Summary
The main work by
Jan Długosz - Roczniki
[Annals]
-
from the moment of its
origin has been a subject of various research attempts by historians and the facts and
opinions contained there have been constantly verified. In most cases, the work was
able to defend its credibility and for many centuries has been a basic diary to provide
informaton
on the history of medieval Poland. Historians have been pointing out
for long time to the sources of information contained in the Annals, especially that
concerning older times, which the diarist had not been able to know personally or
from the participants' stories.
Długosz
was often in possession of information much
more precise than that which can be met in contemporary available diaries or annals.
This means that, in addition to being acquainted with the above, he must have also
used some richer and more voluminous sources. There are, however, such fragments
in
Długoszs
work, whose sources are not known to us or even we cannot be certain if
they had existed at all. This concerns especially information regarding history of the
region of Mazovia.
The scope of making use by the diarist of contemporary unknown sources raises
many controversies. A. Semkowicz in his critical analysis of Dugosz
s
work, pointed
out to the existence of some lost source containing Mazovia-related information. In
some cases, he described the source as
Płock
Annals, sometimes called it Mazovian
Annals, whereas in other places referred to it as an unknown Mazovian source. The
next generations of historians have continued this idea. As a result of numerous de¬
tailed findings, the idea of lost
Płock
diaries dated from the 12th and 13th century has
been universally accepted. K. Pacuski, referring to the old opinions by A. Bielowski,
H. Zeissberg and B.
Kürbis,
presented his more precise opinion on the existence of
annals conducted in
Płock.
According to him, the fragments of Mazovian notes have
been preserved in the form of Spominiki
płockie [Płock
Memories] and Spominki

sochaczewskie [Sochaczew
Memories]. Much more information of Mazovian origin
was preserved in Jan Dhigosz's Annals, as he probably made use of more complete
version of the annals as well as notes by the Dominicans from
Płock. W. Drelicharz,
on the other hand, pointed out that
Długosz
might have taken the information only
from some common source that is currently known such as Spominki i.e. he made use
of Spominki

The aim of the present work results from the above presented state of research. It
is to support or put into question almost universal opinion held by historians that
Długosz
made use in his Annals of unpreserved Mazovian sources, especially the lost
annals. In order to answer the question, one must settle which information concern¬
ing the Mazovia region comes from lost sources. In any case, the possibility of "mak¬
ing up
"
of such information by the diarist or arriving at it by means of deductive
thinking or sheer guessing is also considered. The further stage consists in partial
reconstruction of the content of lost annals, that seem to be the most voluminous
of
Długoszs
Mazovian sources. Other lost Mazovian sources also received detailed
consideration.
The analysis of the fragments of the Annals by
Długosz,
conducted from the point
of view of making use of Mazovian sources, showed that he had used many lost writ¬
ing monuments at many stages of his work. It seems almost certain that had been in
the possession of unpreserved catalogue of
Płock
bishops in the form of a list of the
bishops' names. Some of them may have been accompanied by the date of their death
or period of holding office. Moreover, the diarist also made use of some historical
notes collected from Mazovian codes or even coming from other districts containing
information on Mazovias history. He also had some source on
Krystyna,
the
voivode
of Mazovia (Spominki
o Gozdawach
[Memories on Gozdaws]). In the light of the
research, there is no doubt that he had also access to lost annals containing at least

short notes with year dates of the following years:
1267, 1273, 1279, 1281, 1283,1285,
1286,1288, 1318,1325, 1331, 1340,1370.
It was possible to reconstruct the lost notes
as
Długosz
received the annals after the first editing of the autograph had been made
by a writer described as hand B, correcting and completing it from the lost annals by
entering those notes personally in a short time. It may be assumed that it took him
a few days, weeks or months at the longest to scan and correct the whole manuscript
as well as to write down notes with the use of the same or similar ink. There was not
much space in the autograph between chapters of the existing text, which resulted in
the fact that the writer limited himself to rewriting (maybe with some minor changes)
of the notes from received annals. Moreover, as the subject matter differred consider¬
ably from that contained under the headings of certains years, they were not suitable
to be an extended completion of the basic text. By rewriting them, the diarist tried to
make them look similar to already existing entries in the autograph i.e. he differenti¬
ated first words with block letters, started the text (first letter) before marginal line etc.
All added notes are short, mostly of one sentence, which allows us to speculate that
the whole annals were similar in form.

