Slovenia was significantly marked not only by the events of WW2 but also by the blood-
shedding revenge act which followed in the months after the war had ended. The infor¬
mation available so far reveals that between May
1945
and January
1946 14,000
Slovenians were killed in their own homeland, among them over
1,100
civilians, and
several ten thousand members of other Yugoslav nations who happened to be on Slovenian
territory at that particular point in time.
The revenge act of the winners and the new dictators over the defeated
-
and later over
the class and political, actual and imaginary opponents
-
was especially cruel, as the liq¬
uidations were executed without any trials, and the victims were erased from the public
memory. Mass tombs, solitary graves and the buried victims simply did not exist . By the
orders of the political authorities the graves were levelled with the ground, hidden, de¬
stroyed. The murdered people were labelled as traitors who got what they deserved.
A fortnight after the last fights around the towns of
Celje
and
Lasko,
at the end of May
and in the first days of June
1945,
In the abandoned gallery of the Huda jama coal mine
a mass massacre took place.
Among the six hundred locations of mass graves the Barbara gallery in the Huda jama
coal mine was between the first ones to be kept a record of, in the year
2000.
There were
no written records on the killings. However, people could tell that there were two galleries
and that the number of victims was well over two thousand
-
Slovenians and Croatians,
soldiers and civilians. According to the researchers the estimated number of victims was
too high, but the access to the galleries was not possible and detailed research could not
be performed. Three hundred metres away from the entrance into the gallery there was
the first brick barrier.
After the first probings of the recorded caves, pits, trenches and
karst
precipices in
2006,
the situation was ripe for the research of the gallery in the Huda jama coal mine.
On July
24, 2008,
the coal mine rescue workers broke through the barrier and stumbled
upon a gallery filled up with tailings. The work was interrupted, but after a few weeks
the workers began to transport the material to the side galleries by means of hand
digging and wheel barrows. Each day a progress of two and a half metres was made.
Four hundred cubic metres of tailings were transported. The workers stumbled upon
eleven different barriers in the course of their digging. The largest, made of reinforced
concrete, was
1.2
m
thick.
On March
3, 2009,
after almost eight months of removing the barriers, the researchers
found a seemingly endless white mass of unknown material In the gallery. They stood in
front of a huge pile of not yet disintegrated bodies. They did not stumble upon a pile of
dry bones which one would expect to find after sixty-five years. They found bodies with
visible hair, nails, skin, ears. They were glued to each other. Due to the lack of air, the
bodies did not disintegrate. Mortal remains of

people were taken out by forensics. All
of them were male, aged between sixteen and sixty. Most of them died of gunshot
wounds, predominantly in the head, and some died of hard blows in the head by heavy
objects.
Soon the access to the first
mineshaft
was enabled. There was no doubt for the researchers
that there would be mortal remains of the victims in the shaft as well. There was hair still
seen on the walls, stuck there after the bodies pressed against each other while disinte¬
grating. The shaft is forty-five metres deep and the first victims were found eight metres
from the opening. The court decided that it should be researched five metres into the
depth to determine the number of victims. The miners brought out mortal remains of

victims, both male and female, from the depth between eight and
13.5
metres. Considering
the depth of the shaft and the amount of the victims discovered, it is assumed that in the
shaft at the depth of thirty-two metres
,
the part which has remained untouched, there
are still mortal remains of more than
2,300
people.
On the basis of the few found objects it is possible to assume that the victims belonged
to the Slovenian anti-Communist formation
Domobranci
and to the Croatian military for¬
mation NDH. There were also some civilian victims among them. A lot of sanitary material
was found, bandages, medicine containers and orthopedic devices, which leads one to
assume that there were wounded people among the victims as well.
The criminal police found a few subjects of Slovenian nationality who collaborated on or
witnessed the killings in the gallery. They were members of the third brigade of the
Slovenian division of KNOJ. They testified that prisoners had been brought to Huda jama
by lorries from the military camp in Teharje near
Celje.
The lorries stopped a few hundred
metres away from the coal mine and the victims were ordered to enter the coal mine
gallery. Before they were killed they had been told to take off their clothes. They had to
kneel down in front of the
mineshaft,
their liquidators aimed at the back of their necks
and turned them over into the shaft after the shot. Their clothes and personal documents
were taken away, back to the military camp, where they were destroyed. Once the shaft
was full, the liquidators killed the last groups of prisoners in the gallery. One of the
witnesses reported that one soldier drove five or six prisoners to the gallery. The gallery
was already full of dead bodies, which were put on top of one another and next to each
other like firewood. Three prisoners waiting to be executed had to lie on top of the pile
face down and the soldier shot them.
The research of Huda jama was finished in
2010.
The government decided that the
victims left in the shaft would not be taken out. They will remain underground, at the
depth between
13.5
and
48
metres. The exact number of victims will never be established.
The
796
victims who had already been examined by the forensics will remain in the coal
mine as well, The authorities have decided not to arrange a graveyard close to the
entrance into the coal mine. An ossuary in the mine for the
796
victims has been
arranged instead. The victims have thus been closed in the mine and their family
members, some of whom can only assume that their loved ones disappeared in the
Barbara gallery, have been denied the right of the last farewell.
The victims of Huda jama will thus once again become victims, this time those of a dem¬
ocratic state which proclaims respectful treatment of the victims of WW2 but does not ex¬
ercise it itself.
The unexplored Huda jama will continue to open new questions, enable speculations
and manipulations with the victims, and it will remain fierce
(=
Huda ). In a year, two,
or three, the wooden construction, built to enable the access to the mortal remains of the
victims, will collapse, and the future generations will have an even more difficult task to
execute the acts of a civilized society.
