Summary
Smil of Lichtenburg
(ca
1215/1220-1269) was one of the most important Bohemian
із 11
century noblemen. He was a member of the noble clan of Ronovci. In their
coat of arms they had ore field, two crossed black branches (called in German
die Ronne )· Smil of Lichtenburg was the founder of one branch of this noble
clan called House of Lichtenburg which used the same coat of arms as the whole
noble clan.
Smil of Lichtenburg was famous as a medieval knight, an elite warrior. He is
mentioned to be fighting for the first time in January
1246
at the battle of Laa an
der
Thaya (or Staatz). Banners of Bohemian king Vaclav (Wenceslas) I. led by
Ulrich
III.
of Sponheim were defeated by Austrian duke Frederick the Quarrelsome. For fur¬
ther career of Smil the uprising of young king
Přemysl
against his own father in
1248/1249 was crucial. What exactly happened during the uprising is unclear, but the
whole noble clan of Ronovci followed old king
Václav
(Wenceslas) I., who won this
quarrel. By the end of this conflict in autumn
1249
Smil was honoured with the title
of the
burgrave
of the Prague castle which was one of the highest offices in the king¬
dom. In that office he didn t stay very long, for the last time he is mentioned as a bur-
grave in 1251. In
1253,
however, under the rule of the new king
Přemysl Otakar
IL
we can already found someone else in that office.
He is mentioned with the nobiliary particle of Lichtenburg for the first time in
the year 1251 and he he was using it from this time on
-
as well as his descendants
who lived until the end of the
іб 11
century. Lichtenburg (Lichnice in Czech) is a big
castle located in the
Čáslav
region (historical county) situated in eastern Bohemia.
Till now it is unclear if this monumental castle was founded by Bohemian king
Václav
(Wenceslas) I. or by Smil of Lichtenburg. Majority of
Smiľs
clients was to be
found in the neighborhood of this castle.
Smil of Lichtenburg took part in one crusade in the winter 1254/1255 led by the
Bohemian king
Přemysl Otakar
II. Its destination was
Sambia
by the Baltic Sea, at
that time mostly pagan territory. The crusade was a success and the Bohemian king
founded the town of
Königsberk
(today s Kaliningrad). In
1257
Smil of Lichtenburg

took part in another campaign of the Bohemian king which led him to Bavaria. This
campaign ended with a defeat at
Mühldorf.
A part of the army of the Bohemian king
was taken in siege inside the town and was finally released for a ransom. He fought
at the battle of
Kressenbrunn (Groißenbrunn in
Austria) in the summer of
1260.
Přemysl Otakar
II. defeated a Hungarian king there and this victory ensured him
the duchy of
Styria
(Steiermark). In
the year
1262
Smil used his knightly seal for the
first time. He is depicted there as a winner of a medieval tournament.
Smil of Lichtenburg had a large landed property mostly situated in the surround¬
ing of today s town of
Havlíčkův Brod.
In that region Benedictine abbey in
Vilémov
had its own landed property as well. In the region of
Havlíčkův Brod
silver ores
were mined and smelted and coining even took place in the town of
Brod
(today s
Havlíčkův Brod). Smil
of Lichtenburg recognized the rights of the Bohemian king to
the ore deposits (called urbura), but he personally wasn t entrepreneur in mining,
smelting or even coining. It s even unclear whether he took part in the process of
colonization
ofthat
region.
In the time of Smil of Lichtenburg several disputes over churches in the
Havlíčkův
Brod
region took place. These disputes concerned the emergence of the parochial
offices in the region. Aforementioned disputes concerned this commandry on one
side as well as the Benedictine abbey in
Vilémov
on the other side. Smil of Lichten¬
burg was not a founder of any monastery even though he became a member of the
family of the founders of Cistercian monastery in
Žďár nad Sázavou.
He tried to
found a men s Cistercian monastery in
Pohled
but he didn t succeed. In his life¬
time women s Cistercian monastery was founded in
Pohled,
though not by Smil
of Lichtenburg.
A second spouse of Smil of Lichtenburg was a very religious woman. She was
a member of the founders family of Cistercian abbey in
Zdar nad Sázavou.
Her
oldest sister was St. Zdislava. The religiosity of this woman (as well as well as her
sisters and their mother called
Sibyla)
is very interesting. It is consistent with the
common change of behavioral patterns among women of noble birth during the
13th century in central European region. Smil of Lichtenburg died in
1269
and was
buried in the
Žd ár
monastery. He left behind four sons and at least one daughter.