Three Mazovian notes were added with the same ink on a piece of paper different
than the basic paper of the first editing version. They allow us to evaluate approxi¬
mately their terminus postquem of receiving the annals. These are notes occurring
under the headings of years
1318, 1331
on a piece of paper with
Vile
watermark as
well as the note under the year
1325
on a piece of paper marked Vllb (the paper
marking and writers' hands as introduced by W. Semkowicz-Zarembina). The piece
of paper with the last mark is dated for years
1465 - 1467.
The main text was rewrit¬
ten by
В
writer. Especially, the dating found on the last piece of paper shows that the
time of entering of the annals obtained by the diarist was about the year
1470.
The text
layout on some pages of the autograph proves that some information from the
Płock
annals was added after getting acquainted with the text of the Annals of Pomeranian
and Teutonic sources i.e. around
1467.
Determining of paper date as well as date de¬
termination of
XIX
(XX) of the autograph content allow us to evaluate more precisely
ad quern period of obtaining by the diarist of the
Płock
annals. Their fragments were
included into the main body of the text rewritten by a writer called A2 hand in the
period around
1469
(end of the year)
- 1470.
The second stage of reconstruction allows to use information on lost annals as
obtained in the result of the above procedure at the first stage. The diarist behaved
differently when the note corresponded to the chapter subject matter already placed
in the autograph under the same year. In such a case, he corrected the text by adding
newly found information such as names, some event's details or places. The colour
of the ink shows the origin of the information
-
these are Mazovian subjects and
detailed information not available in preserved sources that could not be deducted
by the diarist from sources existing at that time and which he had no reason to make
up to make the text stylistically or narrative better. In such case, the reconstruction of
the whole note of the year is not possible although we may guess what it contained. In
some cases,
Długosz
confined himself to writing the note's beginning and then passed
the duty of its finishing to his collaborator. It seems that sometimes it was even the
collaborator who, maybe after discussing it with the diarist, added some notes on the
basis of possessed materials. The diarist often made some corrections and comple¬
tions afterwards. Chronological order of entering those additions may also be helpful
in determining source of the notes. The time of entering them
-
as far as it can be
determined
-
falls on the same period when
Długosz
added to the autograph whole
entries of the annals as settled in th first stage of the research.
Correcting and completing the manuscipt took many years
-
piled up corrections
and newly obtained sources resulted in the need to rewrite whole pages or sets of
information or add new pages.
Długosz
used it as an opportunity to edit the already
entered text. The differentiation of notes of the lost annals in those parts is much
more difficult, so the conclusions are more hypothetical in nature. The existence of
the notes is testified by Mazovian subject matter (information not found in other
preserved sources) as well as their unprecise embedding into the original text or un¬
justifiable repetitions.

The
second
stage of the research work realized in chapter two and three brought
information on the notes contained in the lost annals, whose content can only be esti¬
mated. This is information placed by
Długosz
under the year headings of
1205, 1217,
1223, 1227, 1255, 1258, 1313, 1333, 1344, 1365, 1367, 1371.
The major part of the
annals' entries are made up of notes and completions in the Annals under the years of
1222, 1231, 1234, 1243,1295, 1318
(second note),
1341, 1345, 1355, 1364.
The result of all these searches is a reconstruction of the content of the lost annals
placed in the Annex. It is limited to passing Dhigosz's text containing annals but with¬
out marked additions or the diarists abbreviations. The content of the old annals that
were changed by the diarist were only summarized. As a result, we can discover that
the lost annals contained

entries. If we take into account that notes placed under
the year headings of
1283
and
1344
contain respectively two and three notes of differ¬
ent subject matter, that totals
38
of them.
In the light of the known source subject matter, there is no doubt that the lost year
annals were written at that time in
Płock
as all his notes date from 13th
-
14th century.
Most arguments speak in favour of their origin in cathedral environment, although
other possibilities of being made in Benedictine cloister cannot be excluded; the
Płock
Benedictines do not seem, however, to be a convincing place. As a result of their ori¬
gin, one may sugest calling them the
Płock
Annals as this name does not indicate any
specific institution.
In so far literature (B.
Kürbis,
К.
Pacuski) the beginning of keeping year diaries in
Płock
date to the times of bishop Alexander (12th c.) as the oldest preserved notes (in
Spominiki
płockie
and Spominki sochaczwskie) come from the period of his term of
office. They are considered to form a part of some bigger writing monument that is
currently missing. One should note that when
Długosz
made use of those sources,
both presently known Spominki as well as
Płock
annals (that he came to know later)
must have already been separate sources. It is also worth noting that
Długosz
used the
original Spominki only to a limited extent i.e. he did not copy two 12th
с
notes, omit¬
ting some important information connected with Church. On the other hand, if the
used
Płock
annals had contained partially the same notes as Spominki, he must have
included some of them in the second editing version. Therefore, one may claim that
the original Spominki were not only a reconstructed part of the
Płock
annals, but also
did not belong to some bigger (lost) Mazovian diary.
In the light of the research work,
Płock
as a diary writing centre is not much dif¬
ferent from other bishop capitals of medieval Poland, except for Cracow. The circum¬
stances of diary writing development both as regards educated people and the needs
of readers did not differentiate
Płock
from other towns that were seats of bishops and
princes.
Płock
annals, containing to a large extent political, military and family infor¬
mation on local princes were in character a court diary.
We do not know the form in which
Długosz
received
Płock
annals. His biography
does not mention any stay in
Płock
and also in the Annals he does not reveal any
knowledge of the town. This may mean that he did not study systematically the con-

tent of those cathedral archives even when making a Catalogue of bishops because
otherwise he would not have made such chronological mistakes in that work. As a re¬
sult, one should assume that he obtained extracts with the help of some clergyman.
These were fragments (a whole?) of annals and some notes from local codes. He may
have obtained separately a catalogue of bishops with their names only.
The research results presented in the present work include also such findings as
which of Dtugosz's information concerning matters of the Mazovia region are his
guesses or was made up by him. He, himself wrote that he quotes certain things that
are close to the truth and not everything that was presented in the Annals is sure. It
stemmed from his belief that one should describe a complete history i.e. containing all
information that he considered important. When he did not find such information in
the available sources, he felt coerced to take information "from one's own suggestion
or that of other [people]", as he himself described it. As a result, his work contains
many exaggerations. Similar effects were achieved by his belief that one should pre¬
sent interesting stories, which he understood as applying various narrative methods.
This led to introducing into texts of probable dates of various events, often given in
accordance with different systems of day marking. These features of his historical
literary output give an idea of his perception of the conception of historical writing.
