the pioneer character.
Tatrzańska epoka lodowa
(1929)
by
Eugeniusz Romer,was
a bold milestone in re¬
search on mountain
glaciations
in Europe, J.
Wąsowicz
and A. ZierhofFer made in¬
vestigations on political geography, that of the population and on the geography of
settlement, too. Important were also studies on history of geography:
Ludwik Zejsz-
ner
jako geograf
by
Aniela Chałubińska
(1928)
and
Plany nauczania geografii wedle
Wielkiej Komisji Edukacyjnej
-
jej drogowskazy dla współczesnych
(1925)
by Maria
Polaczkówna. Eugeniusz
Romers
cartographical school was undoubtedly the great
achievement especially in the field of cartography education.
During the interwar period nearly
150
people completed their studies on geogra¬
phy,
33
doctoral dissertations were completed and
4
postdoctoral degree procedures,
too. The latest ones were made by:
Stanisław
Lencewicz (1921), August ZierhofFer

(1927),
Julian

(1929)
and
Józef Wąsowicz (1931).
Approximately
2500
ar¬
ticles, reports and notes were published. Important elements of Lvov geographers
output were manuals and various teaching aids. Entering the Red Army to Lvov in
September
1939
ended the history of Polish geography at the University of Lvov.
Lvov geographers, who had survived the tragic period of World War II, made great
effort to reconstruct the education in post-war Poland mostly the university one. Un¬

postdoctoral degree procedures were completed
in 1945-1947. The graduates in geography from Lvov largely participated in the re¬
construction of science in Poland. These were:
Aniela Chałubińska,
Julian
Czyżewski,
Jan Ernst, Alfred
Jahn,
Michał Janiszewski, Aleksander
Kosiba,
Adam Malicki,
Bożena Modelska-Strzelecka, Henryk Orkisz, Michał Orlicz, Adam
