It is a truism that history is about representation : but
then opinions will diverge
—
as they should
—
on what is
meant by representation . Most of the chapters in this
volume were first presented in November
2008
at an
international conference co-organised by the Society for the
Study of Labour History and the University of Rouen. The
authors
—
of all generations
—
come from Britain, France,
Germany and the United States, and cover the field from
the Middle Ages to the most recent developments.
The friendly confrontation of points of view and cross-
fertilisation which result from such undertakings can only
add to our perception of the diversity of that elusive notion
in history, representation
—
of working people in Britain
and France in this particular instance. Beyond the
differences in periods, places and situations, the reader will
not fail to see the bridges which recurrently link the
various elements in the collection.
Antoine
Capet, FRHistS, is Professor of British Studies at the
University of Rouen. After submitting his
Doctorat d État on
the British governing classes and social reform,
1931-1951
(published
1991),
he continued to concentrate his research
on Britain in and before the Second World War, notably on
the Depression and the march to war. He was General
Editor of the Revue
française de civilisation britannique
from
2003
to
2006.
He has been Editor of the Britain since
1914
section of the Royal Historical Society Bibliography since
2001
and he sits on the International Board of Twentieth
Century British History.
