The population of Austrian Silesia in the late Enlightenment period. Se¬
lective series.
Summary
Selective series make data characterizing the population of Austrian
Silesia in the late 18th century available to public. It is a tabular numeric data
with text commentary contained in the yet unpublished manuscript, perhaps
the description of the country. It introduces the social structure of the popula¬
tion (nobles, officials and intelligence, monastic and secular clergy, urban and
rural populations) with regard to their professional focus (means of livelihood).
Specifically it presents the portion of population data from of the third part of
the manuscript, with the title About its (ie provincial) different classes of peo¬
ple, the serfs, the Jews and the poor, according to their status on the basis of
livelihood contributions to public spending

A fraction of the manuscript, from which only besides the third also the
fourth section is available for now, focused on the description of the provincial
authorities, towns, tax and government benefits, banking system and mining
(„Von denen Landes-Ältesten Amtern, von denen königlich-herzoglichen und
anderen Staedten, von dem Contributionali in
ordinario,
von dem
Camerali,
von den
Banco gefaellen,
und von den
Bergwercken ), is of the official charac¬
ter and was most likely created around
1780.
Textual analysis and comparison
with other sources suggest that the original source was factually created after
1778,
even during the existence of (Austrian) Silesia as a separate land unit
with its own administration represented by the royal authority in
Opava
(which
means before
1782),
but already at the same time with respect to the new
methodology of population conscriptions introduced in response to the reforms
of Joseph II. in
1780.
Most likely it is a description of Silesia with regard to
the essential components of public life (administration, economy and finance,
population), perhaps related to the planned administrative reform of the Bohe¬
mian Crown at the provincial level.
