THE MAGIC OF THE GIFT
SUMMARY
According to Marcel Mauss, a most knowledgeable theorist to whom
contemporary ethnology owes peerless scientific contributions, the gift is a
complex phenomenon which blends together moral, juridical, religious,
economic, political and family aspects. His theories are a starting point in
any lecture on the impact the gift and the exchange of gifts have on the life
of various social groups. Extensive scientific studies, mostly achieved by
the French ethnology, which carried on Marcel Mauss research, render
conspicuous the profound and diverse implications of the gift and the
oblatory practices in human existence, as an essential means of com¬
munication. Experts studies are focused mainly upon its economic and, of
course, social value, therefore the gift seen as an original form of circulation
and redistribution of goods, as well as a vehicle of communication in
a non
verbal language.
However, the gift reveals many a valency when it is perceived from the
angle of its cultural value, of the significance and the functions it cumulates
as a creation and, at the same time, as an element generating cultural norms
and patterns. In this respect, the book aims to separate from the complex
manifestations of the gift and the oblational practices that are characteristic
to the Romanian popular culture only the elements that define the gift as a
cultural value and can, therefore, be included in the system of traditional
values, the specific and perennial ones which imprint identifying features
to the Romanian people and ro its culture.
Being the first work on the subject in the Romanian specialized
literature, from a methodolog

Problems of particular interest to us are The Positive Magic of the Gift, as
well as The Negative Magic which it releases, aspects identified in the old
beliefs, found especially in the folk tales.
Starting with the next chapter, we describe methodically the forms that
gifts, as elements of a clearly structured cultural system, take in traditional
life. First, we analyze The Total Gift. Hospitality. Making use of Marcel
Mauss language (who describes the potlatch phenomenon as total obla¬
tion), we try to define the rich semantic significance of hospitality as it
appears in the Romanian traditional thinking and practice.
Gift forms (everyday or holiday ones) that are discussed in chapters as
Word as a Gift and Gift in Work Form, give us the opportunity to
reevaluate
the words and formulae used in daily life, in ceremonial or ritualistic
segments, or in the reinterpretation of sequences from well-known tradi¬
tional customs in the light of the theory of the gift.
The study of the oblational phenomenon as a cultural system can be
best achieved by analysing the Holiday Gift. In this context, The Exchange of
Gifts with the Fellow Human Beings and Offerings to God are the titles of the
chapters which aim to reveal the ritualistic role of the gifts or of the joint
feasts organized during the holidays.
By transforming the gift into a conceptual instrument, we succeed in
reinterpreting traditional customs and sequences in which the offering is a
basic structural element (carol singing, rain making).
In the spiritual sphere of the relation between human being

God,
we include the ritualistic practice

sacrifice, considered as the oldest form
of exchanging gifts with God. In the chapter Sacrificial Symbolism in the
Traditional Customs we focus our attention on the symbols which the
sacrificial act accumulates and on the symbolic images it acquires in the
folk customs.
A chapter to which we wanted to give scientific weight through an
argumentation based on ample documentation, deals with the gift form
which has the richest significance in the Romanian traditional culture and
which can be considered as an identity mark of the Romanian people

alms. Even the title. The Institutionalized Gift. The Alms aims to reveal the
special status of rliis complex oblational practice which represents the
essential structure of the gift as a cultural institution.
In the gift-related semantic field we locate circulation forms of goods
char have significances which symbolically
prolongue,
in time, the exis¬
tence of the donor: the dosrn and the inheiitance. The chapter Generation

Links illustrates the vertical dynamics of the gift in forms in which, through
its material nature and, indeed, through spiritual connotations, it achieves a
link between generations.
In the fourth section THE GIFT IN THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD,
we try to detect certain changes that occur in the evolution of the gift in the
Romanian contemporary village society. Meanwhile, we attempt to learn to
what extent the old conceptions and principles remain valid for preserving
the oblational practices in the context of the obvious simplification and loss
of ritualistic content of the ceremonies as a whole.
The last section of the book, TERMINOLOGY OF THE GIFT is devot¬
ed to analysing the specific vocabulary of the traditional, as well as contem¬
porary, oblational act (taking into account that nowadays the terminology is
preserved, although certain sequences of the ceremonial scenario are lost).
An ethymological and semantic study of the specific terms reveals the
coherence of the oblational system, its structural and functional logic, its
particular importance in the traditional life patterns and, especially, its
cultural value, its implication in the entire popular spirituality.
The work is made complete by a CORPUS OF DOCUMENTS which
support the numerous assertions made in the text. The corpus is made of a
selection of texts from earlier publications and documents collected by the
author in the surveys made for the Ethnographic Atlas of Romania (manu¬
script) or in individual inquiries on a special subject. It also includes the
texts of certain recordings (phonograph or tape recorder) from the Folklore
Archives of C.
