Sreten
Vukosavljević
was born on
6
March
1881,
in Prepolje, where
he completed the elementary education. As very talented pupil, hewas
awarded a scholarship from the Kingdom of Serbia. He graduated in
1901
at the Teacher-training College in Aleksinac.
He started his career in the villages of
Timočka Krajna,
but after the
death of his father he returned to his homeland and became a director of
an elementary school in Nova
Varoš,
and later, in Prepolje, where he
spent four years.
During his career in education he contributed a lot to the
improvement of village s schools operating in the district of
Stara
Raška.
Particularly, he engaged in the activities aimed at fostering regular
school attendance among countryside children.
Sreten
Vukosavljević
also was involved in the process of the
people s enlightenment. He taught illiterate adults how to read and write
.He founded in Nova
Varoš
the schools for adults and servants and the
rifle club for which he obtained weapons. He was meritorious for the
establishment of the community library and the
Sveti Sava
society in
the same city.
He became politically active when he returned to his homeland in
order to help the Serbian people to gain national independence from the
Turkish (Ottoman)
Imperia
and improve its social and economic
position. He intensified his activities aimed at political organization of
the Serbs in the Ottoman
Imperia
after the victory of the Young Turks.
As a deputy from Prijepolje he was the member of the First National
Assemble of the Ottoman s Serbs which was held in Skopje in February
1909.
Vukosavljević
moved to Montenegro in September
1909.
There he
wrote a lot newspaper articles about social position of the Serbs in
StaraRaška
and schools in Montenegro.

He returned from Montenegro to Skopje in September
1911,
where
he was appointed as a director of an elementary school. But, as from
December
ofthat
year he was completely devoted to national-liberations
activities, due to the demands of the government of the Kingdom of
Serbia. Firstly, he became the member of the organization The Unity or
Death, and then its leader in
Sandžak.
He also formed a very strong
guerrilla unit, i.e. komitas in surgent unit. Before the outbreak of the
First World War,
Vukosavljević,
with his komitas, crossed the river
Lim
chasing after the Turkish insurgents in
Kamena
Gora. He
was standing
out for his bravery and military commitment during the liberation of
Priboj.
But he was not only one of the distinguished liberators of
Stara
Raška
from the Turkish slavery. He also took part in the combats at
Thessaloniki s front during World War I.
After the end of the First World War and the foundation of the
Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians/Yugoslavia, Sreten
Vuko¬
savljević
became the member of the Democratic Party. As the
distinguished party member, he was appointed to be the main commis¬
sioner in the Ministry for land reform in the newly liberated regions of
Serbia and Montenegro. He was elected as the Member of Parliament
at the elections in
1920
and
1923.
But after joining the Svetozar
Pribičević s
Independent Democratic Party in
1924,
due to the Muslims
hate of
Pribičević,
he lost the trust of the Muslims electoral body and
failed to be re-elected at the Parliament elections of

February
1925.
Soon after that he retired from the political life at only
44
years of age.
After the retirement,
Vukosavljević
started to explore the rural
relations in Yugoslavia. He published lot of sociological articles and
studies in daily newspaper and journals. He also wrote about land reform
and colonization, international relations, and about cultural, economic
and political circumstances in Yugoslavia.
In spite lacking academic education, thanks to his published work,
he was appointed as a professor at the Faculty of Law in Belgrade. He
received positive references from the eminent professors Slobodan
Jovanović, Đorđe Tasić
and Mihailo
Konstantino
vić.
The Second World War broke his academic career, but revived his
political activities.
Vukosavljević
joined the communist national-
liberation movement in September
1943.
He became a prominent

member of the Yugoslav antifascist organization and carried out a lot of
political tasks during one
decennium.
He was the president of the
national liberation council for the
Mileševo
district, the president of the
Executive Committee of Anti-fascist Council (ZAVNO) for
Sandžak,
the Minister in the
Šubašić s
Government in London as the repre¬
sentative of the National Committee of Liberation of Yugoslavia, the
Minister in the first Tito s Government, the member of the Parliament
of the Republic of Serbia and the Federal Parliament, the member of
the Serbian and the Federal Presidium, the member of the Executive
Committee of the Republic of Serbia, as well as a member of executive
bodies formed at the republic s and the federal levelswithin a mass
organizationoriginally called the People s Front, which later developed
into the Socialist Alliance of Working People.
Due to his great academic knowledge and longstanding political
experience, he did not uncritically accept all policies of the Yugoslav
communist leadership. Firstly, he criticized the communist policy of the
expropriation of agrarian productswhich he depicted as the insolent
pillage of countryside . Secondly, he did not agree with the policy of
the division of
Sandžak
between Serbia and Montenegro. But, the most
importantly, he, as the Minister for colonisation, refused to endorse the
policy of banning the Serbs colonists from returning to Kosovo and
Metohija
and to Macedonia.
Sreten
Vukosavljević
lost his ministerial position when the Ministry
for agrarian reform and colonisation was replaced by the Commission
for agrarian reform and colonisation. At that
pointVukosavljević
realized
that he could not influence the state agrarian policy because he was not
a member of the Yugoslav Communist Party. He withdrew from the
political life and resumed his research work.
Although
Vukosavljević
renewed his academic career soon after the
end of the Second World War, heretired from it on
13
March
1951
as
the Head ofthe Department for history of the state and law of the Law
Faculty in Belgrade.
From
1
June
1947
to
22
December
1953
he served as the director of
the Institute for research of rural area at the Serbian Academy of Science.
In this last period of his life,
Vukosavljević
finished and published his
most important studies:

seljačkog društva
(History of Rural Society): Oganizovanje
seljačke zemljišne svojine
(The Organisation of Rural Land Property)

Sociologija selajčkih radova
(Sociology of Rural Labour).
Despite the fact that he did not finish his History of Rural Society,
Vukosavljević
left an impressive work both in terms of scope and
content, a work that serves as thewide-based synthesis of research about
the Yugoslav rural area during the 18th and 19th centuries. He provided a
detailed description of the people s way of life at the countryside and
presented the evolution of the rural society in Serbia and Yugoslavia.
Thus, Sreten
Vukosavljević
developed the sociology of rural area in
Serbia and Yugoslavia and founded it as the research discipline.
