A characteristic belief of the present day is that the past is of no
importance and does not impact man in the twenty-first century.
The existence of this conviction has been demonstrated in many re¬
searches which clearly evince that the majority of Poles do not know
their national history and, what is more, do not attempt to learn
about it. Nevertheless, it seems that historical knowledge plays
a significant part in the development of civil society especially that
a society that, forgetful of its own past and therefore unequipped
with criteria acquired through experience, is unable to programme
a harmonious coexistence and a common commitment in accom¬
plishing future objectives. Such a society is particularly vulnerable
to ideological manipulation. l One could venture an opinion that
historical memory has a key role in the growth of such a society that
is not only aware of its identity, but also capable of coping with the
difficult aspects of its history. Moreover, an individual who lives
in a period of rapid changes needs some permanent points of ref¬
erence which allow to define one s identity since every nation has
its unique historical memory. Historical memory has an extremely
broad range of meanings and is an elusive concept. Therefore the in¬
terpretation of historical facts acquires a special significance because
these facts often become abused, serving particular interests of soci¬
eties, nations or smaller groups, for instance politically-biased. And
in politics, according to

the importance of memory in¬
creases. Yet for many people the crucial issue is not the shaping
of common memory but rather the defence of their idiosyncratic,

in that the modern world, including Poland, witnesses a competi¬
tive game between the government and the opposition to take over
social memory. The game is called historical policies. Contrary
to a common fallacy, it is not merely a trite slogan
-
these policies
prove to exert real impact on the awareness of the young generation
and their understanding and interpretation of the national history.
The texts that are included in this monograph strive to analyse
the above defined problem, both its theoretical and practical aspects.
They can be divided into three categories. The first one concentrates
on the educational contexts of memory and historical policies; it
shows important links between understanding historical memory
with its role and functions and the interpretation of tasks of historical
policies, such as the suggested engagement of national institutions in
the formation and popularization of our visions of the past or the ac¬
tive part of educational bodies in the upbringing of the young.
The second category of discussed topics pertains to those his¬
torical facts that have influenced the awareness of individuals and
social groups. These topics embrace theoretical and methodological
issues in historical sciences as well as the place and role of a hero in
modelling patriotic and pro-social attitudes.
The third area of analysis concerns mutual dependencies between
politics and the common memory of a society. The methods of com¬
memorating past events frequently have to reconcile individual mem¬
ory and group memory, and such a reconciliation entails a strong in¬
volvement of political elites. On the one hand it was surmised that
the nation was supposed to benefit from the measures taken by the
government, but on the other hand these measures were suspected
to raise the risk of indoctrination and using the past instrumentally,
so as to attain political goals. Turbulent discussions about the role of
historical memory manifest how vitally it supports the national and
cultural identity; also, in a high degree, they determine the methods
and scope of the cultural self-presentation of various circles.
The authors reflected on a multitude of problems that, directly
or indirectly, bear upon historical memory. The contributed articles
imply that relations between memory, history and politics can be
viewed from several vantage points. It is our hope that the contents
of these texts will inspire the readers to continue further, equally
profound scientific research and queries.
