The pre-war buildings of the
Norbiin,
Buch
Brothers and T. Werner plant situated at
51/53
Żelazna
Street, known locally by Warsaw residents
as the
Norbiin
Factory, cover approximately two
hectares near the heart of Warsaw. This is one of
the most precious post-industrial architectural
gems in the Polish capital.
In the mid-nineteenth century a small factory
was set up here producing a variety of metal
products.
Gustav Henniger
working in partnership
with Edward Luckfield was its owner. The factory
was operated by the
Buch
Brothers company
and in
1882
it was purchased by the partnership
company of
Ludwik
Norbiin
and
Teodor
Werner. It
then gradually expanded into one of the biggest
companies in the metal business on Polish soil.
The Stock Society Factory
Norbiin,
Buch
Brothers and T. Werner originally produced
elegant tableware products, which adorned the
tables of many Polish and Russian townsfolk.
These tableware items were even available on
the Persian market. Later, semi-finished products
made from non-ferrous metals, such as, wires,
cables, rods and mortar and rifle cartridge cases,
became the dominant part of production. The
factory was partially destroyed during the Second
World War but after the war it was rebuilt and then
nationalized. The state-owned Metals Rolling Mill
Warszawa ,
which was established on the factory
premises, did not invest in the plant, and operated
partly using pre-war machines. In the early
1980s,
the Warsaw authorities decided to place the
Museum of Industry here, and the
Norbiin
Factory
became an actual industrial museum. At that time
some of the buildings, along with the machines
located in them, were recorded in the Register of
Historical Monuments.
The oldest buildings of the
Norbiin
Factory from
the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth century
exist until this day. At that time the suburban
residence of
Franciszek
Ryx, the son of one of
the most influential people in the court of King
Stanislaw
August Poniatowski, was located here.
This area has become typically industrial since
the mid-nineteenth century. The first part of this
book describes the fate of this factory located at
Żelazna
Street. The story is illustrated with rich
iconographie
material, as well as facts about the
relations of people associated with the
Norbiin
Factory.
The second part is devoted to the products
produced in the
Norbiin
Factory. The
iconographie
material illustrates the craftsmanship and quality
of the products produced in the
Norbiin,
Buch
Brothers and T. Werner company (which, next
to Joseph s
Fraget
company, was one of the two
pillars of the Warsaw plating industry). It is also a
testimony to the changing fashions and styles in
applied art since the late nineteenth century to
the 30s of the twentieth century.
The third part highlights the
Norbiin
Factory
as one of the most important and interesting
industrial sites on the map of Warsaw, using
many rich photographs to do so. The preserved
functional-spatial layout of the former factory
and the unique equipment and machinery are the
unique elements of this site.
This book is the first publication that presents
the
Norbiin
Factory from a different perspective.
It was written on the initiative of the Association
of Our
Norbiin
with the participation of the Open
Museum of Former Factory Foundation, along
with the help and kindness of many individuals
and institutions. We invite you to read it.
